    Week 1: Chapters 1-6

    1. Why is the name Camp Green Lake a strange name? Describe where it is located .

    There is no lake there and its not green because it is a desert. Its very hot. (pp3-4)

    2. What are three dangerous animals that live in the area? Which one is the mostdangerous? Rattlesnakes, scorpions and the yellow spotted lizard. YSL will kill you. (p4)

    3. Who goes to Camp Green Lake? What do they do there? Why?

    Boys who have gotten in trouble with the law. They dig holes. They will become

    better boys. (p5)

    4. Why does Stanley choose Camp Green Lake? What do you think he expected when he

    heard the name?

    He has never been to camp because he is from a poor family. He was expecting a fun

    summer camp. (p5,7)

    5. Describe Stanley.

    He is overweight, bullied, no friends. Even the teachers were mean to him. (p7)

    6. Why is Stanleys family unlucky? How long have they been unlucky? Does this discourage

    Stanleys father?

    Stanleys great great grandfather stole a pig from a gypsy and she put a curse on the family.

    4 generations. His father is always optimistic. (pp7-8)

    7. What happened to the first Stanley Yelnats?

    He became rich in the stockmarket but then had been robbed by Kate Barlow, the famous

    kissing bandit, who stole all his money. She didn't kiss him, but if she had she would have

    killed him. (pp9-10)

    8. What is the invention that Stanleys father is working on?

    A way to recycle old sneakers. (p9)

    9. Who is Mr. Sir? Describe him.

    He is one of the counselors. He eats sunflower seeds because he has stopped smoking. He is

    not very nice. (p12-13)

    10. What will Stanley do every day?

    He will dig one hole five feet deep and five feet wide every day, including weekends. (p13)

    11. Why doesnt Mr. Sir need to use his gun to keep the boys from running away?

    There is no water for one hundred miles in any direction, so no one can leave. (p15)

    13. Who is Mom? What does this nickname tell you about him? Describe him and his

    attitude about the boys. Mr. Pendanski.

    He is kinder looking, he seems to care about the boys. He knows that the boys are not bad

    but that they have made bad choices (p16-19)

    14. What nicknames do the boys have? Why wont Mr. Pendanski use their nicknames?

    Who is the only boy whose nickname is always used?

    Lewis = Barfbag, Alan = squid, Rex = X-Ray, Jose= Magnet, Theodore =Armpit, Ricky =

    ZigzagZero is the only boy who is called by his nickname all the time. (pp17-19)

    14. What does Stanley tell the other boys about why he is at Camp Green Lake? Who did the

    sneakers belong to and why were they so important to the homeless shelter?

    He told them that he stole some shoes that belonged to a famous baseball player, Clyde

    Sweet Feet Livingston. The homeless shelter was going to auction them off to raise

    money. (pp22 23)

    15. Explain what happened to Stanley the day the sneakers were stolen. How did he get to

    be in the wrong place at the wrong time? How did he get the sneakers? Why did he keep

    them? What happened after he got the sneakers?

    He was bullied by Derrick Dunne who took his notebook and threw it in the toilet. Because

    of this Stanley had to walk home after missing his bus. The sneakers hit him on the head

    when he was walking from under a bridge. He thought his father could use them and he

    was excited to show his father, so he started running. The police stopped him because he

    looked suspicious and was arrested because the homeless shelter had called the police.

    16. Why did Stanleys trial get delayed?

    Livingstons baseball schedule wouldnt allow him to come to court to testify. (p25)
