What is Brunnel

Brunnel is the database representation of a construction used to ensure a direct passage of a transportation element (Road Elements, Ferry Connections, Water Elements and Railways) over another transportation element, over a cavity or under the earth surface.
BRidges + tUNNELs = Brunnel
One Brunnel represents one construction in reality
Brunnel is a Point Feature, Line Feature or Area Feature.
Brunnel can have a Standard Name (unique value) and multiple Alternate Names.
Brunnel Type is mandatory & unique attribute of Brunnel

Brunnel-Grade Separations
General term for all constructions which form a grade separation e.g. in the following situations:
• where a road crosses a railway
• where a road crosses a river or canal
• where a road, railway or waterway goes through a mountain, under or over an estuary, a valley, etc.
• where a road crosses another road
• where a railway crosses a waterway

Capturing Guidelines

IF the relevant transportation elements (Road Elements, Ferry Connections, Water Elements and Railways) are represented
No Brunnel to be captured for Grade Separated Crossings related to roads in parking buildings
Brunnel Type shall be captured for each captured Brunnel.
Standard Name shall be captured for the most common name of each captured Brunnel.

Roundabout Brunnel - A construction, which incorporates a complete roundabout, shall be represented by more than one Brunnel, each
composed out of (adjacent) edges.
Forked Brunnel - A bridge or tunnel construction that contains a three or more valent Junction, will be represented by more than one Brunnel, each composed out of (adjacent) edges

Adjacent Components
- If a Brunnel is composed out of more than one edge or face, then those components shall always be adjacent.
- Brunnels, composed out of edges, can cross or be adjacent, but shall not share common edges.
- Brunnels shall only share common faces, in case the Brunnels cross.
