Windows 7 Known Issues

Solution: This is often because IE8 is sharing session cookies across browser windows. This behavior is by-design for IE8 and is intended to make session handling more consistent. Previously, some entry points would create a new session (e.g. clicking a desktop icon) while others did not (e.g. File > New Window).

Now in IE8, new sessions are created explicitly, by clicking File > New Session, or by starting iexplore.exe with the -nomerge command line parameter.

a. To create a new session (that will not share session cookies with other open browser windows), select File > New Session. If you are unable to view the menu toolbar, press “alt” once. You should now see the menu toolbar and be able to select File > New Session.

b. With the second option of the -nomerge command line parameter, there are two ways:a. In the Target field, enter the -nomerge option at the end of the string

"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -nomergeb. If you have a URL in the string, you need to put the -nomerge option before the URL.

"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -nomerge https://apps.uillinois.edu/banner

c. If you have done both of the above, you will need to clear the cookies and temporary internet files in your browser, close your browser, reopen, and try again.

5. Banner Compatibility

5.1 Banner Closes UnexpectedlyProblem: Some users have reported that Banner will randomly close after being logged in for a long period of time. The issue here is that Internet Explorer is ‘timing out’ the Banner web page.

Solution: In order to fix this, you must set a registry entry that extends the IE timeout. Contact the Service Desk with any questions related to this issue.

***Important: Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, be sure that you are familiar with the impact of your registry modification and that you back up the registry before making changes.

5.2 Banner Buttons/Icons not AppearingProblem: When launching Banner, certain icons and buttons do not appear. Those who launch Banner from Workflow, specifically, cannot submit or approve payroll adjustments.

Solution: Please see Item 10. Java Security Issues for resolution. Changing your Java security settings, as explained in Item 10, will bring back any missing Banner buttons.

5.3 Banner menu no longer fits screenProblem: User just received new upgrade to Windows 7. Pre-Windows 7 upgrade when user would maximize my Banner screen, the display would fill in with no extra surrounding space. Now the font is small and the menu appears with white space surrounding it.

Solution: This problem can be resolved by reducing default Windows 7 resolution. Default for Windows 7 as deployed by AITS is 1280 X 1024. Reduce screen resolution to recommended Banner screen resolution of 1024 X 768.

1. Open Screen Resolution by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, and then, under Appearance and Personalization, clicking Adjust screen resolution.

2. Click the drop-down list next to Resolution, move the slider to the resolution you want (1024 X 768), and then click Apply > OK. If you have multiple monitors, do the same for each monitor.

Banner menu will now fill in screen and fonts will appear larger.
