Fidget Spinner
2
How many of you have one? What is it for?
Have you ever wondered how it was made? Have you ever wondered why there are different kinds
of fidget spinners? Have you ever wondered which kind / type of material is
best for use to make a fidget spinner? Is it possible for us to replace some of the materials of
the fidget spinner?
There is a scientific way to find out all of the answers those questions… Several doctors have actually noted that the use
of the fidget spinner is not actually advisable.

Scientific Inquiry — Session 1Scientific Method
Scientific Inquiry
• An investigation that consist of series of steps to follow to achieve a goal
Scientific Method
• Body of techniques for investigating
5
Scientific Inquiry — Session 1Scientific Method
Question:
• What kind / type of material is best for use in making a fidget spinner?
Answer:
• If metal is the strongest material that we can use, then it would be the best to use as a fidget spinner

Scientific Method — Session 1Steps in doing an inquiry…
Question / Problem
• What do you want to learn about? • Should not be answerable by YES or NO only • Can be solved through experimentation
Research• Gather information
Hypothesis
• An “Educated” guess that answers the problem
• Predict a possible answer to the problem • If…. then…
8
Scientific Method — Session 1Steps in doing an inquiry…
Procedure / Methodology
• Step by step experiment design to test the hypothesis
• Includes detailed material list and procedures • The end result must be quantifiable /
measurable • Includes the variables
Collect and Analyze Data• Information collected during the experiment • Confirm results by retesting • Includes tables, graphs and photographs
9
Scientific Method — Session 1Steps in doing an inquiry…
Observation
• Written description of what was observed during the experiment
Conclusion
• A statement that accepts or rejects the hypothesis
• Recommendations for further study and possible improvements to the procedure
10
Variables — Session 1Scientific Method
Independent
• What you change in an experiment • Cause
Dependent• What was observed due to the change • Effect
Constant / Controlled
• What was kept the same all throughout the experiment

Variables — Session 1Scientific Method

Situation:Ronald wants to find out if the amount of burps a soda give varies / depends on the brand of
soda.• Problem: • Which soda brand gives the most amount of
burps in a day? • Hypothesis: • If the soda brand is more carbonated, then it
will give the most number of burps in a day.

A review on variables — Session 1Scientific Method
Example
Which soda brand gives us the most amount of burps in a day?
• Independent • Different soda brands
• Dependent • Number of burps
• Controlled • Amount of soda intake, Person drinking the
soda, Time to drink the soda etc.

A review on variables — Session 1Scientific Method
Example
Which brand of microwavable popcorn has the least amount of un-popped kernels?
• Independent • Brand of Microwave Popcorn
• Dependent • Amount of un-popped kernels
• Controlled • Time in Microwave, Brand of the Microwave,
Power of the Microwave etc.
