PROFILER VERIFICATION
TRC Transportation Engineering Conference
May 15-17, 2018
Tymli Frierson Advanced Research Engineer
System Information and Research Division
OUTLINE
BACKGROUND
INERTIAL PROFILERS
REQUIREMENTS
VERIFICATION REQUESTS
FUTURE SCOPE
ROAD PROFILE A two-dimensional slice of a road’s
surface
Transverse (lateral)
Superelevation
Crown
Rutting and other distresses
Longitudinal
Design grade, roughness
INERTIAL PROFILERS
INERTIAL PROFILER COMPONENTS
Inertial Profiling Systems (IPS) are used to
establish the profile of the roadway surface.
To accomplish this, the equipment uses 3 instruments:
Accelerometer
Laser Height Sensor
Distance Measurement Device
INERTIAL PROFILERS
Sensors record longitudinal and vertical distances,
accelerometer
Calculate smoothness indices
Lightweight or high-speed
LASERS
Single Point Laser
Triple Laser
Line Laser
ARDOT SPECIFICATIONS
The Contractor shall furnish a California-style profilograph complying with ASTM E 1274 or an automated lightweight profilometer complying with ASTM E 950, Class I and calibrated to the California-style profilograph scale.
The Engineer will verify the calibration of the profilograph equipment as frequently as necessary to assure proper operation.
Scheduling and testing will be coordinated with the Engineer.
