{ Isaac Barton is probably an ancestor of Anna Joan Buxton } NOTE to READERS :- In the reproduction of this document, I have endeavoured to maintain the structure and format of the author "A. C. BOWERMAN M.B". It was my intention only to clarify the printing that has seen multiple copyings over the years and had become all but impossible to read. Readers I felt would over look important information because of the lack of clarity of the document. It is my hope that this document can now be reintroduced into the main stream of important historical data of which it so richly deserves. And the author be congratulated for his insight in writing his findings so others would know of whence they came. It is my hope that you take pity on this person for some of the mistakes you will encounter within this document, but in argument remember that I copied as close as possible to the original document so some of the spelling was intentional. Yours Truly Lorne Shunk a descendant of Ichabod Bowerman. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE `BOWERMAN' FAMILY of PRINCE EDWARD COUNTY ONT. CANADA. ( 1623 - 1916 )

(1). Bowerman - According to the earliest New England records, the ancestor of the Bowerman family in the Mass. Colony was one Thomas Bowerman who appeared in Plymouth Mass. in the year 1633; and in Barnstable, Cape Codd in 1643 where soon after, he married Hannah Annable daughter of Anthony Annable of the same place. _ In the various records the name is written sometimes - Boman - Borman - Boreman - Bourman - Burman - and Bowerman - ; and is pronounced, as all proper names are liable to be pronounced, according to the caprice of the speaker, either - Bo-man - Bo-erman - Bower-man - (as-in out; Standard Dictionary). The evidence of Robert Kerrick the Devonshire poet, (1591-1674), establishes the local pronunciation in favour of the long -o- as against the --au-in-out- as may be seen in his unflattering epigram upon the Devonshire miller, in which he says.....

`Boreman takes toll; cheats, flatters, lies; yet Boreman', `For all the Devil helps, will be poor man'.

The Canadian branch of the family write the name - Bowerman - but vary in pronunciation, in differently - Bo-erman- with a tendency to ultimate suppression of the long -O-. The name signifies either an Archer or Bowman, or a maker of Bows for Archery, whether written - Boman - or - Bo-erman - and -Bower-man -; and is perhaps derived form calling or occupation of the family during the early history of Whales and the West of England. A Welsh origin of the family is not inconsistent with the evidence of the Devonshire `-Rock-Idol-';, while the armorial bearing rather strengthen the evidence in favour of a military origin of the name.

`Annable'- Anthony Annable was one of the earliest settlers in New Plymouth, having arrived on the ship -Anne-' in 1623. Thus being numbered with the Plymouth`-Forefather-' or -Old Comers-', as they were called who came by either of the first four ships viz, -(1) The Mayflower! (2)`Fortune' (3)`Anne' (4)`The Little James-'. The arrival of the `Anne' in 1623 was six years prior to the transfer of the Charter and residence Gov. of the Colony from London center to the Colony itself- 1629. (Barbers History). Anthony probably first settled at Cape Ann where he drew his Lot of four acres and afterwards resided at New Plymouth where his daughter Hannah was born in 1625. As Hannah was born at New Plymouth in 1625; and as the family, omitting Susannah, were at Cape Codd 22nd. May 1627, the probability is that Susannah was not born until after this date; not is it improbable that the residence at New Plymouth preceded that at Cape ann, although Anthony drew him lot at later place in 1623. According to the records of Pembroke Mass. Anthony Annable had a daughter Susannah who married William Hatch 13th. May 1652. Susannah must have been a daughter of Jane -Anthony's first wife - as the later died in 1643, leaving only nine years between that time and the date of Susannah's marriage. Susannah was probably born at Cape Ann, about 1627 or possibly later as indicated above. In the various records there are discrepancies both in date and incident. Of the ship `Anne', Gov. Winthrop says that she was the sixth to arrive in Plymouth Bay; while Bailies Memoirs states that those who came in the ship `Anne' had their lots portioned to them in 1623, among them being Anthony Annable. Subsequently however Bailie says that Anthony came over on the `Fortune' in 1680; and that he died in 1683. On the other hand the records of New Plymouth omit the name of anthony from among the arrivals of 1621, but include it among those of the `Anne' who drew their lots in 1623. The lot referred to was doubtless that at Cape Ann Settlement, for at the latter plantation a division of cattle was made among the settlers on the 22nd. May 1627; and Anthony Annable and family were numbered in

the 8th. lot of 13 person-who drew to - their united shares-a red heifer and two she goats'. The Annable family at this time consisted of the following members- viz. -

(1) Anthony Annable and his first wife, Jane Annable. (2) Sarah .... (dyed 29th.? June 1674) Hannah ... (mar. Thomas Bowerman - of whom later). Susannah ..( ' William Hatch 17th, may 1652)

On the 9th. June 1630 Anthony Annable sold to Daniel Ray his dwelling house etc. for the sum of L25?.0.0 Sterling : and Baylie says Anthony became a freeman in 1633. The next trace of Anthony we find in the records of New Plymouth where his name occurs as an assistant at Court from Scituate, 15th, Nov 1636.

The Will of Thomas Bowerman (1). is dated 8th. May 1633; but Savage's History states that Thomas died 25th. May 1679. (1) Thomas Bowerman married Hannah Annable in Mar. 1644-45 (See Annable). Freeman's History of Cape Codd gives the following issue - viz- (II). Hannah .....born 1646. (Hannah was Thomas's wife: mar about 1646)

Thomas ..... " 1648. (Of whom later). Samuel ..... " 1651.(killed at Battle of Rehoboth -1676). Desire ..... " 1654. Mary ....... " 1656. Meteable ... " 1658. Tristram ... " 1661.

In 1637 Anthony Annable was elected Constable of Scituate and the General Court for 6th. Mar. 1637 his name appears as a juror. The first Legislative Assembly for the new Colony met in 1639 in General Court with Gov. Bradford as Chief Magistrate; and Gov. Prince as First Assistant. John Alden and Miles Standish; while Anthony Annable and Edward Foster were Deputies representing the town of Scituate. On the 20th. Sept. 1639 Anthony signed his mark to a deed conveying his premises, houses, lands etc. to one Thomas Rawlins of Scituate, for the sum of L79.0.0 English money; and a memorandum by Gov. Bradford dated 9th. June 1642 states that the land thus conveyed by Annable to Rawlins consisted of 100 acres, of which 23 lay to one side containing his dwelling house etc. Anthony Annable's name next occurred as a juror at New Plymouth general court 2nd. Mar. 1640-41; and again on the 1st. Mar. 1641-42, in the 17th year of the reign of Chas.II. From Scituate Anthony Annable probably removed to Barnstable in Cape Cod; for in the list of `Freeman' of the town in 1643 the name of Anthony Annable occurs following that of Thomas Bowerman who some time later married Anthony's daughter Hannah. Considerable discrepancy exists in the various records concerning the precise date of the marriage of Thomas Bowerman and Hannah Annable. The records of New Plymouth state that `Thomas Boreman of Barnstable and Hannah Annable married 3rd. Mar. 1644; while Freeman's History of Cape Cod says .. Thomas Bowerman married Hannah Annable' dau. of Anthony Annable 10th. Mar. 1644-45'. Anthony Annable's wife Jane died about Dec. 1643; and the record of his second marriage is also qualified by chronological discrepancy; as the records of New Plymouth state (1)Anthony Annable and Ann Elcock married 3rd. Mar. 1644 (2) Anthony Annable married Anne Alcock 1st. Mar. 1645'. As already stated Anthony probably removed from Scituate to Barnstable in 1640; and in 1646 he was elected to the

Assembly or Court. from the latter town; and re-elected for the same place during the years 1647 -'51 - '56 and '57. Anthony Annable died in 1673. (Freeman's Hist. Cape Cod); and in 1674 the Court appointed a Mr. Hinckley executor of his estate.

By his second marriage Anthony had the following issue ... viz. (II). Samuel .. born .. 2nd.Jan.1645-46; baptized 8th.Feb. 1645.(Church Register by Dr. Ezra Stiles, Barnstable). (II). Ezekiel.. " (II). Desire .. " early Oct. 1653.

In 1679 the Court orders the division of Samuel's property between his two children - John and Anna - and his widow whose name is not given. Plymouth Col. Rec.' Barnstable - 1st Mar. 1645 Anthony Annable married Anne Alcocke who died and was buried 16th. May. 1651'. Anthony Annable married 3rd Hannah Barker'. Thomas Burman married Hannah Annable 1st. Mar. 1645-46'. Pembroke Mass.Rec.-' William Hatch married Susannah dau. of Anthony Annable 13th, May 1652'. (New Eng.Rec. VolXIX page 220). Dorchester Mass.Rec.- Sarah Annable died 28th.June 1674'.

Barnstable Rec.-' Jane Annable wife of Anthony buried about Dec 1643', Anne Annable (2). wife of Anthony buried 16th.Mar. 1651'. Hannah Annable (3) wife of Anthony buried 16th. Mar. 1657-1658'.

(1). Thomas Bowerman took the oath of a `Freeman' 4th. Mar. 1634-35.(Winthrop), and in the list of `freeman' for Barnstable 1643, occurs the name of Thomas Boreman of Barnstable, followed by that of Anthony Annable; while further the records of New Plymouth state that -Thomas Boreman of Barnstable and Hannah Annable married 3rd. Mar. 1644'. It has been observed that Freeman's Hist. of Cape Cod gives the name of Hannah as the eldest child of Thomas and Hannah- born 1646-; but according to the list births given in the Rec. of New Plymouth', we find the list of this family as foll... (II). Thomas ... born, about the middest 1648. (Of whom later).

Samuel ... " " " end July 1651. Desire ... " " " " May 1654. Mary ..... " the middest Mar. 1656. Mehetable. " the beginning Sept.1658. Tristram . " about " Aug. 1661.

(II). Thomas Bowerman born 1645, is the only member of the family of Ancestor Thomas whose linage has been traced. He was for sometime town-clerk in Barnstable where it is quite probable he was born and where he married Mary Harper, 8th. April 1678.**

(*)- From the Ipswich Antiquarian Papers' July 1882, we learn that David Borman and Hannah Hutcheson married the 12th. April 1662'; hence we see that David is a possible nephew of Thomas, or he belongs to another family of the same phonetic name. (**)-`Harper'-`On the 23rd. April 1658, Christopher Holder and John Copeland having returned to Mass. from Rhode Island contrary to the law forbidding Quakers to enter the Province, they were arrested and marched into Barnstable and severely scourged. Many families of Barnstable vicinity became Friend'; and on the occasion of the arrest and punishment of Holder and Copeland many of their converts followed in the

procession to cheer their brethren in bonds.' The following list contains the names of some of the eighteen families who became `Friends'. viz.- Thomas Ewer; Robert Harper; Joseph Allen; Edward Perry; George Allen; William Gifford; William Newland; Ralph Allen jr.; John Jenkins; Henry Howland; Ralph Allen sr.; Thomas Greenfield; Richard Kirby; William Allen; Daniel Wing; Peter Gannt; Michael Turner; John Newland; Mathew Allen; all of whom in 1658 were fined from ten to one hundred pounds for refusing to take the oath.' Mary Harper who married Thomas Bowerman under circumstances that raise the suspicion that they were married according to the order of `Friends', may not improbably have been a daughter of the above mentioned Robert Harper.

Town of Falmouth Mass. The town of Falmouth contained 28000 acres of assessed land. Isaac Robinson having been dismissed from civil employment in Barnstable or Sandwich, on account of sympathy with Sandwich Quakers, he removed to Falmouth. The first records 29th. Nov. 1661. give the names and location as well as the acres of the first settlers - as foll.-- Isaac Robinson, the first to build a house between Fresh and Salt Ponds, 4 acres by the house, 8 and a half elsewhere. Jonathan Hatch, 10 acres by the house. John Chapman, 4 acres. John Jenkins, 8 acres. Jesse Hamlin, 8 acres. Anthony Annable', 8 acres. William Nelson, 4 acres. Samuel Hinkley, 8 acres. Capt. Nathaniel Thomas, 8 acres. Samuel Fuller, 8 acres. Thomas Lathrop, 8 acres. Peter Blosom, 8 acres. James Cobb, 8 acres. Thomas Ewer, 8 acres. At this time the place was called `Suckannesset', and not until 1694 was it known as Falmouth'. In 1688 Thomas Bowerman had lands laid out to him; and in Mar 1691 the lands of the `Blains' were laid out. John Jenkins was appointed to do the work, and he employed as assistant William Wyatt and Thomas Bowerman. As `Selectmen' since 1700, Thomas Bowerman 4 years.

1760, Stephen Bowerman, 5 years. 1838, Barnabas Bowerman, 12 years.

Town Clerk- Thomas Bowerman, 1703 to 1707.

At a town meeting held 6th. June 1687, land was voted for the help and encouraging the teaching the teaching of the Word of God, which lands among others are west of `Bowerman's Pond', now included in the village. One of the first industries of Falmouth was the manufacture of salt; and Daniel Bowerman is first mentioned in connection with the work. In 1787 Jesse Gifford built a wind-mill at East End for Samuel Bowerman, Joseph Bowerman, and Richard Lake. In 1890 the wind-mill was still doing business. The ownership of this mill passed from Joseph Bowerman to his sons Seth and Thomas; and Thomas tended it 1816. By this time Silas Swift's grandfather had come into the possession of Thomas's share; and Silas Swift's father Moses Swift, had bought Seth's

Page 8: 1 BOWERMAN FAMILY - RootsWebsaylormowbray/Bowerman1916.pdfAfter W. S. Hubbs died, Margaret m- Gilbert Jones. ( Judah had 4 wives) Jane Richmond's brother Sylvester m- Ichabod's dau

share. Thomas Bowerman sold his farm to Capt. Nathaniel Eldred; Seth Bowerman sold his farm, and the two hitched up their oxen, put their families and goods into the carts and started for N.Y. State to settle. Silas F. Swift thus by inheritance and purchase became sole owner, and in 1890 operated the mill. Joseph Bowerman who owned the mill, also owned a tannery which stood east of the small pond across the way from S.F.Swift's residence.

At this early period it is curious to read -`1678 Thomas Bowerman was fined L10.0.0 for marrying himself' but according to all evidence the Bowerman and Harper families were Quakers, this item itself is significant of the aversion in which the Society was universally held.

In 1688 lands were laid out to Thomas Bowerman; and in 1690 all remaining undivided land in that section was ordered to be laid out or surveyed. Thomas Bowerman was one of the two persons appointed to carry the order into execution; and in 1708 Thomas Bowerman with another, was chosen by the Town-Meeting to settle with the dismissed teacher and preacher.

(II).- Thomas Bowerman mar. Mary Harper 9th. April 1678, and had issue as foll-. (III)- Samuel ......(probably born about 1682)

(V) Elihu born Aug, 1757. This note is necessary in establishing the probable date of birth of (IV) Ichabod Bowerman, of whom later.

The Bowerman family of New England was early associated with the Friends or Quakers; but as that Society took rise in england in 1648, first appearing in the Mass. Col. in 1657, it will be readily seen that the ancestor Thomas Bowerman was not a Friend o his advent in Mass. on or before the year 1633, nor even at the time of his marriage with Hannah Annable 1644-46; as the later event itself antedates the rise of the sect by a period of two years. (II). Thomas, (I). Thos.-and Hannah born 1648 probably allied himself with the Friends about the time of his marriage with Mary Harper 9th April 1678.

(IV). Ichabod Bowerman, (III. Thos.).(II. Thos.).(I. Thos.)-

The record of Ichabod, prior to his second marriage is limited to his own testimony, as repeated by his children and corroborated by the records of Stonington Mo. Mtg.(Conn.) These records, since destroyed by fire, attested the double marriage of Ichabod and his daughter Jane, the former to Jane Richmond, and the latter to Jane's brother Sylvester Richmond, Jane and Sylvester were the children of Cyrus Richmond ..(q.v.). Ichabod Bowerman mar first Lydia Mott in Mass where they lived and reared a family of six children, as foll...viz..

(V). Timothy Elizabeth.. (died in tp. Hillier C.W.) now Ontario. David " " " " " Jane " " " " " Hannah Sarah

The sequence of births as given above is according to the list left by (V) Stephen Bowerman from data furnished, later it will be seen that this sequence is not correct. From the records of death in the ones of Elizabeth and David; and the birth of Jane's eldest child, the relative dates of these three is easily established. They are as foll...viz... (V). Jane ......... born.. 1745; as her eldest child was born 6th. Jan.1769, hence

she was married probably about 1768. Elizabeth .... " .. 1748; died in Hillier, Ont. 26th June 1827. aet. 79. Timothy ...... " .. 1750; Hannah ....... " .. 1752; David ........ " .. 1754; " " " " 25th. April 1826. aet 74. Sarah ........ " .. 1750;

As Ichabod was born in 1720-21. and his daughter Jane born about 1745, it is probable that Ichabod was first married about 1744, at the probable age of about 23. His first wife Lydia Mott died soon after the birth of Sarah and in 1758 he married Jane dau. of Cyrus Richmond, soon after removing to Dutchess County N.Y. where he died in 1791 aet 70 years. There was doubtless a close relationship between Ichabod's wife Lydia Mott, and Mary Mott, the second wife of Cyrus Richmond, but no record has been produced at the present time to establish the genealogy of this particular Mott family. (IV). Ichabod Bowerman left the statement that he descended from one of a family of four brothers of English origin; that he was born in Mass. 1720-21. mar. (1), Lydia Mott and (2), Jane Richmond of Stonington Conn, in 1755; soon after removing to with his first family to `Great Nine Partners' in Dutchess Co. N.Y. This tradition of the four brothers was confirmed by an octogenarian named Stephen Bowerman who resided in Ohio. Although an entire stranger to the Canadian branch of the family, Stephen repeated in 1845, the same tradition of the family lineage which was current among the descendants of Ichabod. But for a further confirmation of this tradition we have only to refer to family of (II). Thos. and Mary having besides two daughters the four brothers Samuel-Thomas-Stephen-and Benjamin. Leaving Mass. shortly after his marriage with Jane Richmond in 1758, the family moved westerly along the Sound into N.Y. State. upon the border of the Hudson River. At Poughkeepsie was already a settlement of Friends; hence they sought the neighbourhood of their own sect, settling in a rugged frontier section. The homestead lay near the site of the of the present village of `Verbank'; and is a rocky and hilly farm. Lone

stretches of stone walls attest the stubborn nature of the holding, and the unremitting toil necessary to make it habitable and renumerative. This fact alone offers ample reason for the emigration of the next generation in 1790 - 96; with little justification for the assumption of political or religious persecution, a favourite affectation of later generations. Near the site of the original dwelling, later destroyed by fire, is a deep chasm in the rocky hill-side probably worn away by the stream. At the bottom of the fall a deep pool shademxby the overgrowing cedar making the place an attractive swimming resort. Although the family bearing the name `Bowerman' have been more than a century alien to their birth place, the swimming-pool still bears the name `Bo-erman's Hole'. As the family of Ichabod Bowerman of Dutchess Co. belonged to the Society of Friends, it is to the records of that society we must look for data concerning them. The quaker files are unquestionably authentic, but they are very meagre, stinted in information of a personal nature, devoid of praise of tribute, and consisting chiefly of genealogical records and occasional Incidents of the local distraint for military purpose. Outside of the latter there is little beyond complaints' for violation of the Discipline', and the recorded verdict, but no record of the deliberations of the committees. Friends as a society have always been strict disciplinarians, but the paltry fragments known as Records' are useless in the effort to discover either the numerical strength of the society or individual sentiment of it's members. Individualism merges into or is suppressed in the general and impersonal character of all committee reports which never evince a suspicion of clerical inspiration. Quaker conservatism is a curious contradiction to the uncompromising radicalism of it's religious innovations. While conservatism is a dominant factor in the unwritten code of Quakerism making its members trusted citizens on the one side and loyal subjects on the other, the name itself does not stand as a synonym for perfection; hence the influence of the Revolutionary movement of 1776, found lodgement among Friends, disturbing the harmony and scattering the members of the flock. Slow as Friends are to violate the traditions of their own eventful history and appreciating the blessings of religious freedom, they naturally sympathize with the growth of individual liberty and the spread of intellectual knowledge; but popular clamor does not blend well with the colorless calm of Quaker retirement. Had the true principals of Quakerism obtained to the exclusion of all secular heresy, the records of petty grievances at this period of Quaker history would never have been preserved. Ichabod Bowerman was member of the `Oswego Preparative Meeting' of Friends within the verge'- to use an expression peculiar to the records - of `Great Nine Partners' Mo. Mtg. in Dutchess Co. N.Y.; and as before observed the only record alluding to him is contained in a compliant' to the meeting under date 19th. Mar. 1779, as foll---

A compliant came to this meeting by way of the last Perparative Meeting at Oswego against Ichabed Boerman for being neglectful in attending our meetings, and sleeping in meeting when there; also for keeping uncivil people in his house and selling liquor; therefore this meeting appoints Zeblon Hoxsie and Stephen Dean to treat with him on that account and make report to next Mo. Mtg.'

This stereotyped formula of accusation bears the customary impersonal character of the society's deliberations in general; and in this particular isa painful contrast to the generous frankness practised by Quakerdom at large. Non-Attendance'- and Sleeping in Meeting'- have always been viewed as grave infractions of Friend's Discipline. Those were dealt with' first by a remonstrance form a visiting committee and lastly by Disownment'. In the matter of keeping uncivil people in his house', it is a family tradition that a relative of Jane Richmond, Ichabod's wife, - one Joseph Earl, a proBritish agitator was a frequent visitor at the house of Ichabod. True to

the precepts of the sect, the whole family are well known to have favored the Royal Cause; but the overt act of harbouring a spy brought the family under the surveillance of Continential troops. Searching parties catechized even the infants, and more than once ransacked the premises, to secure the arrest of Earl, but without avail. After many minor depredations, Earl escaped into New Brunswick, Canada, where he is said to have died at an advanced age. The recounting of his escapades during the war made for fire-side stories for Winter-Nights' entertainments of the next generation. However peaceful were the Quakers individually, the records of the society abound with evidence of much personal suffering, distraint, and ultimate exile. Nor did the society itself escape the infection of revolution; and it is rather to the dissentions among the Friends themselves than from extraneous interference, that the society suffered most. This disposition among members to make cause with one or the other party, in striking contradiction to the peaceful precepts of the society, evinces the predominant influence of race over religion; and arrouses the suspicion that our early `Fathers' were themselves far removed from the seventh heaven of Utopian Quakerism. At a subsequent Mo. Mtg. the committee previously appointed produced the following report, - The Friends appointed to visit Ichabod Boreman report' they had; and did not appear in a disposition to make a suitable satisfaction for the complaint against him, therefore the same Friends are appointed to inform him that the meeting expects to disown him; and to draw a testimony and produce to next Mo. Mtg.'

The record further states that- Friends appointed to draw a testimony against Ichabod Bowerman produced it here which is approved and signed, Andrew Moore and Ladowick Hoxsie are appointed to read it at the close of a First-day meeting at Oswego; also to give him a copy if he desired it; and inform him of a right to appeal; and make repot to next Monthly Meeting, producing the testimony. No copy of this particular `testimony' appears to have been preserved among these carefully guarded archives; and what wording of the document may have been can be surmised by those alone who are familiar with this eccentric from of Discipline'. In the minutes of the 6th. Mo. following occurs the information that- Ichabod Bowerman informs this meeting that he doth appeal from the judgement of this meeting to our next Quarterly Meeting which is allowed of.' The minutes of 7th. Mo. further explains that ... This meeting taking into consideration the appeal of Echabed Boreman from the judgement of this meeting appoints the following Friends to attend the next Quarterly Meeting with the minutes and papers relating thereto and speak to it as need shall require; viz. Izrael Titus - Samuel Dorland - Paul Hoag - Edward Palmer - Jacob Dean - Samuel Hallock'. That the verdict of the Oswego Mo. Mtg. was probably due to local prejudice is to inferred from the reversal of judgement by the Quarterly Meeting; a copy of the minutes from the latter being contained in the records of the Mo. Mtg. as follows.. 10th. Mo. 20th. 1780 - The Extracts of our last Quarterly Meeting's minutes were read in this meeting whereby it appears the quarterly Meeting directs this meeting to restore Echabed Bowerman to his rights of membership again which this meeting submits to.' Something of Ichabod's character as well as much contemporary sectarian history may read between the lines of this unpleasant episode. David brother of Ichabod is the David mentioned in Freeman's Hist. of Cape Cod is inferred from the following... In 1874, April 11th. Mr Jeremiah Bowman died. He was descended from Thomas Bowman (Sometimes written Bourman-Burman-and -Bowerman-) who was early in Barnstable; and whose posterity were in Falmouth where David was born who married first Ruth Dillingham daughter of Jeremiah Dillingham; and second, Hannah Wing daughter of Zaccheus Wing and had - )Issue)

(V)- Jeremiah -- Peace Deborah

(V) Jememiah mar Deborah dau. of Zeccheus Wing a sister of his father's (2nd.) wife; and removed as did also his father to Sidney Maine, but returned to this town (Sandwich Cape Cod) 1788. He had issue .. viz..

(VI)- Charlotte David ...(mar. Sarah Allen). Ruth .....( " Benjamin Swift) Abner .... Asa ......(born 1786) The mother died 12th Feb. 1816' (Freeman's Hist. Cape Cod).

Now as Asa was born in 1786, Jeremiah was probably married about 1778; and born about 1753. He died in 1834 probably aged 81 years quite within the limits of the family longevity. Jeremiah's father David probably married (2nd) about 1752, and allowing 27 years for his age at his 2nd marriage, he would have been born in 1725 which is also the probable date of birth of David the brother of Ichabod the ancestor of the Canadian branch of the Bowerman family. From these data it is presumable that Ichabod was born at Falmouth Mass.

FIFTH GENERATION

(V). Jane Bowerman- (IV. Ichabod and Lydia Mott).- born probably 1745 in Mass. mar. Sylvester Richmond son of Cyrus Richmond and his (2nd.) wife Phebe Mott. Sylvester was born in Stonington Conn. 4th June 1737; and died June 1893-4 (maybe 1833-4). In 1772 Sylvester and Jane lived in Poughkeepsie N.Y.; but in 1795 they removed to Earnestown Co. of Frontenach C.W. According to the `Richmond Family',- `Sylvester was a quaker and was dissatisfied with proceedings of the Revolutionary party sympathising with the Mother country.' He suffered considerably on account of his Tory proclivities; and went to Canada where he lived many years between Kingston and the head of the Bay of Quinte. He was imprisoned at Poughkeepsie- wether for religious scruples or political offenses is not known'. Sylvester was three times married. In his old age he facetiously remarked and perhaps truthfully, that the `Lord sent him first wife; the second he chose for himself; while the devil sent him the last'. `Granny Eleanor' as she was familiarly known, was the last wife; she survived Sylvester; and is said to have been none too gentle with the step-children.

(V). Elizabeth Bowerman-(IV) Icahabod and Lydia Mott)- born in Mass. about 1748, married in Dutchess

Co. N.Y. Ebinezar Palmer; moved to Canada in 1790 and settled on Lot 2. - 1st Concession N.W.L. in the Twp. of Hallowell, Co. Pr. Ed. The farm adjoining on the east was selected in 1794 by Isaac Garrett who came over with his family in the autumn of 1795; but finding his log-cabin unfinished, they were compelled to establish a joint occupation of the Palmer one-room log house during the entire winter; making a crowded company of sixteen persons.

Although the Palmers first located on the lot before mention, there is no record to show that they owned it. Ebinezar was in the twp. of Hallowell as late as 1815; and later moved to the twp. of Hillier. His Will is dated 22nd. Mar. 1815. describing him as of the `township of Hallowell'. Among its other provisions the Will specifies that --- I will and positively order that my wife Elizabeth Palmer shall be furnished with a good bed and bedding; wearing apparel; and good wholesome food; and good attendance in case of sickness or being anywise disabled during her natural life and in Lieu of her right to dower.' The executors were ordered to dispose of the real and personal estate; and after making the above provisions for his widow were further ordered to divide the property among the eleven children. These executors were two of Ebinezar's sons-in-law- viz. Aaron White and Joseph Dorland. Elizabeth Bowerman wife of Ebinezar Palmer, died in the twp. of Hillier Co. Pr. Ed. on the 28th June 1827. -aet 79 years.

In the assessment of the twp. of Hallowell for the year 1798, Ebinezar Palmer is rated `first-class' at a tax of 2.6d.; but in the assessment of 1808, he is represented as having - `Acres 200; cleared 50; house log; horses 2; oxen 2; cows 4; cattle 4; swine 1; total apprizement L118.10.8,; District expenses 4.11; Representative expenses 1.8d.'

The Crown Patent of Lot 15, containing 200 acres, was issued on the 17th May 1802, to the Hon. Richard Cartwright; but there is no record available showing how this property came into the possession of the three named persons, who sold it to Hannah Butts in 1812. Gideon Bowerman, a half brother of Hannah, died in 1810, leaving the sum of L100.0.0. each to some of his brothers and sisters. Gideon was never married; and this L400.00, probably represents Gideon's bequest to Hannah, Stephen acting as executor. (see ???? ....) Stephen is known to have acted as executor to Gideon's estate; but it is not clear how the executors came into control of this lot 15. At the Prep. Mtg. of Women Friends held at West Lake 8th. SIXTH GENERATION.

(VI)- Cyrus Richmond-(V-Jane;IV-Ichabod and Lydia Mott). born 6th Jan. 1769 at `Great Nine Partners' in Dutchess Co. N.Y.; died 27th.Jan.1854; and is buried in the S.E. corner of the Friend's burial ground on `Bowerman's Hill'. Cyrus was a Quaker preacher of considerable notoriety, chiefly on account of his eccentric behaviour. On one occasion he went to meeting wearing his night-cap under his hat; and on that particular occasion he is said to have announced prophetically `that one of the congregation contemplated making a journey'. Cyrus mysteriously added that if the party undertaking the journey confined himself strictly to business, he would return safely; but that if he combined pleasure with business he would lose his life'. The sequel is as foll.. Elisha Sills, a merchant of Picton, was at the meeting and heard the `prophecy'. As Sills intended shortly going to New York for goods, this prediction of Cyrus made a considerable impression on his mind. Later Sills went to N. Y. and bought his stock, intending to return the following day; but happening to meet F. Lazier of Dundas C.W.. the two arranged to accompany, an excursion of Professional men to Boston. Not finding Lazier at his room next morning, Sills left the city for home. Lazier however started on the excursion; but at - Norwood or Norwalk- the train was derailed and Lazier was killed. (S.F.
