    Twenty horses with colic referredto the Liverpool University EquineHospital since 1992 were found atlaparotomy to have obstruction of thecolon associated with a mural lesionlocated in all cases in the left dorsalcolon. All cases had severe submu-cosal edema with focal to diffuseeosino-philic inflammation.     Investigation of the role of thetapewormA n o p l o c e p ha l a p e r fo l ia ta incolic has been hampered by difficultiesof diagnosis. The development of aserodiagnostic ELISA, utilizing the

    host's IgG(T) response to a 12/13kDaprotein secreted by the parasite, wasdescribed. Validation of the assaydemonstrated good correlation ofELISA optical density with tapeworminfection intensity (r = 0.63). The assaywas used to evaluate tapeworminfection as a risk factor for ilealimpaction colic (as diagnosed atlaparotomy) and spasmodic colic, in amatched case-control study.Univariate analysis demonstrated oddsratios of 44 (95% C.I. 7.4) and 3 (1.3,7.5) for the risk of ileal impaction coli cand spasmodic colic respectively, inthe presence of tapeworm infection.Condi t ional logist ic regressionanalysis, using ELISA O.D. as anindicator of infection intensity,demonstrated a linear relationshipbetween infection intensity and thelog-odds of disease.
