Brief History of Electric Loco Shed;
Asansol
Dt. of Commencement – May – 1969
Established in May-1959 and it is the first AC Loco Shed in
Indian Railways. The shed was originally created for
homing 80 Locomotives; subsequently some infrastructural
facilities have been added to increase 100 Locomotives.
This Shed has got the rich experience of maintaining
various types of Locomotives since its inception, ranging
from WAM-1, WAM-2, WAM-3, WAM-4, WAG-3, WAG-4,
WAP-6 to WAG-5, WAG-7 & WAM-4 Locomotives. In the
financial year 2019-20, 18 nos. WAP-4 Locomotives have
been commissioned on transfer from HWH and very soon
WAG-9 (3 Ø) Locomotives will be in holding. These
Locomotives are dedicated to freight traffic except 18 nos.
WAP-4 Locos which are for coaching services. These
Locomotives are equipped with modern devices as a result
of technological advancement like Static Inverter Unit
(SIV), Microprocessor based fault diagnostic & control
system (MPFDCS), Vigilance Control Device (VCD),
Microprocessor based Energy cum speed monitoring
system (ESMON), aerodynamic Crew Friendly Cab and
Real Time Information System (RTIS) etc.

Inception of Electric Loco Shed;
Asansol
Electric loco Shed; Asansol is the first A.C.Electric Loco
Shed over Indian Railways. Electric Loco Shed; Asansol
was started in May – 1959 by converting a small portion of
Steam Loco Shed with a holding of 45 Locos. Initially
WAM-1 Locos imported from Japan were based in this
shed. Subsequently the holding of the shed was
increased, as a few more imported Locos like WAG-2,
WAG-3 and WAM-2 were based in this shed. With the
addition of locos imported from Japan, the need for the
expansion of this shed was felt and it was expanded to
home 80 Locos in the year 1969 by taking a few more
portion of Steam Shed. By the end of 1969 the shed was
holding imported locos from continent i.e. (WAM-1 – 45 &
WAG-3 – 10), 12 imported mixed Locos from Japan
(WAM-2 – 10 & WAM-3 – 02) and 45 WAG-2 Locos which
were also imported from Japan.
During 1970 CLW manufactured WAG-4 Locos were also
homed at the shed. With the introduction of EMU rakes
from BHEL & ICF, in Calcutta suburbarn section 25 WAM-
2 Locos which were working in push-pull operation were
converted to main line operation. These Locos were also
transferred & homed at the shed. CLW started production
5 | P a g e
and the first batch of 10 WAG-4 IR5 series Locos were
commissioned and based at this shed in 1970. Gradually
the holding of WAG-4 Locos have gone up to 45.
As the holding was increasing further, the shed was further
expanded to home 110 Locos in the Year 1974 by taking
some more portion of Steam shed. More & more locos
have been added & finally shed was expanded to home
115 Locos in the year 1980. With the introduction of Air
Brake Stock, a few WAG-4 Locos were converted for dual
brake operation. Further facilities were created for
maintaining 20 dual brake locos by taking some portion of
Steam Shed. Initially 15 nos. WAP-6 Locos were based at
Baroda Loco Shed & MGS Loco shed. These Locos had a
number of maintenance problems due to defect in
mechanical & pneumatic side. After about one year of
unsuccessful trial these 15 Locos were transferred to this
shed within May’98 to Sep’98 and after a service of 09
years maintained by ELS/ASN these locos have been
transferred to ELS/HWH for conversion to WAP-4 as per
the competent authority.

AREA OF ELECTRIC LOCO SHED;
ASANSOL :
The present area of this shed is 13375 mt sq. which
includes pit area of 837 sq. mt. of total 09 nos. pits.
However after augmentation work, the shed will become
13953 mt sq as total proposed area under shed extension
work was 1958 sq. mt.
INFRASTRUCTURE :
At present ELS/ASN is holding 166 nos. of Locomotives against the existing capacity of 100 Locos. However current augmentation work is in progress for homing up to 120 Locos. 1st phase work under augmentation program has been completed 100% i.e. construction of Capital Store Building & Trip shed along with building has been completed.
13 | P a g e
Extension of Electric Loco Shed under 2nd phase of augmentation work is under progress. The overall physical progress of the shed augmentation work is 66%.
At present ELS/ASN is facing infrastructural
constraint towards discharging the responsibilities of
smooth preventive maintenance of locomotives due to
increased holding, moreover in the present scenario it
is expected that more locomotives including 3-phase
locomotives will be homed at this shed in near future
as 34 Locomotives have already been homed at
ELS/ASN within last 18 months resulting in increase
of holding from 132 to 166 Locos,
However a work of Rs.2.92 crore for further up
gradation of Electric Loco Shed, Asansol has already
been sanctioned under umbrella work to overcome
the aforesaid day to day difficulties being faced at this
end towards maintenance activities. The detailed
estimate has already been sanctioned & Tender has
been called by Civl. Engg Department.
Another works of Rs. 119998th has been proposed
through IRMPSM which has been sent to HQ after
short listing from division.
