    Brianna Powell (pictured) often helps

her mom, Michele Powell, at the GilmerCounty Farmers Market, brightening the Bobbis Bees table with her

cheerful disposition and bright smile. Bobbis Bees offers a wide variety

of items, from pure honey to soap made with bee products. One

particularly interesting item is the propolis soap. Propolis is the resin

produced by bees to protect their hives from parasites and bacteria. As

such, propolis has been studied for its medicinal properties and has been

found to provide antibacterial and antifungal protection as well as relief

from minor burns and skin inflammation. As gardeners, we are often

digging in the soil, exposing our skin to any number of unsavory

microbes and stinging insectsjust the sorts of things a good scrubbingwith propolis soap may help us combat. Why not give it a try.

    Farmers Market Helps Send

    Tuba Player to Austria

    Butterfly Corner

    Fresh Picks / V2N4 pag

Vendors and patrons alike love to eat lunch at the

Farmers Market, and the menu is always a

surprise, which makes the experience all the more

fun. Getting together with friends to catch up on

the weeks happenings, greeting folks we havent

seen in too long, and simply relaxing at a shady

picnic table are reasons enough to visit the market

around lunchtimethe food is just incidental. For

a couple of weeks in June, GSC music major

Brittany Lott provided lunch in the form of hot

dogs, beans and weenies, and cornbreadall to

raise money to pay the $1,900 she needed for a

plane ticket to Austria, where GSCs Tuba and

Euphonia Ensemble, led by Professor Lloyd Bone, was invited to perform at an international conference

June 23-30. In addition to selling lunch, Lott sold copies of Kermit the Frogs bookIts Not Easy Being

    Green. In addition, several market

    patrons donated something extra to

help Lott on her European journey.

Im very proud of you, said Judy

    Meads. And Im very grateful,

said Lott. Thanks to everyonewho helped Brittany Lott

    make it to Austria!

The Master Gardeners have continued to add plants to the butterfly

garden at the entrance to the Farmers Market parking area. Donna

Vavrek (left) planted a purple butterfly bush as the gardens

centerpiece. Red bee balm (center) was in bloom, drawing one of

the gardens first visitors, a common yellow cloud butterfly.

Remember us when you clean out your beds this fall; donations

of your excess perennials would be most welcome!

    Im one a them hippies

    who moved to West

Virginia in the 70s, had akid, built a house, worked a

    team of Percherons . . .

    hitchhiked and drove all

    over the U.S. and Canada.

    So says Eugene Brezas

    Facebook profile, swiped

    from the Internet to introduce

    one of the Gilmer County

    Farmers Markets most

    interesting vendors.

    A leathercraftsman,

    Eugene made his first

    pair of moccasins as a

    Boy Scout back in his

    home state of Pennsyl-

    vania. He moved to Wes

    Virginia in 1974 and got

    more serious about

leather crafting when hebought a pair of horses

    and needed to fix their

    harnesses.

In 1983, Breza started a business

    rebuilding saddles, but today his

craftsmanship extends to the creation of belts,

wallets, keyrings, and many other colorful and unique

items. Brezas Tanner Leather Works, located in the unincorporated

community of Tanner, West Virginia, also provides handcrafted items

for Mountain Made, anartisan market place devoted

    exclusively to West Virginia

arts and crafts. And Breza has

    been president of the Central

    Appalachian Arts and Crafts

    Cooperative, which has kept

    him very busy for many

    years. The Farmers Market

    welcomes Breza as a vendor!
