Aims
• Encourage appraisers to re-evaluate and refresh their skills in appraising medical colleagues (from a range of specialties):
• in the light of feedback they receive on the course
and
• their experience of observing other appraisers

• Confirm that appraisers are appraising at an appropriate level and, if not, address concerns
• Consider what further changes to appraisal may be required as a result of revalidation requirements

Three Roles for a challenging appraisal
• Appraiser – begin by exploring the job the appraisee does and then move into issues flagged up in the Scenario
• Appraisee – (The tutor) will try to respond naturally to the Appraiser’s interventions
• Observer – What works well? What could be done differently?
Reviewing the video
• Anyone can ask for the video to be stopped at significant points
• Explain why you have stopped the video
• Encourage the appraiser to think about what was going through their minds before they made interventions
• Give examples of what could be done differently if suggesting a change, or specify what was done well
