What is Photosynthesis?

Photosynthesis overview• Plants are able to synthesis
glucose by using carbon dioxide gas and water as the raw materials.
• Sunlight is used as the energy to power this transformation
• This chemistry takes place in the chloroplast of the plant cell.
• A special chemical called Chlorophyll makes this possible.
6
Properties of Sunlight• Sunlight is a form of energy• Energy travels in electromagnetic
waves that vary in size• Colors are nothing more then different
size electromagnetic waves.• Objects that exhibit a color have that
color because it is the wave that is reflected.
7
What is a wave?
8
Electromagnet spectrum
9
Light and plants
•Plants don’t really need green light because it’s the light wave that is reflected off the plant
•Colors ( wave lengths) of red, blue, violet are more important to most plants.

11
What traps the light?
•Inside the chloroplast are chlorophylls that are able to trap the energy from the electromagnetic waves.
•This trap energy is used to combine certain elements into a compound
