InstallationWARNING! PCI cards, like all computer equipment, can be severely damaged by static electricity. Be sure that you are properly grounded before opening your computer case or touching your PCI card. StarTech.com recommends that you wear an anti-static strap when installing any computer component. If an anti-static strap is unavailable, discharge yourself of any static electricity build-up by touching a large grounded metal surface (such as the computer case) for several seconds. Also be careful to handle the PCI card by its edges and not the gold connectors.

Hardware Installation1. Turnyourcomputeroffandanyperipheralsconnectedtothecomputer(i.e.Printers,

externalharddrives,etc.).Unplugthepowercablefromtherearofthepowersupplyonthebackofthecomputeranddisconnectallperipheraldevices.

2. Removethecoverfromthecomputercase.Refertodocumentationforyourcomputersystemfordetails.

3. LocateanopenPCIorPCI-Xslotandremovethemetalcoverplateontherearofthecomputercase.

4. GentlyinsertthecardintotheopenPCIorPCI-Xslotandfastenthecard’sbrackettotherearofthecase.

NOTE:Ifinstallingthecardintoasmallformfactor/lowprofilesystem,replacingthepre-installedfullprofilebracketwiththeincludedlowprofileinstallationbracketmaybenecessary.

5. Placethecoverbackontothecomputercase.

6. InsertthepowercableintothesocketonthepowersupplyandreconnectallotherconnectorsremovedinStep1.

Driver InstallationNOTE: ThefollowinginstructionsareforWindowsusersonly.LinuxorNetwareusersshouldconsulttheReadme.txtfilesintheirrespectivefolders.DependingonyourOSandtheconfigurationofyoursystem,theinstructionsbelowmaynotbeidenticaltotheinstructionsonyourscreen.

Windows 2000/ Server 2003/ XP1. WhentheFoundNewHardwarewizardappearsonthescreen,inserttheDriverCD

intoyourCD/DVDdrive.IfyouarepromptedtoconnecttoWindowsUpdate,pleaseselectthe“No,notthistime”optionandclickNext.

2. Selecttheoption“Installfromaspecificlocation(Advanced)”andthenclicktheNextbutton.

3. Selecttheoptionto“Includethislocationinthesearch”andthenclickthe“Browse”button.

4. IntheBrowsewindow,navigatetotheCD/DVDdriveandselectopenthefolderfor“PCIGigabitLanCard(ST1000BT32)”,andthenselectthefolderfortheoperatingsystemversion.ClicktheOKbutton.

5. ClicktheNextbuttonandWindowsshouldnowstartsearchingforthedrivers.Oncethishascompleted,clicktheFinishbutton.

Windows Vista/ Server 2008 R2/ 71. WhentheFoundNewHardwarewindowappearsonthescreen,clickonthe“Locate

andinstalldriverssoftware(recommended)”option.Ifpromptedtosearchonline,selectthe“Don’tsearchonline”option.

2. Whenpromptedtoinsertthedisc,inserttheDriverCDthatcamewiththecard,intoyourCD/DVDdriveandWindowswillautomaticallyproceedtosearchtheCD.

3. IfaWindowsSecuritydialogwindowappears,clickthe“Installthisdriversoftwareanyway”optiontoproceed.

4. Oncethedriverisinstalled,clicktheClosebutton.

5. IfWindowsisunabletolocatedrivers,gobackandthistimeselecttheoptionto“BrowseMyComputer”.

6. Makesuretheoptionto“Includesubfolders”ischecked,thenclickthe“Browse”button.

7. IntheBrowsewindow,navigatetotheCD/DVDdriveandselectopenthefolderfor“PCIGigabitLanCard(ST1000BT32)”,andthenselectthefolderfortheoperatingsystem.ClicktheOKbutton.

8. ClicktheNextbuttonandWindowsshouldnowstartsearchingforthedrivers.Oncethishascompleted,clicktheFinishbutton.

HowtoUseMonitoring Your CardThecardusesoneLEDtoindicatetheconnectionrateandactivityofthecard.AGREEN/AMBER/OFFLEDindicatesthata1000/100/10Mbpsconnection(respectively)isestablishedatthatrate.AblinkingLEDindicatesthatthereistrafficflowonthenetwork.

NoLink/ActivityLEDlitat1000/100Mbpsindicatesanerror.Makesurethatalldevicesareturnedonandthatthenetworkcableisproperlyconnectedatbothends.AlsomakesurethatyournetworkcablescomplywithEIA/TIA568andatleastCat5especifications.

Ifproblemspersist,powerdownalldevicesanddisconnectallplugs.Waitatleasttensecondsthenplugthedevicesbackinandpowerthemup.

Connecting Your Card to Your NetworkDependingonhowyouareplanningonusingthecard,thedeviceyouareconnectingittoandthetypeofcableyouneedmaydiffer.Totakeadvantageofthecard’sGigabit(1000Mbits/sec)capacity,itisrecommendedthatyoualwaysuseatleastCat.5eEthernetcable.Ifyouareunsureofthetypeofcablerequiredforyourdevice,consultyourdevicemanufacturer.
