1 SIGNALS CORP MUSEUM Keeping the lines of communication open This museum is dedicated to preserving the history of the Royal Australian Signals Corp. Open Tue 9.30-3.30. 2 HEIDELBERG REPAT Care and commemoration Opening as a military hospital in 1941, this facility became a repatriation hospital in 1947. Memorabilia, plaques, a Gallipoli Garden Memorial and a chapel acknowledge this special history. A rose garden commemorates nurses who lost their lives in WWII. Banksia St, Heidelberg. 3 ANZAC MEMORIAL, NORTHCOTE A fitting tribute Set inside the 13 hectare All Nations Park, the Anzac Memorial honours those who fought in the two World Wars. The Memorial features a Veterans Walk and a bronze sculpture of HMAS Berrima, which served in Australia’s first naval conflict in WWI. All Nations Park, Dennis St, Northcote. 4 PRESTON TOWN HALL MEMORIAL A centre for the community An elaborate Edwardian memorial to local servicemen in WWI stands proudly next to Preston Town Hall. The Hall, a handsome building, was headquarters of RAF No 7 Fighter Sector from 1942-45. 350 High St, Preston. 5 QUEENS PARK Serving King and Country in South Africa The park contains a memorial honouring Essendon men who served in the Boer War. There is also an impressive granite monument, commemorating servicemen who lost their lives in WWI. Queens Park, Mt Alexander Rd, Moonee Ponds. Follow the Melbourne Suburban Trail and you will get a strong sense of the Melbourne of the past, particularly the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Impressive memorials at each RSL honour servicemen from the local community – built using funds raised by public subscription. Melbourne at that time had a strong local identity and community spirit. As you would expect, the sites are varied. Naval history is explored both at Williamstown and at the site of the HMVS Cerberus. The Australian National Aviation Museum offers an opportunity to examine some of Australia’s wartime aircraft; here you will learn about notable Australians ranging from Victoria Cross winners, to Sir John Monash and Vice Admiral William Creswell. An evocative tribute to comradeship in the Vietnam War is also part of your journey. WWII conflicts in Papua New Guinea, against the Japanese, were brutal and very close to home. The Running Rabbits Museum and the Kokoda Memorial Trail provide a place to reflect. But be warned: the Memorial Trail, with its famous ‘1,000 steps’, is steep and not for the faint-hearted. 100 places for 100 years MELBOURNE SUBURBAN VICTORIAN WAR HERITAGE TRAILS 100 places for 100 years - Victorian War Heritage Trails commemorates the Anzac Centenary. An App and a series of complementary brochures guide visitors to important war memorials across Victoria by way of eight tour routes from North- West Victoria to Central Melbourne to Gippsland. 7 BUST OF VICE-ADMIRAL CRESWELL Father of the Royal Australian Navy

Vice-Admiral Sir William Creswell (1852-1933) is regarded as Founder of the Australian Navy. After a career in the Royal Navy, he commanded the new Commonwealth Naval Forces in 1904 and prepared the navy for WWI.Catani Gardens, St Kilda.

6 WILLIAMSTOWN FORESHORE A floating museumHMAS Castlemaine, a Bathurst-class minesweeper built at Williamstown and launched in 1941 is now a nautical museum at Gem Pier. Nearby on the foreshore is the anchor of HMVS Nelson, the first flagship of the Victorian Colonial Navy. Commonwealth Reserve, Williamstown.

13 AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL AVIATION MUSEUM A hive of activity With a collection of nearly 50 aircraft, the Australian National Aviation Museum is one of the largest aviation museums in Australia. A DAP Mk21 Beaufighter is on display and the oldest surviving Beaufort Bomber is being restored.Moorabbin Airport, Corner First Street and Second Ave, Moorabbin.

14 THE VIETNAM MEMORIAL / SOUTH VIETNAM MEMORIAL Side by sideTwo soldiers, one Australian, one South Vietnamese, strive and endure together in this moving sculpture. The only Victorian memorial to South Vietnamese soldiers, you will also see ‘Huey’ a medical evacuation helicopter, commemorating the Australian–American alliance.44 Clow St, Dandenong.

15 SRINGVALE WAR CEMETERY Land fit for heroesThe cemetery set aside two acres during WWII, primarily for soldiers who died after returning from service overseas. A registry of names is available. The Victoria Cremation Memorial pays tribute to the 75 servicemen who died and were cremated in Victoria during WWII.

16 KOKODA MEMORIAL TRAIL 1,000 steps in historyThe Kokoda Track Campaign in Papua New Guinea in WWI resonates with all Australians. The memorial walk extends along Ferntree Gully and up the famous 1,000 steps. Commemorative plaques line the trail, dedicated to those who fought and died on Kokoda Dandenong Ranges National Park.

17 RUNNING RABBITS MUSEUM Who were the ‘rabbits’?During WWII, the ‘Running Rabbits’ fought bravely to prevent the Japanese from advancing along the Kokoda Track and capturing Port Moresby. Find out why General Blamey advised his troops not to run ‘like rabbits’. 1 Mast Gully Rd, Upwey. Open Thu 10-12, Sun 10-12.

8 PRAHAN HONOUR ROLL Among those who servedThe Prahran Honour Board in the RSL Memorial Hall lists 1,953 local WWI servicemen. It is said to be Australia’s second largest indoor board, after that of the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. General Sir John Monash is listed alongside all others who served.301 High St, Prahran.

9 CAULFIELD RSL Hospital to social clubWWI convalescents from the 11th General Hospital formed the Caulfield and District Returned Sailors and Soldiers Social Club – later the Caulfield RSL. High-profile members include Lieutenant General Sir Stanley Savige, founder of Legacy and Arthur ‘Harry’ Cobby, WWI flying hero.4 St. Georges Rd, Elsternwick.

10 GRAVE OF SIR JOHN MONASH Pillar of the communityConsidered one of the best Allied Generals of WWI, Sir John Monash commanded the Fourth Infantry Brigade at Gallipoli. On the Western Front, he led the successful attack at the Battle of Amiens. His state funeral in 1931 drew around 300,000 mourners.

11 HMVS CERBERUS Ignominious end to an illustrious careerHMVS Cerberus, built in 1870, served in three Naval forces (Victorian, Commonwealth and Royal Australian) until 1924. Sold for scrap and sunk off Half Moon Bay, there have been several campaigns to conserve her due to her rarity and role in naval history. Black Rock Pier, Beach Park.

12 CHELTENHAM MEMORIAL Digging deep in their pocketsTwo memorials stand behind the Cheltenham RSL: one for local soldiers who fought in the Boer War and one for WWI servicemen. Both were funded by community subscription.289 Centre Dandenong Rd, Cheltenham.
