1. What is nurture?Nurture is widely spoken about, but rarely done .

Discipleship as motivating others to serve God, and with a need to develop disciplined Christian leadership for shepherding communities that can withstand moral oppressive and economic havoc from the contemporary society.

Nurture as the way children are treated as they grow as compared with the characteristics they are born with.

Mentoring as with helping, advising or teaching people to do their job.

A good mentor listens to the stories, and hopes for the future

“A good mentor knows about the life and family of the person cared for. She holds a mirror before that person to extend their self awareness, helping to observe their growth and acknowledge the changes.” Daloz

Mentors offer hope, a place of hospitality, a safe shelter, where accumulated knowledge and fears can be unpacked..

cares for you at a close friend level, and supports you at a sacrificial level, offering spiritual guidance.

Is it more of how can I help than what should I teach ?

Nurturers believe in others, value their contribution, model what it means to be a servant,

allow others to walk with them, meeting great leaders, always listens, encourages, allowing them to excel, challenging and

seeking their best.

Jesus called the 12 in Mark 3:13-14, • To be with them.• To send them to spread the gospel• To continue ministry when He physically left

them.

1.Jesus spent enough time with them.2.He prepared them for the mission ahead of them. 3.He modelled his servant-hood lifestyle.

Being with Jesus helped the 12 to • Learn how to witness • How to participate in his distinctive ministry .• Grow deeper in their relationship!!

John 21: 15ff Jesus calls us to feed His lambs and take care of the sheep.

– Christian headteachers have biblical mandate to reach children teachers too. Matt 28:19ff (this is what it means (all nations)

– God’s purpose for the world is structured round the ministry of Multiplication to children and adults.

– God calls us to train children so that they will not depart from the truth. Prov 22:6

– Israel is called to teach the Law of Moses to the children Deut 6:4ff

• Nothing of praise worthy should be hidden from the children . PS 78:1-4, Mat 18:1-6

Paul’s model -a mentor to follow1. Became imitators of us and of Christ”. 1Thes.1:6; 2:1-14 2. His boldness for Christ vs 23. His humility. vs 6 as Christ Phil 2:1,4. Paul worked hard in order to make himself a model for

them to follow .vs 9. 5. His gentleness and care , vs 76. He shared the gospel and his life as an example vs 87. Shared a holy life among them vs 10.8. Enduring suffering as he, imitating his life vs 14 9. He is love vs 8. Jesus demands love John 21: 15 do you

love me.

The 21st century Uganda has over 3 million young people growing up fatherless/ motherless

The emotional effects on such children are

– “Almost half the children of divorce enter adulthood worried, angry, under achieving, self belittling”

– Sexual abuse prints a permanent trauma on the child till death.

• What do we expect from them?

We trusted you to live healthy lives, before our conception; you abused yourself with abnormal sex and drugs.

We trusted you for nourishment, you fed us with contamination.

We trusted you to keep our bodies pure, you made us addicts of drugs.

We trusted you for safety, you inflicted war, abduction, abuse and hunger.

We trusted you with our education; our schools fall apart in your face.

We trusted you with our future, you gave us AIDS, can we last?

We trusted you with love and affection, you abandoned us on the streets.

We trusted you for our moral guidance, you set a pathetic example.

We trusted you with our spiritual being, you never even mention Jesus.

We trusted you to keep our eyes pure, you make sexy and violent films

We trusted you to keep our ears pure, you swear and blaspheme in our face.

We trusted you with our mental welfare; you screwed up our minds with your double standards.

We trusted you on building relationship, you lock us up, and abandon us.

We trusted you to tell us the truth, you fed us on lies.

We trusted you for family, which family?- family gone, it is no more.We trusted you with our innocence, you abused our bodies

We trusted you with our adolescence; you encourage contraceptives and safe sex - what safe?

We trusted you for what is wrong and right, you mock what is right and defend what is wrong.

We trusted you with our whole future, what future? Future! We trusted you.

A mentor provides a model to follow. “Modelling is the greatest form of unconscious learning.”
