The mission of the BHS Foundation is to support the BHS by engaging with our community in

funding innovative and unique academic and enrichment initiatives that continue our tradition of providing

the best in public school education.

The vision of the BHSF is to engage our students with innovative academic and enrichment opportu-

nities, to empower our educators to provide unique educational activities and programs, and to enhance our

community by investing in our students, our schools and our future.

The Bloomfield Hills Schools (BHS) Foundation is committed to inspir-

ing our students to achieve academic excellence by supporting innova-

tive teaching and learning initiatives. We partner with teachers, students,

staff, alumni, business leaders and community members to identify and

fund exceptional programs that make a difference for our students and

our community. This year, our collaboration resulted in the establish-

ment of a mini-grant program to fund projects that further student en-

gagement and success. We are committed to continuing this program,

building upon its inaugural success.

The BHS Foundation believes that there is no better investment or responsibility

than providing our children with an exceptional educational experience. Additional-

ly, we feel that benefit of our support extends beyond our students and teachers and

strengthens our entire community.

The BHS Foundation relaunched in February and immediately funded almost

$17,000 in grants. These grants reach into classrooms at every school and advance

the curriculum with innovative ideas. We also conducted a successful Founders

fundraising campaign which raised approximately $88,000 in donation and pledges.

This money will be used to fund future grants and other outstanding programs for

our children.

Please take a moment to review this report and join us in celebrating the many successes that you have helped

make possible. We thank you for your support and hope that you will continue to work with us to enhance the

excellent educational programs that we have come to expect from the Bloomfield Hills Schools.

In early 2014, the BHSF Board of Directors reignited its efforts after a period of inactivity during the high

school consolidation process. It revisited its mission, vision and organizational structure, secured an execu-

tive director, and identified three primary goals that support its purpose of inspiring creative learning ap-

proaches for our children:

1) In February, the BHS Foundation launched a mini -grant program

to fund innovative ideas that engage our students in areas such as academics, arts and athletics, extra -

curricular activities and community connection. These grants give educators the opportunity to enhance

learning and student success through the use of new techniques, projects and tools. BHS educators can

apply for grants for a single classroom, grade or school. In its first call for grants, the Foundation re-

ceived 35 applications requesting more than $100,000. It awarded 17 grants totaling $16,779 and an-

ticipates awarding approximately $20,000 during the fall 2014 grant program. The Foundation aspires

to satisfy 100% of its grant requests as it continues to grow.

2) In order to make a difference for our students, the Foundation

recognizes the need for strong community support. The Foundation has shared its goals and vision at

numerous district and community events to include meetings of BHS PTOs, district administrators and

staff, the Community Partnership Committee, the Birmingham Bloomfield Chamber of Commerce, lo-

cal philanthropists, and local businesses. The Foundation has also introduced itself in a letter to alum-

ni and retired BHS staff.

The Foundation has featured its inaugural mini -grant programs in many local media publications as

well as on Bloomfield Community Television. We provide up -to-date information on our website and

Facebook page and share information on the district’s website and Facebook pages. Our initiatives have

been posted on various Twitter accounts and blogs, including Conant teacher, Marnie Diem’s blog,

tweetwrite.blogspot.com/2014/02/starting-with-scratch.html

3) In an effort to support our students and educators and offer greater grant opportu-

nities, the Foundation reached out through a Founders Campaign. Our community responded with

overwhelming support. The program secured $81,842 in donations and pledges by June 30, 2014, and

has subsequently received an additional $5,862 in contributions. Donations can made online on our

website, by phone or by mail. Contributors may also dedicate their gift to an individual or group.

The BHS Foundation grants have al-

lowed us to think about expanding in-

novative ways of learning that are not

always possible with the annual budg-

et. It allows teachers to be innovators

beyond typical budget constraints and

students to be a part of that journey.

The BHS Foundation enhances the education of our BHS students through its mini -grant program.

District educators are empowered to achieve greater student success by incorporating innovative

learning approaches and education tools into the curriculum. Educators have two opportunities each

school year to apply for a grant. The Foundation’s board evaluates and awards grants based on an anal-

ysis of each proposal and the amount of available funding. Mini -grants are made possible through the

generous contributions of our donors.

Message from the Board of Directors:

One of our first goals in restarting the Founda-

tion has been to invest in an solid infrastructure

that will advance our mission. In our efforts to

do so, we recognize that we have spent more

than we have given away. As we move forward,

our business plan calls for our management ex-

pense/giving ratio steadily to improve. Our ulti-

mate goal is to elevate our efficiency to be con-

sistent with the most efficient charities, spend-

ing roughly 75% or more on programs and ser-

vices and 25% or less on administrative fees.

A complete list of grants is included on our website.
