Holy Spirit Baptism
“I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire” (Matt. 3:11)
2
In This Lesson We Want to Answer
• The “WHO” of Spirit baptism– Who gets it– Who gives it
• The “WHEN” of Spirit baptism• The “WHY” of Spirit baptism• The “WHAT” of Spirit baptism
TO KNOW THE TRUTH, WE MUST USE THE BIBLE ALONE!
4
“Filled With The Spirit” VS“Baptized With The Spirit”
• Not equivalent expressions– When some see “filled with the
Spirit,” they equate it to mean “baptized in the Spirit”
– One may be filled with the Spirit after being Spirit baptized
– One may be filled with the Spirit without being baptized in the Spirit
5
“Filled With The Spirit” VS“Baptized With The Spirit”
• Some who were “filled with the Spirit” but not “baptized with the Spirit”– John the baptizer from womb (Lk.
1:13-15)– Elizabeth (Lk. 1:41)– Zecharias (Lk. 1:67)YET THE ADULT JOHN SPOKE OF HOLY SPIRIT BAPTISM AS SOMETHING IN THE FUTURE (LK. 3:16)
6
WHAT IS SPIRIT BAPTISM?
1) WAS FIGURATIVE– “for John truly baptized with water,
but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now“ (ACTS 1:5; cf. 2:1-4)
7
FIGURATIVE BAPTISM
• WHY DO WE KNOW IT IS?– SPIRIT IS A PERSON
• “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you” (JN. 14:26; cf. HEB. 1:3)
– A PERSON IS NOT LITERALLY POURED OUT (ACTS 2:17, NOTE “OF”)
HE
8
FIGURATIVE BAPTISM
• FIGURES ARE TO BE UNDERSTOOD BY THEIR LITERAL MEANING– I.E., JESUS IS THE DOOR (JN. 10:9); VINE
(JN. 15:5)– JESUS IS THE DOOR BUT IS “THE DOOR”
JESUS?• HE IS ‘THE DOOR’ IN THAT HE IS ‘THE WAY’
OR ‘ENTRANCE’• HE IS ‘THE VINE’ IN THAT HE NOURISHES THE
BRANCHES (CHRISTIANS)
9
FIGURATIVE BAPTISM
• SPIRIT BAPTISM WAS TO BE UNDERSTOOD BY LITERAL BAPTISM (I.E, JOHN’S)– JOHN’S WAS AN OVERWHELMING OF
WATER– THE OTHER OF THE SPIRIT’S POWER
10
WHAT IS SPIRIT BAPTISM?
1) WAS FIGURATIVE2) WAS A PROMISE
– PROMISED BY PROPHETS (JOEL 2:28-32)
– PROMISED BY JOHN (MATT. 3:11; LK. 7:28)
– PROMISED BY JESUS (ACTS 1:4, 5)
11
PROMISES
• ARE NOT OBEYED. . . BUT ENJOYED– GOD NOWHERE COMMANDS MAN TO BE
HOLY SPIRIT BAPTIZED• THEREFORE THERE ARE NO MEN WHO CAN
ADMINISTER IT (JN. 1:33, 34; LK. 3:16; ACTS 2:32, 33)
• NO MAN CAN “OBEY” IT
– GOD DOES COMMAND WATER BAPTISM• THEREFORE MAN CAN ADMINISTER IT• MAN CAN OBEY IT
12
ACTS 10
47 "Can anyone forbid water, that these should not be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?"48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then they asked him to stay a few days.

13
FACTS TO OBSERVE FROM ACTS 10
• HOLY SPIRIT BAPTISM DIDN’T NEGATE ONE’S RESPONSIBILITY TO BE BAPTIZED WITH WATER
• HOLY SPIRIT BAPTISM DID NOT OCCUR IN WATER BAPTISM
• HOLY SPIRIT BAPTISM DIDN’T HAPPEN AFTER THEY ACCEPTED THE FULL GOSPEL MESSAGE (NOTE: “AS I BEGAN TO SPEAK” ACTS 11:15)
• HOLY SPIRIT BAPTISM DIDN’T SAVE ANYONE FROM THEIR SINS
14
WHY DID PETER COMMAND THEM TO BE BAPTIZED IN WATER?
• BECAUSE, “He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned” (MK. 16:16)
• BECAUSE, “And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him”
(HEB. 5:9)
15
SO. . .
• “WHO” ADMINISTERS H.S. BAPTISM?– JESUS ALONE
• “WHO” GETS H.S. BAPTISM?– ONLY OCCURRED TWICE IN FIRST
CENTURY (ACTS 2; ACTS 10)– ACTS 11:15 “And as I began to speak,
the Holy Spirit fell upon them [GENTILES, sjw], as upon us at the beginning.”WHEN? LUKE 24:47

– Samaritans were never baptized with the Spirit
17
Acts 8
14 Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them,15 who, when they had come down, prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit.16 For as yet He had fallen upon none of them. They had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.17 Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.

BAPTISM “IN THE NAME OF THE LORD JESUS” IS WATER BAPTISM. . .
“47 Can anyone forbid water, that these should not be baptized. . .48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord” (ACTS 10:47, 48)
19
7 IRREFUTABLE FACTS FROM THE CASE OF THE SAMARITANS
1. SAMARIA WAS RECEPTIVE TO PHILIP’S PREACHING (8:6, 14)
2. PHILIP COULD WORK MIRACLES (8:6, 7)3. PHILIP COULD NOT IMPART THE ABILITY TO
WORK MIRACLES4. PHILIP COULD NOT BAPTIZE WITH THE HOLY
SPIRIT5. THE APOSTLES COULD NOT BAPTIZE WITH
THE HOLY SPIRIT – ONLY LAY HANDS (8:15)6. THE SAMARITANS WERE ONLY BAPTIZED IN
WATER. . .NEVER WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT7. THE APOSTLES LAID HANDS UPON SOME AND
THEY RECEIVED THE HOLY SPIRIT
20
SO. . .
• “WHEN” DID HOLY SPIRIT BAPTISM OCCUR?– ONLY IN THE FIRST CENTURY UPON A
SELECT FEW
21
SO. . .
• “WHY” WERE SOME BAPTIZED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT– TO GIVE THEM POWER (ACTS 1:8)– TO SHOW THAT GOD HAD GRANTED THE
GENTILES REPENTANCE TO LIFE (ACTS 11:17, 18)
• “WHAT” WAS SPIRIT BAPTISM?– A FIGURATIVE BAPTISM OF THE SPIRIT’S
POWER
22
FALSE ASSERTIONS
1. HOLY SPIRIT BAPTISM HAPPENS AT THE MOMENT OF FAITH
– NEVER HAPPENED TO THE SAMARITANS WHEN THEY “BELIEVED” AND WERE “BAPTIZED” (ACTS 8:12)
23
FALSE ASSERTIONS
2. PAUL HAD TO BE BAPTIZED WITH THE SPIRIT TO BE AN APOSTLE– WAS NEVER A REQUIREMENT TO BE
AN APOSTLE– THE APOSTLES WERE “APOSTLES”
PRIOR TO H.S. BAPTISM (ACTS 1:2, 20)
– CORNELIUS WAS H.S. BAPTIZED WITHOUT EVER BEING AN APOSTLE
24
FALSE ASSERTIONS
– REQUIREMENTS FOR AN APOSTLE WERE: • TO HAVE SEEN THE RISEN CHRIST• TO HAVE BEEN SELECTED BY
CHRIST (ACTS 1:22, 24, PR. 16:33; ACTS 9:15; 1 COR. 9:1; 15:8)
25
FALSE ASSERTIONS
3. IF “BORN OF THE WATER” MEANS BAPTIZED WITH WATER, WHY DOESN’T “BORN OF THE SPIRIT” MEAN BAPTIZED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT?
– WATER BAPTISM IS “ONE BAPTISM” (EPH. 4:5)
– WATER BAPTISM CONSISTS OF BEING BORN OF “WATER AND OF THE SPIRIT”
