2 Types of Bariatric Surgery: 1) Laparoscopic Banding Surgery 2) Gastric Bypass Surgery and Gastric Sleeve

Bariatric Surgery

Laparoscopic Banding Criteria: -Age of 16 to 75 -BMI > 35 or BMI of 30-35 with 1 comorbidity Mechanism of weight loss: -RESTRICTIVE Benefits: -Less invasive -Weight loss 15-20% -Lower risk of complications -Few nutritional deficiencies Risks: -Death (1/2000) -Erosion of the band into stomach -Slippage of band out of place Disadvantages: -Less overall weight loss compared to gastric bypass -Frequent adjustments needed Cost: -Not covered by OHIP—patient pays $16-18,000 How to be Referred: -No referral needed. Patient can self refer to a centre of choice, or the WMC MD can send a referral to a surgical centre.

Gastric Bypass Surgery And Gastric Sleeve Wait time to surgery is 1 –2 years Criteria: -Age of <70 depending on health -BMI > 40 or BMI of 35-40 with 2 comorbidities (diabetes, heart disease, sleep apnea or high blood pressure not controlled on 2 medications) -Smoke free for 6 months Mechanism of weight loss: -RESTRICTIVE -MALABSORPTIVE Benefits: -Weight loss 30-35% -Improvement in metabolic disorders such as diabetes Risks: -Death (1 in 500), major complications (20 in 200), minor complications (26 in 200) -Increased risk of infections, leakage and ulcers -Nutritional deficiencies (avoided with proper use of supplements lifelong) Cost: -$20,000 -Covered by OHIP (patient does not pay) How to be Referred: -Referral by a MD is required. Referral is sent to the Bariatric Registry. A Surgical Centre will contact you directly. You will get an orientation and medical clearance testing to determine if you are an appropriate candidate for surgery.

Successful Bariatric Surgery Patients -Are educated about the risks and benefits of the surgery -Decrease their liver size prior to surgery as a result of weight loss -Are involved in regular medical follow up in a medical weight management clinic -Are exercising prior to surgery and after surgery
