1. Stay for this pre-lab LECTURE. 2. Go to LAB section you wish to join at its scheduled first meeting.what to doThis Week:All Labs & pre-lab Lectures meet4Next Week:No Labs meet. Friday pre-lab Lecture meets. If you are registered, do not drop yourself. That will be de-register you.4This addresses the students who will try to add or transfer into the course as the lab sections meet. Even though they may not be able to be added, we encourage them to engage in the above activities. If the students ask about the waiting list, tell them that they will be added to the list after they go to Dr. Akhtars office. We will adhere to the 144 students per section rigidly. Please mention that if they are registered and want to change sections, they should NOT DROP themselves on Solar. Akhtar will transfer them. If they drop, they will not be able to re-register and may also be dropped from blackboard.

If students are registered and want to change sections, they must NOT DROP themselves on Solar. They will not ba able to re-register. Akhtar will transfer them.Todays Pre-Lab LectureWheres the action?Whos who? What do you need to buy? What are the course rules? How do you get help? How do we grade? Will you be safe? The Bookstore has high quality (and comfortable) goggles for ~$20. We recommend those if students will take many lab courses. There are cheaper ones (but they must meet ANSI standards). The cheap ones are less comfortable. YES!The rule is: You write down stuff!Notebooks do not need to be neat. Datasheets must have no corrections. 12Students will have to pre-number pages themselves. It is worth mentioning here that reports (in the form of data sheets from the manual) are turned in at the end of the lab. Also mention that in addition to its intrinsic importance, the lab notebook is a way of insuring that we can reconstruct student results in the rare instances when a lab report might get misplaced.Neatness of data sheets will be emphasized by grades. The datasheet is like a publication!Notebooks are reviewed, but not collected. Separate Grades! To be distributed in Lab

14

14It is worth pointing out that since the lab is a separate course, the students receive a separate grade. Its surprising how many of them dont realize this. The students will be given a schedule specific to their lab section IN LAB. They should be encouraged to keep that schedule in their manual. What Contributes to Your Grade?6Preliminary Exercises@553304Test Exercises@1054202Quizzes@ 501001Comprehensive Quiz@ 10010010Lecture Questions@ 55023Total1,000Grading15Given in lab on last day of labGiven in labOn the web Grading BasisAlso in lecture notes15SUSB-001 has all of the course policies. Students are encouraged to read it and be familiar with its provisions. Most of them dont.

Emphasize that Final Quiz is given during class. An earlier versioin of the Final exam schedule showed 133 as having its final during final week. That was and error!GRADING, contd: Preliminary exercises (55): quality of reported observations & analysis (35) neatness of datasheets (5) adherence to safety practices (5) proper use of lab notebooks (5) answers to pre-lab questions (5)

This is also on the Web.Absences and make-up:Unanticipated Absences:

Anticipated absences:

Lectures are given a bum rap *!Im not sure bum rap is a common colloquialism anymore. This tries to justify lectures. Cause and effect notwithstanding, students who attend lectures earn significantly higher grades. As shown on the next slide.

Since 4 are excused, data for fewer than 4 lectures are not shown. Even if we dont invoke cause and effect, the correlation is dramatic.22Reasons to come to Lectures

Lectures are sometimes fun!

Lectures advise you of background, changes in procedures and safety matters. Lecture Questions: Answerable by attending lecturesWhy LecturesLectures dont increase workload

They do not include: background information animations most images They are not a substitute for taking notes during lecture.

Recommend you print lecture notes before attending and annotate them during lecture*.* between facebook and twitter updatesLecture Notes3031Flow charts are intended to help you plan your lab activities by managing your time efficiently.

They usually point out alternate sequences of activities than those shown in the manual.Flow Charts3132Concept maps are a device that can help you evaluate your depth of understanding of what you WILL DO in the laboratory (as well as in other courses).

Concept Maps3233The course syllabus web page includes large numbers of links to supplementary information about the subjects of the exercises.

These links are intended only for students who are particularly interested in certain topics and would like a more detailed description.Supplements on Web3334Videos allow students who have missed some aspect of a lecture to review that segment.

We use Blackboard for:important announcements,Clicker management, and Lecture & Course Grade informationhttp://blackboard.sunysb.edu/Blackboard

40The e-mail address we use to reach you is the one in Blackboard. Make sure it is correct!40Blackboard will be used for general communication with students, including grade information. You will often work in pre-assigned groups. Each partner must assume individual responsibility for what is done.

A common grade is assigned for any common RESULT but not necessarily for overall exercise.

Each submits an INDIVIDUAL REPORT with independent presentations and analyses of the observations.

Grades of team members may differ because of data format, clarity or completeness of report

If in doubt about some aspect of the exercise, repeat measurements or observations yourself!IndependenceTeamwork is essential, it allows you to blame someone else.

4141Since they work in groups, a students grade sometimes depends on data collected by a colleague. The point of the last item is that if they have doubts about the accuracy of data they have not determined themselves, they should repeat the measurement. The labs generally leave enough time for this.

If you are unsure about whether a particular practice is permissible,Honesty is thepolicybest42I make up several versions of quizzes and we use two per section. The questions necessarily tend to be similar from one quiz to the next. If an early section quiz circulates, the later sections can get an unfair advantage.Taking a quiz in a section other than yours means without permission43The substances we use in the course are primarily

Safety

45SafetyStony Brook takes safety very seriously andhas an excellent record.SAFETY = COMMON SENSE2.8 Million people/yr involved in household accidentsPeople dont always exercise common sense

GLASS: Dont cut yourself. Use broom & dustpan available in each lab

HOT OBJECTS: Dont pick them up withbare hands

45The first lab meeting involves a lot of safety information.

Safety

SAFETY DEVICES: TA's will instruct you on the location and use of safety equipment, including: safety showers, eyewash fountains, fire extinguishers, Equipment

46

CLOTHING: No open footwear;

No exposed skin other than arms and head.46REAGENTS: while most are household materials, handle them in accordance with instructions. Take special note of hazard warnings.

EYES:

YOU MUST WEAR SAFETY GOGGLES IN THE LABORATORY AT ALL TIMES!

(State Education Law)

It is your neighbors technique we are concerned with, not yours

As part of next weeks exercise, you will be asked to read and sign a SAFETY AGREEMENT

Eyes

47Bookstore goggles are high quality (comfortable, etc.) but cost ~$20. We recommend these if you will take more labs. If not, cheaper goggles are available, but they must be splash goggles that comply with ANSI Z87.1 47Points will be deducted if students do not wear their goggles at all times. They must be the prescribed goggles. No safety glasses with side shields, etc.The Seawolves Market may have some approved, but better quality, goggles that students who will take a lot of labs may wish to purchase...For all general, all organic/inorganic chemistry instructional labs, all persons in the laboratory must wear5 point penalty for not wearing goggles(20 points if observed by Safety Committee member)

5.4 - Eye Protection It is the responsibility of each instructor to enforce this policy; alternate forms of protection are not permitted. at all times, even when not performing a chemical operation. Xchemical splash goggles, not safety glasses or spectacles,CHP48Chem Dept CHP

QUESTIONS5050The students will probably be walking out of the room before you can show this slide.A group will come up to you with a variety of administrative questions. The best advice is to tellthem to go to the lab where all such questions will be addressed.
