Hymn Notes:

“Holy, Holy, Holy” (1)

Reginald Heber wrote this hymn in 1826. He was a leading figure of

those Anglicans who, knowing firsthand the vitality of evangelical and independ-

ent church singing, urged the lifting of the church’s restrictions on the singing of

hymns in worship. He wrote hymns based on the lectionary of which this is the

most famous. It was written for Trinity Sunday, the first Sunday after Pentecost

(today) and is based in part on Revelation 4:6-11.

As a child/teen I remember my home church sang this hymn at the begin-

ning of the service—every Sunday—for twelve years! I later discovered that there

is an instruction found at the beginning of the liturgy from 1935, “The people shall

stand and join in singing the hymn ‘Holy, Holy, Holy,’ or other suitable hymn.”

Our pastor apparently ignored the last phrase, “or other suitable hymn.”

When we sing this hymn, we are not initiating praise, but joining a song

that has been going on from before time and forever—the angelic “holy, holy,

holy!”

CHILDREN’S CHRISTIAN EDUCATION 3 Yr. Olds-2nd Grade (18/19 School Year)

Children ‘s worship will be talking a break for the summer. Nursery is for children

ages birth-5 years old, during the worship service. Children’s bulletins are available

in the narthex.

9:30 AM CHILDREN’S CHRISTIAN EDUCATION 3 Yr. Olds–Kindergarten, Room 3

Students will start and stay in their classroom for the Sunday school hour with Jane

Winne.

Students will start in the sanctuary and then move to room 8 with Justine Davis

11:00 AM MIDDLE & HIGH SCHOOL

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION

The Middle & High Schoolers (6th-12th graders) are meeting this week for Sunday

School. All youth are welcome to worship together in the center-right-side of the

Sanctuary at the 9:30 Ignite service. After the service, youth will meet in the City at

10:45am for Sunday School where we will be discussing today’s message.

This Bible study meets at 11:30am on Sunday mornings in room 8. We are studying

the Book of Hebrews, using the study guide: Hebrews: Christ-Perfect Sacrifice, Per-

fect Priest by John MacArthur. If you have any questions or would like to purchase a
