PROGRAM NOTE Horror Vacui (a fear or dislike of leaving empty spaces, especially in an artistic composition) was composed during the Summer and Fall of 2016 for the Nouveau Classical Project.

NOTE TO PERFORMERS

This piece takes most of its pitch material from the fixed scale below (see “boxed notes” in piano techniques). This scale is performed in movement 1 (catalogue of notes) in the piano part in quarter notes. Over the course of the rest of the piece this scale ascends again at a much slower pace in movements 2, 6 and 8 ending in the violin part mm.195-198. Most every gesture throughout the piece is dictated by the pitched material in this scale.

The scale above is constructed as a web which holds, supports and uplifts the form of the piece. The concept of support is an important element in this piece as a whole, for example the piano resonance is used to create a “space” in which the other instruments are enrobed and cradled in. over the course of the piece this piano resonance cuts in and out and begins to fade, thus the other instruments by their own means and in cooperation with one another attempt to recreate this lost resonant space.

GENERAL

Where a mute sign is present (never in the piano) suddenly/abruptly mute the sound of your instrument.

Dynamics in parenthesis denote a sound (i.e. toneless, muted, percussive) which will not sound at the written dynamic, however the intensity of the dynamic within the parenthesis should be executed.

Flutter tongue

Ord tone (full pitch) / air tone (mostly air with some pitch)

Closed embouchure (flute only), this symbol indicates that the embouchure should be entirely covered, the resulting sound should be completely toneless.

Air tone sounds are notated with square note heads and should contain no pitch (air tone sounds in the flute will always be accompanied by the “closed embouchure” symbol described above).

Keyclicks are notated with this sign positioned above the staff, always in combination with toneless or pitched playing.

Molto vibrato/timbre trill, this symbol is used on different notes throughout the clarinet register, where timbre trills are not available use a wide vibrato (molto vibrato). This symbol is also used in the flute part on the note G6, it is left to the discretion of the player to choose whether to execute molto vibrato or a timbre trill, though both should be used equally throughout the course of the piece. STRINGS m.s.t. / m.s.p. / ord. (molto sul tasto / molto sul pont / ordinary tone) The string players are encouraged to move as close to the fingerboard or bridge as possible, creating an airy sound near the fingerboard and exciting different partials near the bridge.

Molto vibrato (violin only) create a wide and wild vibrato up to a quarter-tone sharp and a quarter-tone flat.

Unmeasured tremolo, should always be unmeasured and never predictably rhythmic, and should always contain added accented impulses within the given dynamic.

Toneless sounds (cello only) noted with square note heads are played on the open strings by muting/resting the left hand on the indicated strings in such a way that when bowed the sound contains next to no pitch resulting in an airy/toneless sound. This technique should be performed as close to the bridge as possible, though the sound of the bow on the strings should still be present.

Raindrop technique, to execute this technique place the bow (near the frog) on the indicated open strings. Without moving the bow vertically or horizontally rotate the hair of the bow (near the frog) in a circular motion against the strings, do not lift the bow up or move it vertically/horizontally. With the bow arm add pressure (at the frog) down onto the strings while making circular motions, this should produce a scratchy-overpressure sound, aim for a sound that imitates the sound of rain or of an old record player, there should be little to no audible pitch. PIANO

Percussive pedaling, slam the foot down onto the pedal, creating a loud percussive sound, this should also excite the strings to resonate throughout the piano creating a resonant sonority from the piano itself.

Mute note inside the piano on the keyboard side of the dampers close to end of the string.

Quiver technique, create an unmeasured tremolo on the indicated pitch, the result should be non-rhythmic and contain added accented impulses within the given dynamic.

Boxed notes should be played normally and are located in movements 2 and 6, they represent a large ascending scale that is outlined in the “note to performers” above.
