We will analyze motion, graphically and in reference to the following concepts: distance and displacement, speed and velocity, acceleration, jerk?

Scalar quantities are measurements that do NOT have a direction associated with them.

Vector quantities are measures with directions.

Distance - measured in metres and is the change in position of an object without using direction. It is a scalar.

Displacement is the change in position of an object using direction. It is a vector.

To describe the motion of an object, we must specify the location of the object at all times.In one dimensional motion, an object moves either East­West or North­South...but in a straight line.Ex: a car drives along a straight road.

At time zero, it is at a position di, the position of the car from some chosen origin.At a later time, the car is at a position df.

The change in position of the car is denoted as Δd.

If the car travelled a total of 23.0 m from time 0, then the change in position is 23.0 m ­ 0 = 23.0 m.The distance travelled is 23.0 m, the displacement travelled is 23.0 m [E].

Note: displacement is a vector but distance is a scalar!! (Sometimes they are similar.)

Displacement: the vector whose magnitude is the shortest distance between the initial and final positions of the motion and whose direction points from the initial to the final position.

Standard unit: metres (m).
