If you have friends student teaching this semester, realize that the rules will be different for you than they were for them. 12 Due to Changes in state regulations, standards and assessments, there is little to no flexibility for student teaching even from a year ago. 13 Strict MoPTA Policies 14 Strict MoPTA Policies Will no longer be a Pilot during Fall 2016 as it has been the last two years. Removal from Student Teaching will have dire consequences for MoPTA completion You Must Be Fully Committed to Student Teach 15 In order to student teach in the Fall 2016 Semester, you must meet the following requirements by the end of the Spring 2016 Semester: 16 You must be fully admitted to the Teacher Education Program. You must meet all qualifications including: A minimum GPA of 2.50 Must be admitted to your Major Department Must have a cleared FBI Criminal Background Check Must have passed all sections of the C-BASE exam prior to December 31, 2013 or have passed all sections of the MoGEA (Undergraduates)** Must have taken the Missouri Educator Profile (MEP) and have discussed it with your academic advisor. **C-BASE No Longer Accepted for State Certification after December 31, Keep in Mind Take the Missouri Content Assessment for your major (Unless you passed the Praxis before August 31, 2014)** The Missouri Content Assessment is required to have been taken prior to May 1, 2016 You do not have to pass it before you student teachMust be passed to get your teaching certificate UCM PolicyAll required courses must be completed prior to student teaching. **Praxis no longer accepted for state certification after December 31, Keep in Mind Appeals to the Teacher Education Committee should only be filed if there are Extenuating Circumstances. Extenuating Circumstances do not include: Having a GPA below 2.50 Not having all coursework completed prior to student teaching Not passing the MoGEA Not having taken the Missouri Content Assessment Not having been admitted to Teacher Ed. 19 Keep in Mind When you receive anfromRead it immediately Read it in its entiretyNot just the first couple of sentences We dont send out tweetsusually ours have quite a bit of detail to them 20 Reality Check 21 Removals from Student Teaching Placement Hurts our entire program including the placement prospects of those who follow. Even more Problematic with MoPTA 22 Removals from Student Teaching Placement Things have changed drastically in just the past year. Much Less Flexibility than in past because of new standards & assessments If you can not be fully committed to student teachingDont do it! 23 Keep in Mind You will be a Guest in the school district and in the school building(s) where you are assigned to student teach. School Districts do not have to place or take student teachers 24 Keep in Mind You are expected to conduct yourself as a professional at all times. 25 Professionalism In the Past 8 Years Student Teachers have been removed for: Chronic Lateness Social Media Issues Not informing anyone about being absent Not attending required district meetings Cell phone usage/Computer Issues Lack of lesson plans and other types of lack of preparation Inability to accept constructive criticism Insensitivity to the needs of students Dress Informing Cooperating Teacher they were teaching incorrectly Insubordination to: The Principal and/or their Cooperating Teacher 26 Professionalism Student Teaching Comes First Need to approach this as though you are a contracted teacher Working with other peoples kids Job/Work will not be an excuse for not performing up to level in student teaching Strongly Discourage working at another job during Student Teaching SemesterEven more so because of MoPTA. Can not receive pay from district you are student teaching in This will not be your typical 12 Hours of University Credit 27 Professionalism Student Teaching begins the day that your Cooperating Teacher is contracted to start the new school year or new semester. For Fall Semester, that means you are there the first day your Cooperating Teacher requires them to return in August (July). Attend all Faculty and Professional Development Meetings. 28 Professionalism You are expected to attend: Faculty Meetings Professional Development Meetings Parent-Teacher Meetings Any and all meetings that your Cooperating Teacher is expected to attend 29 Professionalism Always Remember: Student Teaching is more like a job than a class Consider Student Teaching as a 4- month long job interview 30 Professionalism While Student Teaching: The Five Bes: Be On Time Be Courteous Be Dependable Be Responsible Be Prepared 31 Attendance Student Teachers are expected to report every day. There are NO Vacation or Personal Days provided during the Student Teaching Semester. School districts are getting more picky. Make sure that all of your paperwork is done correctly and on time. Being Late may mean your paperwork gets to the School Districts Late and may keep you from being placed in your choice of districts!! 42 43 Make sure that you have all three of the forms filled out before the Checklist Meeting If the forms are not ready, you will be asked to attend a later meeting. Checklist Meeting will last 30 minutes. You will not be placed without attending one of these Meetings! Youll be given a copy of the checklist Keep it! Do Not Be Late!! 44 Final Placement Request We will send your paperwork to your first choicecan not guarantee order after that. Make sure that district is your first choice! You will not be placed in your home district unless it is a large district (i.e. Blue Springs, Independence, etc.) List Four school districtsnot individual school buildings. Do not attempt to arrange a placement for yourself, or select your supervising teacher. All placements must be arranged through our office and through the school districts! We enroll you for Student Teaching and any other classes required by your major department through our office. List clearly and concisely any unusual conditions that might affect your student teaching placement. Coaching (athletics) does not dictate a students placement. Coaching does not count as Student Teaching hours. Keep us informed regarding any changes: address, phone number, name, etc. Our office is not automatically informed when you make a change in another office. Final Placement Request Once you submit this form: No Changes will be made unless it is at the request of your department. Make sure that the four school districts you choose are four districts that you are willing to student teach in. We may not be able to go in the order that you picked. We can not guarantee placement in any district including your first choice. 45 Final Placement Request Music Ed. Students Placement Requests must be initialed/ signed by either Dr. Zabriskie for Vocal or Dr. Luberoff for Instrumental before you bring them to the Checklist Meeting. 46 Final Placement Request Art Students Placement Requests must be initialed/ signed by Dr. Weed before you bring them to the Checklist Meeting. 47 Final Placement Request Middle School Majors: List the subject area in which you are receiving your certification (example: Middle School Math, Middle School Social Studies, etc.) 48 Final Placement Request Check Clinical Services website for district requirements. If interested in student teaching in Independencelist as first choice only 49 Student Teaching is a 16-Week Assignment It may not be a perfect placement It is not a life-long contract Our Priority: The placement will work for your certification 50 51 District Requirements Some districts require all or part of the following:* Transcripts Personal Interviews Health Exams Surveys Those commitments must be met prior to placement. Any expenses are the responsibility of the Student Teacher. Check Our Website for Specifics The St. Louis area districts will require all four of these District Requirements Check our Website for other district requirements such as: Resumes Cover Letters Interviews 52 53 Student Teacher Information Form This form is your application and the marketing tool that our office uses to assist with your placement. It must be typed. Be certain your response to each section is clear, concise, and thoughtful. Check for and Correct all Spelling and Grammatical Errors!! Have another person read your form and check for errors. 54 Information Form (Example) B.Skills and Characteristics Indicate special skills and personal qualities which will be of value to you as a teacher (music, crafts, sports, etc.) C.Experiences Indicate past experiences that you think might contribute to your effectiveness as a teacher and aid you in working with children. Positions of responsibility held. Sunday School and Bible School teaching. Swimming lessons, little league coaching. D.Organizational memberships and/or activities engaged in and honors earned Class and organizational offices held in high school and at the university. Other leadership positions held E.Pre-student teaching experiences (Field Experience observation/participation, teacher aide work, micro-teaching, whole-class teaching, etc.) List approximate hours or number of times for each activity. Field experiences, PDS, lessons taught to students, substituting, tutoring 55 Authorization for Release of Information Placement can not be processed without a completed Authorization for Release of Information Form. Check the box. Clearance for Enrollment You must be recommended by your Major Department in order to student teach. We generate this recommendation form through our office. The Departmental Approval to Student Teach 56 57 Student Teaching Request Paperwork Will be sent to the school districts no later than February 10. 58 Placement Letter Please read the entire letter as soon as you receive it and follow its directions! Background Check Background Checks are good for 1 full year. SCHOOL DISTRICTS REQUIRE THAT BACKGROUND CHECKS BE CURRENT WHEN STUDENT TEACHING STARTS You must have a current background check no later than May 1, 2016You must have a current background check no later than May 1, Background Check You must use 3M/Cogent You must first register with Missouri Automated Criminal History (MACHS) UCM code is 2300 Call for appointment Cost is $ Background Check The Clinical Services & Certification Office does fingerprinting in 2170 Lovinger. You must pass the Missouri Content Assessment(s) before applying for certification. If possible, take assessment at UCM. As a Developing Candidate, you: Are Prepared Possess Necessary Knowledge Apply and Demonstrate Skills Consistently Meet all Basic Expectations of a Beginning Teacher 80 MEES Formative Assessment Form Four to Six Targeted Indicators should be Tracked During Each Observation The Student Teacher is notified in Advance of Targeted Indicators to be Observed Each Observed Targeted Indicator should be Rated 0 to 3 During Each Observation Individual Teacher Candidate Growth should be Considered Throughout the Semester as Indicators are Evaluated Targeted Indicators may be Evaluated More than One Time During the Semester 81 MEES Formative Assessment Form If the University Supervisor Observes Quality Indicator Activity Other Than What was Targeted for that Observation Can Score the Indicator If it is in the Positive.
