Freddie Lund: So, as the driver, I ultimately determine how effi cient my car is?

Yes and no. Basically, BMW leaves it up to the driver to decide how much they want to modify their driving style. However, when they activate the ECO PRO Mode, the vehicle characteristics also change. For example, there’s a feature that stops the automatic air conditioning and the seat heating from running on the highest setting. In addition, the driver can also select the ECO PRO Route in the navigation system. This setting will calculate the route with the lowest fuel consumption, taking into account your driving style, the traffi c situation and route profi le while adding only minimal time to your drive.

BMW:On the contrary: BMW Effi cientDynamics combines both of these things. This technology package lowers emissions but still ensures impressive driving dynamics. This is best exemplifi ed by the new BMW TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder engines. They contribute towards the BMW Series’ outstanding performanceto fuel consumption ratio that’s among the best in its class.

Freddie Lund: What are the latest developments from BMW Effi cientDynamics?

One completely new feature is the ECO PRO Mode. This is based on the fact that the driver holds the key to greater fuel effi ciency with more economical driving. By giving the driver feedback and recommendations on their driving, it allows up to a percent reduction in fuel consumption. In this mode, what is known as the bonus mileage is displayed in the on-board computer. It tells the driver how many kilometres they have gained by using the tips given. Plus, if you opt for the

extended instrument panel, the rev counter also includes an Effi cientDynamics display. It shows how far the accelerator pedal should be depressed to achieve effi cient acceleration.

Adam Lund: It sounds a bit like a computer game.

Yes, you could compare it to scoring points in a computer game. At BMW, as you know, driving pleasure is a priority. And if something’s fun, it

Choose from over music genres, to access a music library that currently comprises over one million songs. Use the “Love” and “Ban” buttons in the Control Display to defi ne your musical preferences. The smartphone is connected to the car via the snap-in adapter or a cable recommended by BMW. This function requires the Navigation System Professional.


LANE DEPARTURE WARNING –STAY ON TRACK, STAY SAFE.This option detects lane markings on the road. When the vehicle is threatening to run over the marking, the driver is alerted by a light vibration through the steering wheel. If the driver has activated the indicator, meaning that the lane change is intentional, no warning is given.

SPEED LIMIT INFO –THE SPEED LIMIT IS RIGHT WHERE YOU NEED IT – WITHIN VIEW.This driver assistance system, available upon request, shows the current speed limit and information on no-overtaking zones in the instrument cluster with extended functionality. A special camera registers relevant traffi c signs and the information is processed via a control unit along with data from the navigation system. Features including the rain sensor are also incorporated, so that variable speed limits that apply in wet conditions or at certain times of day are also registered. In this way, the driver is appropriately informed of the situation ahead.

BMW CONNECTED DRIVE DRIVER ASSISTANCE –A CO-DRIVER WHO THINKS AHEAD.BMW ConnectedDrive Driver Assistance includes innovative functions that enhance safety and convenience, maximising your driving pleasure.Inch-perfect parking? Park Distance Control (PDC) helps you do it. More light in the dark? The High-Beam Assist takes care of it.

DRIVING ASSIST – LEAN BACK AND LEAVE THE ROAD TO YOUR BMW.Driving Assist combines the camera-based systems lane departure warning and collision warning. From a speed of approx. km/h, the system draws the driver’s attention to an unintentional lane change by means of slight vibrations in the steering wheel. Collision warning detects cars ahead and warns of an imminent risk of collision. Pedestrians are detected too, so the driver is warned of a potential collision and if necessary the brakes are applied. In addition, the Attentiveness Assist monitors the driver’s steering response for signs of tiredness and signals any irregular driving behaviour on the Control Display.

PARKING ASSIST –

A WELCOME TOUCH.

This optional driver assistance system makes parallel parking easier. When travelling at speeds below km/h, the system measures any parking gaps the vehicle passes. When a large enough gap has been found, the Park Assist will do the steering, while the driver continues to operate the accelerator and brake pedals – supported by acoustic signals and instructions in the Control Display (not available with / R tyres).

DAZZLE-FREE HIGH-BEAM ASSISTANCE –

INTELLIGENT VISION.

Avoid dazzling other road users: the optional High-Beam Assist detects sources of light in the vehicle’s vicinity and switches between high and low beam as traffi c allows. When the system is active, an image sensor behind the interior mirror monitors traffi c and light conditions. The assist function then uses these sensor images to decide whether or not the high-beam lights can be switched on. The high-beam is switched off whenever it detects vehicles in front or oncoming traffi c, or when there is suffi cient ambient light.

REAR VIEW CAMERA –

ALWAYS KNOW WHAT’S BEHIND YOU WHEN YOU PARK.

The Rear View camera clearly shows the area behind the vehicle on the Control Display. It provides a better view when reversing in parking situations at speeds below km/h. In models with a tow bar, the Rear View camera features an extra zoom function (available in conjunction with Park Distance Control and a navigation system).

With a focus on sustainability along the entire value chain and a range of supplementary mobility services, BMW i is redefi ning our understanding of individual mobility.

Auto Start/Stop function. The Auto Start/Stop function switches off the engine when the vehicle comes to a temporary standstill (e.g. at traffi c lights) to further reduce overall fuel consumption. A display in the rev counter indicates that the function is active. And even when the engine is switched off, the air conditioning system still maintains the desired interior temperature, for continued comfort despite prolonged waits.

BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. In the petrol engines, this package of innovations combines a TwinScroll turbocharger with Valvetronic, Double-VANOS and High Precision Injection. In the diesel engines, CommonRail direct injection is combined with a turbocharger featuring variable turbine geometry. This signifi cantly reduces the fuel consumption of the BMW TwinPower Turbo petrol and diesel engines – while noticeably increasing performance across all engine speeds.

Brake Energy Regeneration. Brake Energy Regeneration means that the generator (alternator) usually only generates electricity when the driver brakes or takes their foot off the accelerator. Previously unused kinetic energy is transformed into electrical energy and fed into the battery.

Electric power steering. Unlike conventional hydraulic steering systems, the electric power steering only uses energy during actual steering. The electric motor remains inactive when driving straight ahead.

ECO PRO Mode. As soon as you switch to the ECO PRO Mode, everything is geared towards greater effi ciency and depending on your individual driving style, this results in a reduction in fuel consumption of up to percent, as shown in an internal BMW study. Additional features such as Coasting, the Route-Ahead Assist and ECO PRO Route enable further savings of up to percent. Accelerator pedal response, transmission characteristics and gearshift points are optimised and heating/air conditioning is intelligently adapted. The Control Display indicates which BMW Effi cientDynamics features are helping reduce fuel consumption at any given point. You’ll also receive ECO PRO tips that relate to your current driving situation to help you boost effi ciency even further.

Optimum Shift Indicator. Timely gear shifts are one of the simplest and most effective ways to save fuel. This is where the Optimum Shift Indicator can help. It shows the driver what gear to use in order to drive more effi ciently.

Eight-speed Steptronic transmission with Auto Start/Stop function. The particularly smooth gear shifts of the new eight-speed Steptronic transmission produce greater engine effi ciency at every speed. The result: a reduction in fuel consumption and more comfortable gear changes. Combined with the Auto Start/Stop function and the “Coasting” setting of the ECO PRO mode, it offers best-in-class driving comfort and signifi cantly lower fuel consumption and emissions levels.

This intelligent four-wheel drive system perfectly adapts the ride to diffi cult road conditions by always ensuring maximum traction. Using data such as the steering angle or wheel rotation speeds, xDrive reacts immediately upon detecting a tendency to over- or understeer, and employs a controlled clutch to fl exibly distribute drive power between the axles of your BMW in only fractions of a second, ensuring optimum road adhesion. As a result, xDrive combines the benefi ts of all-wheel-drive – traction, directional stability and driving safety – with typical BMW Series agility.

THE IDEAL FOUNDATION FOR SUPERIOR DRIVING DYNAMICS. AN OUTSTANDING SUSPENSION.Pure driving dynamics – it’s a quality embodied by every single BMW without exception. And the technical basis for this thrilling driving experience lies in the suspension. It ensures optimal contact with the road surface and ideal road holding in every situation – BMW engineers are continually re-inventing and refi ning those classic BMW driving dynamics to ensure that every BMW chassis puts the driver in direct contact with the vehicle and the passion for dynamic driving – while also providing the highest levels of safety and comfort. In the BMW Series, this is achieved by a weight distribution of almost : between the front and rear axles, as well as neutral steering behaviour, a high level of directional stability and fantastic traction. Rear-wheel drive. The BMW Series is the only model in its class to feature rear-wheel drive. This type of drive provides the kind of extraordinary agility and manoeuvrability that BMW is renowned for. Italso enables the vehicle weight to be ideally distributed across the entire running gear, which optimises traction and thereby the transmission of power to the road.

Lightweight suspension. The suspension of the BMW Series is designed to perfectly complement the engine and transmission. You can feel it in the precision of the steering, the agile handling, superb acoustic characteristics, lack of body roll and direct feedback from the road. The front suspension consists of a lightweight double-joint trailing-arm axle, which combines maximum strength with minimum weight. Together with the multi-arm rear axle and the rear-wheel drive, sporty handling is guaranteed.

Adaptive suspension. The electronically controlled dampers are adapted to your driving style and the conditions of the road. You can modify the damper characteristics via the Driving Experience Control switch. A noticeably fi rmer damper setting is activated when the Sport or Sport+ mode is selected via the Driving Experience Control switch. The optional adaptive suspension includes a chassis that has been lowered by millimetres, which does nothing to reduce the comfort of the BMW Series.

Steering. Unwanted torque steer on the front axle is completely foreignto the BMW Series, thanks to the strict separation of steering and drive train. The steering power is evenly distributed and the steering angle is small. As a result, the driver can “feel” road conditions and receives more direct feedback when cornering. On top of it all, the electric power steering supports the reduction of fuel consumption.

Variable sport steering. This optional mechanical system constantly adjusts the steering ratio to suit the driving situation. With the help of Servotronic, it reduces the steering movement required to turn the wheels to make light work of parking and manoeuvring. Furthermore, it increases agility, noticeable in particular when driving dynamically around tight bends and curves (standard with Mi).

Driving Experience Control, incl. ECO PRO Mode. This allows drive and suspension components (such as steering) to be individually adapted via the Comfort, Sport and Sport+ modes. Activating the ECO PRO Mode helps optimise fuel consumption and displays the bonus mileage in the instrument panel.

Chassis. The BMW Series features a particularly rigid passenger cell. This not only leads to increased steering precision and agility, but also improves passenger safety. The body only yields in precisely defi ned areas at the front and rear. Should an accident occur, these deformation areas are capable of absorbing a large amount of the impact, thereby minimising the severity of the collision as it happens.

Adaptive Headlights with variable light distribution, incl. cornering lights and the High-Beam Assist, illuminate bends at greater distances by optimally adjusting the swivelling headlights as soon as the driver turns the steering wheel. The variable light distribution adjusts the headlights according to the current speed. The lights are lowered for greater visibility when driving in the city and at high speeds they’re raised to further extend the driver’s field of vision. To improve short-range visibility, the cornering lights integrated into the fog lights are automatically activated, even when the vehicle is at a standstill, as soon as the indicator is switched on or the steering wheel is turned.

Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), incl. Cornering Brake Control (CBC), hill-start and braking assist, brake drying function and braking readiness. DSC recognises the risk of skidding before it occurs and stabilises the car in milliseconds. The traction mode sub-function (DTC) allows increased wheel slip to optimise acceleration in certain driving conditions and to enable more dynamic driving.

Disc brakes, all-round (front, inner-vented) are specially designed to ensure maximum driving safety and easy operation. The braking system is characterised by its long service life and the provision of consistently short braking distances.

Airbags are just one of the safety elements in your BMW that make up a perfectly coordinated system. Six airbags are installed for precise protection: driver and front passenger airbags, the head airbags (curtain) for front and rear as well as side airbags stowed in the front seatbacks.

The front and rear bumpers feature easily-replaceable deformation elements that absorb impacts at speeds up to km/h.

Passenger cell. The system of members and node connections in the functionally constructed body structure combined with the strategic deployment of high-strength materials delivers maximum passive safety in front, side and rear crashes. Defined deformation zones mean that the body structure can absorb impact energy, increasing passenger protection.

BMW restraint system for the driver and front passenger, comprises three-point seat belts combined with integral tensioners and force limiters. So in the event of a collision, passengers are held safely in their seats. The seat belt buckles in the rear are marked to avoid them being incorrectly fastened.

Runflat tyres. Reinforced side walls prevent the tyres from completely collapsing or loosening from the rim if the air pressure drops, helping you make it safely to the next repair shop. The tyre pressure monitor lets the driver the driver know when the air pressure in one of the tyres drops % or more below the recommended bar. After a tyre has been changed, the system must be initialised with the correct air pressure in all the tyres.

Standard / Optional equipment.

Dynamic brake lights with indicator function help following traffi c to

instantly differentiate between light deceleration and more urgent situations –

for increased safety on the road.

Xenon headlights for high and low beam, incl. automatic headlight range controls, headlight washing system, accent lights with LED technology and three-

dimensional LED rear lights – for the best possible illumination of the road at night and in poor visibility. The four LED light rings are fl attened at the top and bottom

and come with daytime running lights.

Adaptive headlights with variable light distribution, incl. cornering lights and High-Beam Assist, illuminate bends as soon as the driver turns the steering

wheel. The variable light distribution adjusts the headlights according to the current speed. The lights are lowered for greater visibility when driving in the city and

at high speeds they’re raised to further extend the driver’s fi eld of vision.

High-Beam Assist helps the driver at night by automatically switching

between high and low beam depending on the presence of vehicles in front or

oncoming traffi c. The lights are also automatically dimmed when street lighting

is suffi cient.

Halogen headlights for high and low beam with integrated accent lights

(passive anti-dazzle protection).

Fog lights integrated in the front apron – for improved safety in poor visibility

Sun protection glass prevents the interior from heating up excessively

when exposed to direct sunlight, thereby ensuring a pleasant interior temperature.

The more heavily tinted rear windows behind the B-pillars absorb the sunlight

to a greater degree.

BMW Individual roofl iner in Anthracite includes A, B, C and D-pillars,

sun blinds and roof handles in refi ned Black.

Glass roof, with electric slide and lift controls, comfort opening and closing

function via remote control and tip function.

Park Assist makes it easier to parallel park in roadside spaces. The system

works by measuring potential spaces when driving past at speeds below km/h.

Once a suffi cient space has been found, the Park Assist takes over the steering

while the driver supports the manoeuvre by working the accelerator and brake

pedal. (Equipment not available in conjunction with " steel wheels with

/ R tyres.)

Rear View camera clearly shows the area behind the vehicle on the Control

Display. The Rear View camera provides a better view when reversing in parking

situations at speeds below km/h. In models with a tow bar, the Rear View

camera has an extra zoom function.

Park Distance Control (PDC) front and rear or just rear, makes parking and

manoeuvring in tight spaces much easier. The proximity of obstacles is indicated

acoustically (and visually in the Control Display in conjunction with a navigation

system or BMW Radio Professional).

Alarm system offers effective protection with remote control and

anti-theft system. If someone attempts to break into or move the vehicle, an

acoustic signal is triggered and the hazard warning lights are activated.

Personal Profi le. Depending on your chosen equipment, personal settings

such as the temperature and air distribution of the automatic air conditioning,

the position of the driver’s seat and exterior mirrors, and the radio settings are

BMW Motorplan. All new BMWs

sold in South Africa include a

year/ km Motorplan

maintenance contract. This covers

all service, maintenance and repairs

resulting from normal wear and tear,

excluding tyres and fuel. As with any

specifi ed in the Motorplan agreement.

Repairs resulting from negligence or
