and powerful, and calls mankind to obedience

Presenter– A Christian who wants to share his understanding of

basic Bible teaching, convinced that God’s Word provides fundamental certainty and clarity and hope to a world that desperately needs such a message

Approach & Material– Discuss each subject area in order via presentation

format, allowing for a 40-minute Q/A session at end – Workbooks contain a copy of the presentation slides,

reference material, & note sheets for the Q/A session

Objectives Rightly show the information (2Tim 2:14)

– my aim is to present core Scripture truths aptly, accurately, fairly and boldly

Let the text do the convicting (Heb 4:12)– the written Word, when read and studied with a humble heart,

has God’s transforming power

Urge your personal search (Acts 17:11)– you need to be convinced by your own study and self-

examination, so check everything out

Give glory to God (Mark 2:12)– God is pleased when His Truth is proclaimed, and delighted

when His Word takes root in a human life

Page 5: 1 Lesson 1. 2 Topic Outline Introduction Objectives Assumptions Framework (A Jesus-centered Viewpoint ) Resurrected [1] Application to Us

5

AssumptionsScripture is the only authoritative source – anything

else is man’s work – Bible text takes priority over church authority or religious tradition

or the writing of men (2Thes 2:13)

Our English translations are sufficiently accurate – they are a reliable source– different translations bring their own strengths and weaknesses;

thus no single translation should be given pre-eminence; all translations (as distinct from paraphrases) can contribute to understanding

Reasoning and pondering are required – and thinking must be logical and consistent– Making sense is expected (e.g., Is 1:18,43:9, 1Cor 11:14)

• in fact Christ has been raised (1Cor 15:20)• impossible for Death to hold him (Acts 2:24)• first principle teaching (1Cor 15:1-4)• fulfilled promises to the fathers (Acts 13:33)• set us free from the law of sin and death (Rom

8:2, 6:22)• given a name above every name (Phil 2:9)• Jesus is the resurrection & the life (John 11:25)• the Christian hope (Acts 24:15, 26:6-8, Rom 8:24)

9

But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep

1Corinthinans 15:20Res-2

Points:1. Stated to be a FACT!

Application:1. A resurrected Jesus is the pivotal point of Bible Christianity2. We expect to be among those raised “at his coming” (15:23)

2. “first fruits” = initial, primary, the best; given as an offering to God (cf. Gen 49:3, Ex 23:16,19, Lev 23:10,17,19)3. “fallen asleep” = died (in the hope of the resurrection)

Page 10: 1 Lesson 1. 2 Topic Outline Introduction Objectives Assumptions Framework (A Jesus-centered Viewpoint ) Resurrected [1] Application to Us

10

But God raised him up, having loosed the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it.

Acts 2:24Res-3

Points:

2. Law of sin and death: the soul that sins shall die (Ezek 18:4,20)

Application:For we know that Christ being raised from the dead will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him…So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus(Rom 6:9,11).

3. Jesus did not sin (Heb 4:15) yet he died (Jn 19:30, 33); since he wasn’t like Rom5:12 men, some further action had to happen

4. Man + sin = death; man Jesus + sinless = death + resurrection

1. Simple but key teaching: God raised Jesus, who was dead.

Page 11: 1 Lesson 1. 2 Topic Outline Introduction Objectives Assumptions Framework (A Jesus-centered Viewpoint ) Resurrected [1] Application to Us

11

Now I would remind you, brethren, in what terms I preached to you the gospel, which you received, in which you stand, by which you are saved, if you hold it fast--unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures…

1Corinthians 15:1-4Res-4

Points:1. “first importance” = primary, fundamental priority teaching

2. “in accordance” {twice} = fulfilled Bible prophecy, down to the detail of “the third day” (cf. Jonah 1:17, Matt 12:40)

Application:Our salvation depends on a crucified and risen Jesus (1Cor 15:17)

Page 12: 1 Lesson 1. 2 Topic Outline Introduction Objectives Assumptions Framework (A Jesus-centered Viewpoint ) Resurrected [1] Application to Us

12

Acts 13:33Res-5

Points:1. Another fulfilled prophecy regarding Jesus’ resurrection

Application:Those who have the faith of Abraham are “fully convinced that Godwill do what he has promised” (Rom 4:21), namely raising them to eternal life to enjoy the promised earth (Gal 3:29, Heb 11:13-16)

2. “to the fathers” = reference to Abraham and David (cf. Matt 1:1)

3. God’s promise to Abraham about a “seed” or offspring dealt specifically with resurrection (Gen 22:18, Gal 3:18, Heb 11:19); David also foresaw the resurrection (2Sam 7:12-19, Acts 2:31)

And we bring you the good news that what God promised to the fathers, this he has fulfilled to us their children by raising Jesus…

Page 13: 1 Lesson 1. 2 Topic Outline Introduction Objectives Assumptions Framework (A Jesus-centered Viewpoint ) Resurrected [1] Application to Us

13

Romans 8:2, 6:22Res-6

Points:1. “law of sin and death” = sinners must die (see earlier slide)

Application:Contrast the outcome of Christ’s obedience vs. the sin of Adam: “If, because of one man's trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.” (Rom 5:17)

2. When believers obey the gospel call and standard of teaching in Christ, they are “set free from sin” to serve God (Rom 6:17-18)

For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set me free from the law of sin and death … But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the return you get is sanctification and its end, eternal life.

3. Jesus also redeemed Jewish believers from “the curse of the law” of Moses, for sanctification (Gal 3:10-14, Heb 9:13-15, 10:1-14)

Page 14: 1 Lesson 1. 2 Topic Outline Introduction Objectives Assumptions Framework (A Jesus-centered Viewpoint ) Resurrected [1] Application to Us

14

Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name,…

Philippians 2:9Res-7

Points:1. Context: “became obedient unto death … on a cross” (v.8)

Application:1. A disciple is expected to “bear his own cross” (Lk 16:27)2. Those who faithfully follow will share the suffering & glory, knowing the power of the resurrection (Phil 3:7-11)

2. Because of Jesus’ humble mindset and taking on a servant’s role, God exalted the name of Jesus, e.g., called: Son, King of kings

3. Such exaltation occurred in conjunction with his resurrection

Page 15: 1 Lesson 1. 2 Topic Outline Introduction Objectives Assumptions Framework (A Jesus-centered Viewpoint ) Resurrected [1] Application to Us

15

Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live…

John 11:25Res-8

Points:1. This said before Jesus himself died and was raised by God

Application:1. Both the just & unjust are resurrected (Acts 24:15, Dan 12:2)2. Only the faithful are given eternal life (Matt 25:48)

2. Jesus thus had total confidence in his Father (cf John 10:18) = he had faith that God would make him alive again (cf. us!)

3. “and the life” indicates immortality distinct from resurrection

Page 16: 1 Lesson 1. 2 Topic Outline Introduction Objectives Assumptions Framework (A Jesus-centered Viewpoint ) Resurrected [1] Application to Us

16

Res-9

Points:1. “hope in God” = “hope in promise” = “hope to attain”2. hope of resurrection was key to the faith of Abraham and David, “fathers” of Israel (Heb 11:9, John 8:56, Acts 2:25-35)

Acts 24:15, 26:6-8

Application:As it was for Abraham, “it will be reckoned to us who believe inhim that raised from the dead Jesus our Lord” (Rom 4:24,11-12)

…having a hope in God which these themselves accept, that there will be a resurrection of both the just and the unjust….

And now I stand here on trial for hope in the promise made by God to our fathers, to which our twelve tribes hope to attain, as they earnestly worship night and day. And for this hope I am accused by Jews, O king! Why is it thought incredible by any of you that God raises the dead?

Page 17: 1 Lesson 1. 2 Topic Outline Introduction Objectives Assumptions Framework (A Jesus-centered Viewpoint ) Resurrected [1] Application to Us

17

Acts 28:20, Romans 8:24Res-10

Points:

1. “the hope of Israel” = hope of the resurrection (Acts 26:6)

Application:1. The Christian hope is eternal life on a new earth, with Jesus2. That hope becomes reality only at Christ’s return, not before

2. Paul’s preaching integrated the gospel of the Kingdom of God with the fact of the resurrected Jesus (Acts 28:23,31)3. “this hope” = belief in risen Lord has past and future aspects

For this reason therefore I have asked to see you and speak with you, since it is because of the hope of Israel that I am bound with this chain

…as we wait for the adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. For in this hope we were saved.

But God raised him up, having loosed the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it. (Acts 2:24); This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. (Acts 2:32)

be it known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by him this man is standing before you well. (Acts 4:10)

The God of our fathers raised Jesus whom you killed by hanging him on a tree. (Acts 5:30)

but God raised him on the third day and made him manifest; (Acts 10:40)

But God raised him from the dead; (Acts 13:30); but he whom God raised up saw no corruption.(Acts 13:37)

because, if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. (Rom10:9)

And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power. (1Cor 6:14)

Paul an apostle--not from men nor through man, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead-- (Gal 1:1)

and you were buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead. (Col 2:12)

Law of sin and death:• For in the day that you eat it [a sin before God], you shall die (Gen 2:17)• The soul [person] that sins shall die (Ezek 18:4,20)• Therefore as sin came into the world through one man and death through

sin, and so death spread to all men because all men sinned – (Rom 5:12)• The wages of sin is death (Rom 6:23)• For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set me free from the law

of sin and death (Rom 8:12)• The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law (1Cor 15:56)• Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin; and sin when it is

full-grown brings forth death (James 1:15).

Impossible for Jesus to be held by death

Man + sin = death [simple ‘formula’ to illustrate this law]

Jesus + sinless = death [inconsistent/illogical]Jesus + sinless = death + resurrection

Adam vs. Jesus (Romans 5)

Supplemental Reference Material #3

Through Adam:• sin came into the world …and death through sin,

• death reigned…over (all men)• many died through one man's trespass• one trespass brought condemnation• by one man's disobedience …many were made sinners, …• Law came in …sin increased, …• sin reigned in death, ….

Through Jesus:• took away the sin of the world…

• grace also might reign through righteousness to eternal life

• grace abounded all the more,

• so by one man's obedience many will be made righteous

• one man's act of righteousness leads to acquittal & life for all men

• those who receive… the free gift of righteousness, will reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ

• abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel (Jn 1:29, 2Tim 1:10)

7 But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ.8 Indeed I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as refuse, in order that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own, based on law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith;10 that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death,11 that if possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.

10 For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, "Cursed be every one who does not abide by all things written in the book of the law, and do them." 11 Now it is evident that no man is justified before God by the law; for "He who through faith is righteous shall live"; 12 but the law does not rest on faith, for "He who does them shall live by them." 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us--for it is written, "Cursed be every one who hangs on a tree" -- 14 that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. (Galatians 3)

Set free from Law of Moses

13 For if the sprinkling of defiled persons with the blood of goats and bulls and with the ashes of a heifer sanctifies for the purification of the flesh, 14 how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify your conscience from dead works to serve the living God. 15 Therefore he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, since a death has occurred which redeems them from the transgressions under the first covenant. (Hebrews 9)

25 And he said to them, "O foolish men, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?" 27 And beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. (Luke 24)

44 Then he said to them, "These are my words which I spoke to you, while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and the prophets and the psalms must be fulfilled." 45 Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures, 46 and said to them, "Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead… (Luke 24)

39 But he answered them, "An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign; but no sign shall be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the whale, so will the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. (Matthew 12)

15 And the angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time from heaven, 16 and said, "By myself I have sworn, says the LORD, because you have done this, and have not withheld your son, your only son, 17 I will indeed bless you, and I will multiply your descendants as the stars of heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore. And your descendants [seed] shall possess the gate of their [his] enemies, 18 and by your descendants shall all the nations of the earth bless themselves, because you have obeyed my voice." (Genesis 22)

Abraham understood the resurrection

Supplemental Reference Material #8

17 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was ready to offer up his only son, 18 of whom it was said, "Through Isaac shall your descendants be named." 19 He considered that God was able to raise men even from the dead; hence, figuratively speaking, he did receive him back. (Hebrews 11)

8 And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, "In you shall all the nations be blessed.“ …14 that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles… 16 Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring. It does not say, "And to offsprings," referring to many; but, referring to one, "And to your offspring," which is Christ. (Galatians 3) cf. Rev 1:18, 3:7

Page 33: 1 Lesson 1. 2 Topic Outline Introduction Objectives Assumptions Framework (A Jesus-centered Viewpoint ) Resurrected [1] Application to Us

12 When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come forth from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom for ever. 14 I will be his father, and he shall be my son. When he commits iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men; 15 but I will not take my steadfast love from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away from before you. 16 And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure for ever before me; your throne shall be established for ever.'" 17 In accordance with all these words, and in accordance with all this vision, Nathan spoke to David. 18 Then King David went in and sat before the LORD, and said, "Who am I, O Lord GOD, and what is my house, that thou hast brought me thus far? 19 And yet this was a small thing in thy eyes, O Lord GOD; thou hast spoken also of thy servant's house for a great while to come, and hast shown me future generations, O Lord GOD! (2Samuel 7)

David Foresaw the Resurrection

Supplemental Reference Material #9

30 Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants upon his throne, 31 he [David] foresaw and spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. 32 This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. (Acts 2)

6 Thus Abraham "believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness." 7 So you see that it is men of faith who are the sons of Abraham. 8 And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, "In you shall all the nations be blessed." 9 So then, those who are men of faith are blessed with Abraham who had faith.…14 that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith… 26 for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to promise (Galatians 3)

13 These all died in faith, not having received what was promised, but having seen it and greeted it from afar, and having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth. 14 For people who speak thus make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. 15 If they had been thinking of that land from which they had gone out, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city. (Hebrews 11) cf. Rev 21:2,3,10

Eternal Life – what & when

Supplemental Reference Material #11

21 For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will… 24 Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears my word and believes him who sent me, has eternal life; he does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. 25 "Truly, truly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live… 28 Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29 and come forth, those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of judgment. (John 5) cf. Dan 12:2

Eternal Life

Immortality – cannot die(Gk. Athanasia)

Incorruptible – cannot sin(Gk. Aphthartos)

A believer has assurance of ‘eternal life’ per God’s promise (e.g. 1Jn 5:13), but will not actually obtain the spiritual body until after the resurrection/judgment (cf. 1Cor 15:51-53)
