Project Theme
Spring Brake System for trailers
Problem
1) During coupling, the trailer may roll backwards if the trailer’s brakes are faulty.
2) During container loading/unloading, the trailer may move forward when the forklift enters the container which is mounted on a trailer.
Problem
Illustration : Forklift topples from the loading bay.
Problem
A normal service brake
Problem – the trailer with faulty service brakes rolled
backwards as the prime mover is trying to couple it.
Causes
1) Trailers installed with only service brakes.
2) When parked, the compressed air in the service brakes keeps the brake engaged.
3) If the air in the service brakes leaks, the brake becomes disengaged.
Solution
Spring brakes installed in addition to the normal service brakes .

The team was formed in 2001. The objective for this formation is to look into potential workplace safety and health hazards and recommend control measures.
Abstract
When the trailer’s service brakes fail, the trailer may roll forward or backwards.
This inadvertent movement can cause damage to properties or injury to on-foot personnel.
The Spring Brakes installed onto our trailers can helped to prevent such inadvertent movement.
Abstract
WSH Council’s Alert.
Project Details
1) PTC Logistics is a third party logistics service provider.
2) Most of our customers are from the Oil and Gas industry.
3) We perform huge volume of transportation of containers and ISO tanks using trailers.
4) Hence, the consequence of a “runaway” trailer can be very serious, especially if it happens in our customers’ plant.
The team has thus embarked on this project due to the above.
Project Details
1) Service brake uses compressed air to engage the brake.
2) Loss of air pressure in the service brakes will disengage the brakes.
Project Details
1) Spring brake has 2 chambers: the main spring chamber and the service brake chamber.
2) It uses mechanical force of a main spring to engage the brake.
3) It is independent of the compressed air in the parked position.
Working Principle
Working Principle – the trailer with spring
brakes remains in place during coupling

Summary
S/n Service Brake Spring Brake
1 Single Chamber Duo-Chamber
2 Uses compressed to engage brake
Uses main spring to engage brake
3 Susceptible to failure due to air leakage
Independent of compressed air.
Standardization
1) Spring brakes are installed onto all trailers.
2) All drivers are trained on its working principal.
3) Risk assessment worksheet updated.
4) Maintenance carried out by trained techinicians.
Tangible Results
1) No “runaway” trailer.
2) No lost time incident due to above.
3) Zero claim from property damages from customers.
Intangible Results
1) Improved in drivers’ confidence.
2) Better company’s reputation.
