Through some 1500 years of its recorded history, and certainly for longer than that, Korea has
been developing its own culture virtually unnoticed by the rest of the world. It has always itself
been observant of other cultures, of China for nearly two millennia and of the West for some two
centuries. It has also maintained a modesty about its own achievements which may have been very
proper in terms of Korean cultural values, but which has left the rest of the world the poorer in

its ignorance of Korea's culture.
Koreans have been too successful in their modesty, and national pride alone on the part of
Koreans cannot now do anything to remedy this failure of success. That pride needs to be supported
by scholarship, by hard and long research into the exact nature of Korean culture...

Beyond the cradle of Western civilization lie East, South and Southeast Asia, the worlds of
Chinese, Japanese, Indian and other Asian civilizations, with an extremely rich and varied human
experience accumulated over many centuries and of most relevance to modern man. Little of this
experience finds its way into the ordinary school curriculum. The Department of Asian Studies is
dedicated to filling this very serious gap in the Western educational system, by bringing to students
an awareness of the cultures of Asia and by stimulating in many of them a desire to study more
extensively and in depth the languages and civilizations of Asia. (7)
