STAFF NEWS CONGRATULATIONS TO JULIET VICKERS At the end of last term we were able to celebrate our school mission statement which reminds us of the NZ curriculum vision of us all as life long learners. Our special congratulations to Juliet who graduated with a Mindlab post graduate diploma. Siobhan also holds this very valuable qualification.

GOODBYE HANNAH At the end of the month we farewell our wonderful teacher aide Hannah O’Connor who is heading to the UK for her OE. While Hannah will be so dearly missed, we are excited for her as she heads off on explorations and adventures.

SPEAKING OF ADVENTURE Clare Rose our fabulous office wizz was missing in action for a number of weeks last term as she and her friend walked a total of 340kms on the Camino in Spain. Clare endured blizzards, rain, hail, and snow and has many stories to tell. She will also never

complain about how hot the office is again.

FOCUS ON LEARNING- The Creative Learner

This year our curriculum and our board goals are focusing on the creative learner. Please find the Creative Learner Profile which we are pleased to share with you. At our student conferences, we trust that children will be able to refer to their goals and successes in this key area of a holistic curriculum. Performers in school Friday May 18

Linking nicely into our school inquiry Te Maunga, Kahurangi Māori performing group will visit us with their show Taonga. This talented troupe will entertain and engage our learners with stories about taonga (treasures) of the Māori people e.g mountains, rivers, pounamu (greenstone), tribal areas and canoes.

Please pay $4.00 per child to the office, classroom teacher or on Kindo before May 17. Mandarin Teacher Hosting You might remember Shaobo, our teacher from China that we hosted in Term 3 last year. We have been approached by AFS as they have a number of Mandarin teachers keen to travel to New Zealand from 28 July to the 25 August 2018. They are based in a host school. The teachers engage with students in the classroom and learn about the New Zealand school system and how our classrooms work. They are also able to teach some of their own specialties like song, dance, paper cutting or even cooking. While the teachers are here they stay with a local host family where they take part in the family's activities and learn about the kiwi lifestyle. The host family get the opportunity to learn about another culture without having to leave home! The host family is paid $75 per week while the teacher is in their home. Please email Charlaine Spencer [email protected] LANGUAGE NESTS For the last three years we have run very successful language nests. These language nests have been run voluntarily by dedicated parents. This year we would like to run Thai, German, Samoan, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Spanish and Indian Subcontinent language nests. If you speak another language and would like to help out with a language nest please let Charlaine know [email protected] . We are open to families suggesting other language nests for their first language. We would like to get these sessions up and running on Wednesday 9 May.
