Description of Interfaces
Um interface carries all signaling & services between MS
and BTS over radio links.
Abis interface carries signaling & services between BTS
and BSC.
A1 interface carries call control signaling between MSCand BSC.
A2 interface provides 64kbit/s PCM speech channels
between MSC and BSC.
A3 interface has two functions: Signaling and traffic. A3signaling is used to control and allocate the transmission
channels for user traffic.

MS Registration
When MS is power on, it needs to register in
mobile service area. For call permissions, it
needs to provides its authentication,
location and other call related parameters to
NSS.
It also needs to provide the information likeprotocol version and other characteristics to
the BSS.

Handoff Types
Hard handoff
MS terminates its communication with the original BTS before settingup communication with the new BTS. In such handoff, break-before-
make technique is used.
Soft handoff
During handoff MS establish connections with both original and
target BTSs. In this way MS maintains communication with two or
three sectors of different cells simultaneously.
Softer handoff
It is also similar to the Soft handoff, the only difference is it takes
place between different sectors of the same BTS within the same
frequency. In addition, the softer handoff adopts coherent combination
for signals of different branches to achieve higher signal gain than the
selective combination used in ordinary soft handoff.
NOTE: Softer handoff is not possible between two different frequency
carriers

Mobile Packet data service states
An MS be in one of the 3 states during datatransmission:
Active: In this state, physical traffic channel exists
between MS and BTS, and both sides may transmitdata.
Dormant: In this state, no physical traffic channel
exists between MS and BTS. But the PPP
connection between MS and PDSN is maintained.
NULL: In this state, neither physical connection nor
PPP link is existed.
