There are about 375 million people who speak English as their first language. English today is

probably the third largest language by number of native speakers, after Mandarin Chinese and

Spanish. However, when combining native and non-native speakers it is probably the most commonly

spoken language in the world. There are over 215 million speakers of English as a first language

in the United States, 58 million in the United Kingdom, 18 million in Canada, 15 and a half million

in Australia and around 4 million in each of Nigeria, Ireland, South Africa and New Zealand.

Carlos and Montse are in Brighton. They are there to learn English. Brighton is a popular seaside

resort in the UK where thousands of students study English every year.

Carlos is a university student in Spain and English is vital for his studies. "My English is OK now,”

he says. “I practise every day and that's really important. I’ve got a good teacher and she motivates

me a lot. I also watch films in English and listen to English music. It's hard work but it’s good fun.”

Montse is from Barcelona and she is a sales manager in a large multinational company. She uses

English at work. “English is really important for my job. I speak it a lot but now I need to pass the

First Certificate exam. It's a company requirement.”

There are of course hundreds of thousands of people learning English as a foreign language. So

it is not surprising that there are tens of thousands of language schools all over the world. It's big

business. But there are also places that offer English from the comfort of your own home, via the

internet.

Juan is a taxi driver from Madrid and he learns English from home. "I've got a computer and a

good internet connection. There are thousands of sites and lots of resources for me on the net. I

use www.learnenglish.de. It's got a lot of really good resources. They've got dictionaries and

grammars and there are places to practise vocabulary. It's got a great chat room too to practise

speaking. There are a lot of people on line. I've got friends from all over the world. Some are from

the States."

Nowadays there's no excuse not to learn English properly!

Reading strategy: Read the text first quickly to get the general idea. This is called skimming.

When you skim, do not read every word of the text. Let your eye move quickly and pick out the

words you recognise.
