Background

According to RCW 43.372, Marine Planning Law –

Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) is a public process of analyzing and allocating the spatial and temporal distribution of human activities in marine environments to achieve ecological, economic, and social objectives.

Coordinating decisions –

NON-regulatoryMulti-use

Uses spatial data – often displayed as

maps

Proactive

Scope of MSP

INTENT: Address location of potential

new marine uses.

PLAN GOALS/OBJECTIVES:• Protect existing uses• Protect cultural uses/resources• Preserve environment• Integrate decision-making• Provide new economic

opportunities

NON-REGULATORY PLAN

The study area is 700 fathoms offshore and includes federal waters and estuaries.

Value in the Data Network

8

• Mapping activities in Washington’s marine waters

• Connecting through a consistent framework

• Developing an interagency network

• Better baseline information for the coast

• Easier to connect to the framework

• Easier to connect to the interagency network
