Highland Games are traditional

celebrations of Scottish sports and

culture. People celebrate them in

towns all over Scotland, but the

biggest are the Cowal Games, in

Dunoon on the west coast. They

take place for three days at the

end of August, and about 20,000

people attend every year.

Highland Games always have

athletics events, like running and

jumping. There are traditional

sports too, like the caber toss

and the tug of war. In the caber

toss, the competitors throw a

long wooden pole called a caber.

In the tug of war, two teams pull

on opposite ends of a rope to see

who’s stronger.

Music is an important part

of Highland Games. Bands play

traditional instruments, like

bagpipes and drums. You can also

see Scottish dancers doing folk

dances, like the Sword Dance or the

Highland Fling.

At Highland Games, many people

dress in traditional clothes. The

most famous example is the kilt.

You can also try some Scottish

food, like haggis. It’s a dish made

from a sheep’s stomach. Don’t worry!

It tastes much better than it sounds!
