SCHOOL CALENDARYear 7 City Camp
Last Thursday evening I met up for dinner with the second group of students and a new group of staff who were on the Year 7 City Camp. Similar to last week, the students reported having had a great time. They were impressed with “The Big Issue”, the Arts Centre and the Sustainability Walk. By the time I arrived to meet the group at the restaurant, they were tired and hungry and it was great to see them really enjoy the food. The evening finished with a visit to the Eureka Skydeck, which the students were all looking forward to.
Once again, I thank all our staff for their willingness to take time out of their own lives to support this exceptional experience for our students. A special mention of the Junior School Team under the leadership of Mrs Melissa Hughes for all of their work in the organisation and running of the camps. I look forward to the third and final Camp this coming Thursday.
Student Exchange Organisations approved by the VRQA and therefore DET
The following is a 2018 update of the Student Exchange organisations approved by the VRQA to provide student exchange programs in Victoria. The list changes each year so it is important that you check the current list rather than relying on old information.
Each year we are asked about student exchange programs that provide a reciprocal benefit. It is important that if you wish to engage in reciprocal exchange that you utilise the services of one of the organisations on this list. The school will not be able to enrol overseas exchange students coming through organisations not on this list because they would not be approved by the Department of Education and Training. If you need further information, please do not hesitate to call Kate Scalzo on 94305111 or e-mail [email protected]

Term 3 Working Bee
Our next Working Bee will take place this coming Sunday, 19 August. I extend a personal invitation to all members of our community and friends to join me on Sunday for the Working Bee. This is a day of fun as well as a day of work. It is great to see the community come together with the common goal of improving and maintaining our school grounds so we have a very pleasant place to work and learn in. I acknowledge the work of the Grounds Committee in its planning and preparation for the day. This means that when we arrive we can immediately start the work without wasting any time. At the end of the day, it is great to see what we have achieved together.
Please join us even if you only have one or two hours to spare. The day usually begins at 9:00am and finishes at 12:00pm with a barbeque lunch. A delicious morning tea is presented to the workers in mid-morning. I look forward to seeing you all there.

SMS Alerts to Parents
From the beginning of Term 3, all Victorian Government schools must contact parents/carers as soon as practicable on the same-day of an unexplained student absence.
More information on this policy can be found on the Department’s website and the Eltham High School Attendance Policy can be found on our school website.
We will be utilising the Compass Attendance SMS feature to alert parents/guardians in two ways:
1. You will receive an sms at approximately 10:00am indicating if your child has not arrived at school. This sms will contain a one time link to approve the absence.
2. You will receive an sms at approximately 3:30pm if your child has not been present for any class or activity during the day, which has not already been approved. This will give you a summary of the attendance for the day and will also include a one time link to approve any absences.
As this is a new process for our school an email account [email protected] is available for any feedback or comments.
2018 Parent Opinion Survey - We want our parents to tell us what they think!
Our school is conducting a survey to find out what parents think of our school. The Parent Opinion Survey is an annual survey offered by the Department of Education and Training that is conducted amongst a sample of randomly selected parents. It is designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of parents’ perceptions of school climate, student behaviour and student engagement. Our school will use the survey results to help inform and direct future school planning and improvement strategies.
Approximately 30 percent of parents will be invited to participate in this year’s survey. All responses to the survey are anonymous. This year the Parent Opinion Survey will be conducted from Monday 23 July to Sunday 26 August. The survey will be conducted online, only takes 10 - 15 minutes to complete, and can be accessed at any convenient time within the fieldwork period on desktop computers, laptops, tablets or smartphones. The online survey will be available in a range of languages other than English.
DARREN SQUIRES, Assistant Principal
PARENTS AND CAREERS In 2003 the Eltham High School community came together to form a cooperative to help fund extensions to the music block. This was at a time when governments would work to a strict formula of entitlements, rather than looking at a school’s particular needs.
The band room and practice rooms were inadequate for our various bands and ensembles. There was an urgent meed to extend these to ensure that the bands could continue their fantasic programs.
Parents, staff and freinds of Eltham High School came together to form the cooperative to help fund those very important works.
We are pleased to inform shareholders and the Eltham High School community that the last payment of our loan has been made. As a consequence the cooperative is now being wound up. For shareholders this means that shares are canceled and no liability remains.
The directors wish to thank the many shareholders for being part of what was a very important building project at the school. Also thanks to the various administrative staff, most recently Kathleen Hannan, for providing support to our operations.

JUNIOR SCHOOL Camp 1 Report
“Throughout camp our focus was on the three pillars of sustainability. Although we were still learning about these pillars in school, new information on sustainability was included into our activities in ways to create more interest. We spent the entire day walking and taking trams to each location in the CBD. After the last activity we were exhausted! Then we could relax and take the train home.
The Big Issue workshop was really interesting as we learned about how the Big Issue is helping to eradicate homelessness and how we can make a difference, even as students. We also listened to the moving story of Shane, a man who was homeless for a number of years, how he coped with living on the streets and how the Big Issue supported him, helping him get back on his feet.
The Art Gallery was very interesting as not only were we learning about the different art pieces we were also learning their meaning, the cultural aspect of the building and its art, and the sustainability within its walls. A piece I really enjoyed was ‘The Pioneer’ by Fredrick McCubbin as it was interesting to look at how the landscape and people changed as a whole through one piece of art.
The sustainability walk was tiring but it was worth it! We learned so much that could be used for our Acting Green Project and life in general. We learned about the sustainability of the entire CBD and there was way more sustainability around than I originally thought! But there were still the cons of each sustainability measure, like the fact that the litter traps sometimes accidentally trap animals if they are not careful (and inevitably these animals are killed).
The Immigration Museum was mostly focused on social sustainability. Something that was enjoyable was learning about and dressing up as different immigrants from the past. This was quite informative as we got to learn about why people had to leave their home country.
The MCG was interesting to learn the history of the sports and the infrastructure of the building. A tour of the grounds was really insightful as we got an inside perspective of different sportsmen and teams who had visited the MCG at different times in history. The MCG was actually quite surprising and I didn’t realise how sustainable it actually was.
At night we went up to the 88th floor of the Eureka Tower, I only stayed up for 2 minutes just for my own wellbeing! But I’ve heard that it was really fun and beautiful looking over the city.
I loved going to the Queen Victoria Market as we got to buy lots of delicious food. I was really excited as I got to buy some Polish kabana from my favourite shop, the Polish Deli. I also bought a plum jam donut and a borek (not borax!) from different stalls/shops. Many people also stocked up on lollies from the lolly shop and snacked on them until they got home. Surprisingly, I bought a red belt for $20 which was pretty good as it was good quality leather, YAY.
Overall our first camp of high school was a great learning experience for all of the students. I think we all feel more educated after this experience!”

STUDENT GROWTH AND LEADERSHIP Young Endeavour Youth Scheme
Are you 16 – 23 years old and looking for a new challenge? Join STS (Sail Training Ship) Young Endeavour for an 11 day voyage you’ll never forget! Voyages are open to young Australians and you don’t need any sailing experience! The scheme is operated by the Australian Navy. Recently two Eltham High School students, Paige Mihaljevic (Year 11, Stewart House) and Lillian Lingman (Stewart House class of 2017), just returned from their experience. Come and listen to the stories and what it was like. Sign up interest with Mr Torey at [email protected]
The Young Endeavour Youth Scheme is a not for profit organisation which provides young Australians with a unique, challenging and inspirational experience at sea. Voyages increase self awareness, develop teamwork and leadership skills and create a strong sense of community responsibility amongst members of the youth crew.
Test yourself as you learn to set sails, navigate the sea and climb the mast. Develop your confidence, teamwork and communication skills. Make new friends and memories as you explore the amazing beaches and islands off the Australian coast.
Paige and Lillian learnt how to sail the Young Endeavour with a team of peers, led by experienced sailors, over an 11 day journey. They saw this opportunity as a pathway that added to their leadership capacity.
