ABOVE LEFT: Senior catcher Jake Ortega was one of Cal State Bakersfield’s top hitters all season, batting .331 with one home runs and 23 RBIs. He was also a perfect 13 for 13 on stolen bases for the Roadrunners, who were 21-32 overall and 9-15 in the Western Athletic Conference heading into the final week of the regular season. ABOVE RIGHT: Junior third baseman Tyler Jorgensen leads CSUB with a .333 batting average and tied with Jesse Rowley (not pictured) for the team lead with 29 RBIs for the ’Runners, who are currently tied for the sixth and final position to qualify for the WAC tournament, which is scheduled to start May 22 in Mesa, Ariz.

Junior pitchers Darius Vines, left, and Edgar Barclay, right, are a combined 11-6 this season. Barclay and Vines are also 1-2 in strikeouts in WAC play. Barclay (6-3) has 104 in 80.1 innings pitched this season, while Vines (5-3) has 92 in 68.2 innings. Barclay, who has a 3.14 ERA, allowed just two hits and struck out 12 in a victory over Rio Grande Valley last weekend. It was the sixth time in 12 starts this season that he’s recorded double-digits in strikeouts. Vines also notched a victory last weekend in a 7-2 win over UTRGV, striking out 10 in six innings.

SOFTBALLLEFT: Junior shortstop Cydney Curran earned second-team All-Western Athletic Conference honors after leading CSUB with a .339 batting average .366 on-base percentage and triples. The Roadrunners finished their season 15-32 and 3-15 in WAC play, but battled their play in the conference tournament, falling to third-seeded Grand Canyon 6-4 in Friday’s elimination game.

BOTTOM LEFT: Chris Hipa was the lone Roadrunner to be named to the WAC all-tournament team last weekend. Hipa was 6 for 10 at the plate with a home run in the three games. On the season, the senior led CSUB with seven home runs and was second in RBIs with 19, behind Paige Johnson (not pictured), who had 20.

Sophomore left-hander Daryn Hitzel 5-13 with a 4.21 ERA in 21 starts this season for the Roadrunners, including a victory in the WAC Tournament, limiting UMKC to five hits and one earned run, while striking out four.

TRACK AND F IELDSophomore Corbin Chronister captured the hammer and discus titles at the Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday in Orem, Utah. Chronister won the discus with throw of 178 feet, 17 feet farther then the second-place finisher. He won the hammer throw with a 195-07. The Liberty High graduate qualified to participate in the NCAA West Regional Championships. He also finished sixth in the shot put (49-10.5) to earn second-team all-WAC honors and was named the men’s field outstanding athlete at the event.

LEFT: Freshmen Riley Slayton finished third in the 400-meter hurdles at the WAC championships last weekend, earning all-conference honors, finishing in 1:02.63. ABOVE: Maria LeSure, with the baton, finished fourth in the 100 meters to earn all-WAC honors. The junior from Bakersfield High finished in 12.07.

NOT PICTURED: Other strong performances at the WAC championships, Joselito Flores was seventh in the men’s high jump, freshman JJ Flores was seventh in the 400 and the men’s 4x100 relay finished fourth, despite dropping the baton. The women’s 4x100 relay team ran a season best and finished sixth.

CSUB junior Curt Threlkeld won his second straight Western Athletic Conference championship in the 800 on Saturday. The North High graduate recorded a time of 1:48.89, finishing more than five seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. The time qualified him for the NCAA West Regional Championships.

ABOVE: Sophomore Antonia Beason finished sixth in the high jump at the WAC championships, clearing 5-4.25.

RIGHT: Senior Tim Van Horn placed fourth in the men’s high jump at the WAC championships, qualifying for the NCAA West Regional Championships after clearing 6-8.75. It was Van Horn’s fourth all-conference award and will be his second trip to the regionals.

He won the 50 and 100 butterfly at the National Invitation Championships. Gillilan also teamed with Kris Rogic, Jake Chir and Ryan Brimer to swim the fastest 400 medley relay in CSUB history.
