    1. 1 Chinese New YearChinese New Year is the most important festival for Chinese people all over the world. It is also calledthe Spring Festival or the Lunar New Year. The exact date of the Spring Festival on the esterncalendar changes from !ear to !ear. "owever# Chinese New Year ta$es place %etween &anuar! 1 andFe%ruar! 1'. (n the Chinese calendar ever! !ear has an animal)s name. These animals are the rat# ox#tiger# ra%%it# dragon# sna$e# horse# ram# m# rooster# dog and pig. * Chinese legend sa!s that thesetwelve animals had a race. The first !ear was named after the rat# the winner. The other eleven !earswere named according to the order in which the animals arrived in the race. The clever rat +umped ontothe ox)s %ac$# and then at the end +umped over the ox)s head to arrive first, The Chinese %elieve that aperson %orn in a particular !ear has some of the characteristics of that animal.

    was a cafK and a %alcon! where visitors could stand and en+o! the view. It was magnificent !oucould see the whole cit!# the river and the hills %e!ond. (n their wa! %ac$ from the Tower# 0iana and:eter went past the main s>uare in the cit! centre. The! stopped at a stall to have some orange +uice#and sat and watched the traffic for a while. The s>uare was ver! %us!# with cars# %uses# %ic!cles andpedestrians going in all directions. In the centre of the s>uare there was a policeman controlling thetraffic.
