Session Goals

Discuss and explore how technology can be used to achieve specific learner outcomes in the Social Studies Program of Studies.

Reflect on current practice, as well as new strategies and information.

6

Technology and the Affective Domain

Children naturally gravitate towards technology.

Children are “digital natives” and we are the “digital immigrants” (Thornburg, 2003).

Interest and motivation has been linked. Technology can create situational interest (Bergin, 1999).

Page 6: 1 Integrating Technology in the New Social Studies Program of Studies Edmonton Regional Learning Consortium

7

Technology to Support Inquiry

Specialized and large quantities of information available can prompt inquiry.

Current events access makes inquiry even more relevant.

Availability of digital images is increasing. Multiple perspectives are readily available.

The Infusion of Technology inthe New Social Studies Program of Studies

Technology encompasses the processes, tools and techniques that alter human activity. Information communication technology provides a vehicle for communicating, representing, inquiring, making decisions and solving problems. It involves the processes, tools and techniques for:

– gathering and identifying information– re-representations of dominant texts– expressing and creating– classifying and organizing– analyzing and evaluating– speculating and predicting.

Selected curriculum outcomes from Alberta Learning’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Program of Studies are infused throughout the social studies program of studies and are indicated in the guide with an arrow-shaped symbol similar to the bullets on these slides

Program of Studies Exploration

1. Find a partner who teaches at your grade level(s).

2. Together, read and highlight the technology outcomes that are marked with an arrow for your particular grade level(s).

3. As you read with your partner complete a PMI chart. What are the positives, minuses and interesting things you see in the technology outcomes?

Learner Outcome Lenses

As we work through different technology-related activities and resources, be looking at them through the “lenses” of the specific learner outcomes for your grade level.

Let’s Share

What is one idea for an activity or resource that you could use to help students with a specific learner outcome for Social Studies?

What resource did you find the most useful for your grade level?

Using Digital Images to Promote Inquiry

Many of today’s students are very visually oriented.

Images can be a springboard to inquiryA Process to Analyze Images:

Click to find: http://www.canadianheritage.org/reproductions/20781.htm

1. Observing – Study the image. Form an overall impression, then examine individual items.

2. Inferencing – Based on what you have observed, list things you might infer from this image.

3. Questioning – What questions does this image raise in your mind? Where could you find answers to them?

Example of Using Digital Images to Promote Inquiry, Social Studies Gr. 2

2.2.7 In what ways has our community changed over time (e.g.,

changes in transportation, land use)? (CC, TCC) What has caused changes in their community? (CC, TCC) How has the population of their community changed over time

(e.g., ethnic mix, age, occupations)? (CC, LPP, TCC)

1. Teacher selects pictures from a website or website that show different time periods.

2. Students work together to place them in chronological order.

Page 16: 1 Integrating Technology in the New Social Studies Program of Studies Edmonton Regional Learning Consortium

17

Example of Using Digital Images to Promote Inquiry

3. Students develop a hypothesis about the approximate dates of the photographs.

Sample question prompts:– How do you know which picture is the oldest?

Most recent?– How did you arrive at a date? What were your

clues?– Pick one picture. How do you think your life

would have been different if you had been alive at this time?

Page 17: 1 Integrating Technology in the New Social Studies Program of Studies Edmonton Regional Learning Consortium

18

Example of Using Digital Images to Promote Inquiry

4. As a class, discuss findings

5. Have students discover and discuss the exact dates of the pictures and how their hypotheses compared.

Page 18: 1 Integrating Technology in the New Social Studies Program of Studies Edmonton Regional Learning Consortium

19

Using Digital Video

Let’s view a video clip at http://www.histori.ca/minutes/minute.do?id=10184

1. View first, without sound - discuss or write about what you notice.

2. Watch again with only sound - write about what else you notice.

3. Finally, watch with both video and sound.

4. How might this strategy be used for viewing videos in Social Studies?

Page 19: 1 Integrating Technology in the New Social Studies Program of Studies Edmonton Regional Learning Consortium

20

Let’s Explore and Plan

1. Work with one or two people who are working at the same grade level(s).

2. Explore the digital images used in: Online Guide to Implementation other sites listed in your handout Any others you find.

3. Consider program of studies outcomes, brainstorm some ideas for incorporating the images on the sites to promote inquiry and meet outcomes.

4. Choose a recorder and reporter to share ideas with the large group.

Information Overload!

To help students become critical consumers of massive amounts of information, consider lessons such as these to critically evaluate information:

22

Finding information

Need to help students understand how to use information without copying.

Important to model how to cut and paste from a web site (no whole sentences….ever!) to another tool (e.g. word processor, note pad, other software).

25

Citing Sources

Important to talk to young kids about intellectual property – http://www.cyberbee.com/

Simple citations should begin as soon as students begin using external information in their work.

Consider citation generators for older students: http://www.oslis.k12.or.us/elementary, http://citationmachine.net/, www.easybib.com

Page 25: 1 Integrating Technology in the New Social Studies Program of Studies Edmonton Regional Learning Consortium

26

Exploration Time

1. Take a few minutes to explore resources on note-taking, graphic organizers and copyright information.

2. Work with a partner, and be ready to share one thing that you found particularly interesting.

Page 26: 1 Integrating Technology in the New Social Studies Program of Studies Edmonton Regional Learning Consortium

27

WebQuests

Inquiry-oriented activity that uses resources on the internet.

Effective for teaching controversial issues. Contains series of tasks organized in a particular

structure. WebQuests often use group activities, which fits well

into outcome 2.S.5 and 3.S.5- share information collected from electronic sources to add to a group task.

Inquiry-based, often multi-disciplinary.

Special Considerations for Younger Students

To support reading, consider:– Pairing stronger readers with students who may need

some support.– Heterogeneous group work with defined roles.– Text-to-Speech Support – Universal Reader

33

Special Considerations for Younger Students

To support online activities, consider:

– Doing the first few WebQuests as a class so students can understand structure.

– Using older students to help facilitate group work.– Spending time working on cooperative learning

techniques and group roles.

Working with one or two people at your grade level, use the resources you’ve explored to create a lesson.

Choose a specific learner outcome (or outcomes) and a technology outcome (or outcomes) from the Social Studies Program of studies.

Create a lesson that uses technology to achieve a specific learner outcome.

Be prepared to share your lesson. Lesson plan examples:
