1 - Description of the Programme:

Why to work on Healthy Life

Bad feeding habits and sedentary life style are a reality for millions of children around the world, and also the main cause for child overweighting. According to a research of Brazilian Geography and Statistics Institute (IBGE) - 2012, overweight in children and adolescents is nowadays a problem bigger than undernourishment in Brazil: in the last 20 years, it increased 240%. And the health problems related to it concern parents and doctors. Diseases like high blood pressure, diabetes 2, high cholesterol and high levels of fat in pancreas and liver are not anymore exclusive of adults.

In Espírito Santo overweight is also a problem. According to a research of Brazil’s Health Ministery in 2010, Vitória – Espírito Santo’s capital – is the 12th capital with the biggest number of people overweight, just like São Paulo and Maceió (Alagoas).

Annual theme

Every year, A Gazeta in the Classroom asks teachers to give suggestions on the following year’s theme. In 2011, many of them suggested themes related to Healthy Life, and so this was the chosen one for 2012.

Programme audience

This work aimed to achieve 29.678 students and their parents, 636 teachers, 348 schools, 24 monitors (responsible for A Gazeta in the Classroom in their municipalities), and also the cooks of the schools reached.

The municipalities in Espírito Santo – Brazil - targeted were:

Alfredo Chaves, Alto Rio Novo, Anchieta, Cachoeiro de Itapemirim, Cariacica, Colatina, Domingos Martins, Guarapari, Itaguaçu, Itarana, Linhares, Marataízes, Pancas, Piúma, Rio Novo do Sul, Santa Maria de Jetibá, São Domingos do Norte, Sooretama, Vargem Alta, Vila Velha and Vitória.

Objectives

This work’s aim was to allert about the damages of overweight and sedentary life, making the target audience realize that there was a problem to solve and to make the decision of overcoming it, thinking about solutions based on informations from newspaper, radio, TV and internet. By working with monitors, cooks and teachers, we reached children and their parents. The effort was to lead them to recognize the value of healthy feeding and exercise. The entire school community was involved and sensitized about the need to make a change, for a better life quality.

This meeting’s objective was to teach monitors on how to have a healthy feeding. It was an entire day with activities such as:

-  Coffee break "Brazil Kitchen” using stalks, leaves and seeds.

-  Talking to Zainer Silva, editor of Life section in A GAZETA.

-  Workshop with Gisele Bordeguini, Brazil Kitchen’s nutricionist, with general orientation about healthy feeding and teaching on how to produce “kitchen garden juice”.

-  Study of the 1st Workshop, named “Healthy Feeding”, to be done with teachers participant of A Gazeta in the Classroom.

What’s Brazil Kitchen

Brazil Kitchen is a program of SESI (Industry’s Social Service) that has the objective of teaching people how to have a healthy feeding, using parts of the food that usually are thrown away, such as stalks, leaves and seeds. It shows that it is possible to eat well spending very little. Kitchen Brazil, in Espírito Santo, has a truck that goes to the municipalities making workshops and also attends those who demand their service using regular kitchens. It’s a successful initiative that has no costs to the participants.

-  Study the heeling power and benefits of diferent kinds of food.

-  Allert about the ideal quantity of food and drink we can have and show the problems that can be caused by bad feeding.

-  Stimulate the tasting of new kinds of food, using funny ways of organizing them in the plate.

-  Talk about how to storage and handle food properly.

-  Allert about the danger of toxic products in agriculture, stimulating the schools to have a kitchen garden with organic production.

What is Ação Global

Ação Global is a Rede Globo and SESI program, in partnership with the local communication enterprise (TV Gazeta Norte, that belongs to Rede Gazeta). Its objective is to promote actions in areas such as education, citizenship, health and culture. During an entire day, population can have acess to services.

In order to let people know about Ação Global in Linhares, SESI promoted Brazil Kitchen. A Gazeta in the Classroom got the cooks from the schools reached in 2012, in Linhares, to take part of the workshops.

This meeting’s objective was to stimulate monitors to pay attention to their health, specially on the importance of exercising, avoiding stress and making regular exams. It was an entire day with activities such as:

-  Labour gymnastics with a SESI Physical Education teacher.

-  Talking to a doctor about importance of changing habits to have a healthy life.

-  Health Circuit – measuring of glucose, blood pressure, heart beat, weight X height and abdominal circumference. Also a quick interview. A teacher and her students of Nursing Course, from Univix University at Vitória, performed it.

-  Study of the 2nd Workshop, named “Move Yourself!”, to be done with teachers participant of A Gazeta in the Classroom.

“Vargem Alta public schools adopted a healthier feeding. After discussions about it at A Gazeta in the Classroom’s workshops it was forbidden, in all of them, the selling of some products like industrialized popcorn and potato chips. It has provoked a change not only in children but also in their families because parents notice that, if the school cannot sell these kinds of food, certainly there must be something damaging in them. This way, families change their feeding habits too.”

Nova Venécia* - 150 participants

* Nova Venécia is a municipality that, in the past, was partner of A Gazeta in the Classroom. They heard about the work we were performing in 2012 and got Brazil Kitchen’s contact with a monitor from a municipality that was our partner.

2 - Healthy Life – Teachers Maria da Penha Pinto and Raquel Fraga, from Vitória, accompained their students having lunch at school. They presented tv news “Medidinha Certa”, from Fantástico broadcast (Rede Globo), about children overweight. Then, they asked their students if their feeding habits were similar or different from those children. Next step was a research for children to do with their parents, about healthy habits at home. After discussing the results, they ellaborated with each student a personal menu based on food pyramid and on a research about the amount of calories each of them could have daily, according to doctor’s recommendations, taking into consideration their weight, height and age (a scale and a meter were used). Food labels were checked to verify nutritional value, ingredients, etc. A supermarket was opened in the classroom, “selling” healthy food. To finish the project, the class had a healthy picnic.

3 – Move yourself: pesticide is a dangerous product – Teacher Geziana Schulz, from Santa Maria de Jetibá

Geziana presented news from A GAZETA, Gazeta Online and radio CBN, about use of pesticides. After discussing them, students read important informations about this issue, from ANVISA (governamental section that regulates the use of pesticides and other substances). Internet videos were also watched. The following step was a research with students’ families, to see what they knew about pesticides and how they used and storaged this kind of product (it’s a rural area and parents’ way of life is agriculture). The information obtained in class was shared with community, during a talk with an IDAF (Forests Institute) expert.

Teachers’ testimony: “Our community needed these informations, because people were using a big quantity of pesticide with no cares on handling it. Community, families and students’ participation was very intense. We achieved very good results.”

Tasting new kinds of food – Teacher Ângela Leonora – Vargem Alta

Students read and discussed news from A GAZETA “Pizza: filling is villain”. They talked about healthy food, studying food pyramid. A research was done to find out if at home and at school they were having healthy food. Then, students produced a text about the importance of the school’s kitchen garden, that allowed them to improve their feeding at school and at home. They enlarged the school’s kitchen garden with new plants. A healthy pizza was prepaired at the end of the project.

Teacher’s testimony: “The theme developed was a success. Students’ families helped enlarge the school’s kitchen garden and sent us the pizza’s ingredients.”

Teachers and students from other two schools (Córrego da Prata and Itaperoroma Baixa) visit. Walk around the school climbing mountains, trees and stones, crossing small rivers, etc. Playing of old games.
