SYC Open House

Despite a rainy start to the day, the Club had a better-than-hoped-for turnout of visi-tors. We had approximately 80 - 90 community members who had never been to the Club. Of those, well over 50 asked questions and listened attentively to a description of the Club and to membership infor-mation and asked follow-up questions. At least 12 people expressed interest in joining the Club in the future. The Ambassadors and I were actively engaged with visitors from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. and again from about 4 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.. Some com-

munity members came expressly for the Sock Burning Party and they brought socks to burn along with them!

Many visitors said they learned about the Open House by driving or walking by the Club and seeing the banner and flags, others from the Chamber no-tices online and others through social media. Others said the yard signs alerted them, but they reported that the yard signs were difficult to read and that either the signs should have been larger or had larg-er print or brighter colors to attract attention. While no one said that a poster influenced them to come, Membership Committee member Tim Wilson, who

is in advertising professionally, said that the effort of putting up posters was worth-while from a community awareness perspective. Many thanks to Lisa Hartman of SEAS for all her excellent design and marketing skills for the Open House and many thanks to Bemis for the printing. Our Open House Committee consisted of Whitney Kent of SYSC, Matt Wierzbach, Lisa Hartman, and Winter

Kohler, all of SEAS; Jason Berdyck of the Sea Scouts; Tara Guell of SYC; Mark Wessel of Sail Sheboygan; Jerry and Lisa Geibel for the Sock Burning Party; and Tim Wilson and myself of the Membership Committee. We had excellent collaboration and sharing of ideas, efforts, resources, and economizing. Without the full effort of SEAS’ promotional and advertising efforts, we would not have had the large turn-out that we experienced. Thanks to the Whitney, JuJu Senft, Matt, and all for their work providing boat rides, a huge draw for the all the organizations. Thanks to Jason Berdyck and Sea Scouts for their demonstration of rigging. Thanks to Sean and for providing a great environment, snacks, and the logistical support for displays and making guests feel welcome, and behind the scenes work. The Committee efforts were greatly supported by the Ambas-

sador Corps, members who volunteered to talk to visitors about the Club. They are: Chris and Tanya Aldag, Kenny and Lucinda Ebbers, Dale Huenink, Denise Kastman, Mike and Dione Knop, Bonnie Lemke, Bob Melzer, Leighanne Metter-Jensen, Andrew Morgan, Paul and Georgia Otto, and Melanie and Mike Romas. We also thank Deb Wolniak and Lisa Hartman for the Brats & Boats brat fry on behalf of the Wisconsin Military Network. Special thanks to the membership-at-large for making our visitors feel welcome and at home, proving that we are, indeed, the friendliest Yacht Club on the lake! Brats & Boats had about 15 people for boat rides. If you live on a high traffic street please sign up for placement of yard signs next year.

The Sailing Education Association of Sheboygan (SEAS) broke ground Monday on a new boat storage and mainte-

nance facility that will also house their headquarters, education rooms, and provide a controlled environment for volunteers and staff to maintain its fleet of power and sailing boats. Through a donation from The Vollrath Co., LLC, SEAS was able to obtain a 1.75 acre parcel near the corner of Superior Avenue and 18th Street. With donations from other area supporters SEAS has been able to jump-start this project. “We are excited to be able to finally reach the point in our organ-ization’s development where we will not just maintain our fleet in our own facility but have designated space for education and to house our staff,” according to Leslie Kohler, Chairman of the Board of SEAS. “In the past, SEAS has had to contend with offic-es and equipment spread out across the city and county in rented or

borrowed space not suitable for many repair and maintenance projects, certainly no room for public education,” she added. “Putting this under one roof will add efficiency to the oper-ation, foster public access to boating and promote camarade-rie among our staff, volunteers, students and the public,” Geoff Rudolph SEAS Operations Manager said. The building was designed by Erik Jensen and LJM Archi-tects. “It will be a 26,250 sq. ft. single story structure with a mezzanine, and large enough to store the entire fleet with room for growth,” according to Jensen. “Design features in-clude a band of translucent glazing at the second-story height to allow for generous day-lighting of the entire interior, large outrigger supported overhangs and an aesthetic blend of strong horizontal and vertical lines. The building will be finished in “gallery blue” siding to blend in with the build-ings in the area. The new building will house the administrative offices, a shop and space for boat building and maintenance, a classroom space, a separate room for Sheboygan Sea Scouts Ship No. 50, and storage for SEAS entire fleet in one location,” Jensen said. “As a lifelong sailor, Air Force jet pilot, MIT graduate, and successful businessman, the late Terry J. Kohler under-stood the multiple disciplines of sailing and boating in general. He understood how learning those disciplines through sailing you can become better at decision making and problem solving, helping you to be more successful throughout your life. Terry’s vision was to provide access to learning boating skills to as many people and future gen-erations as he could through the formation of SEAS,” explained Jerry Baumann, Vice President of Operations for Windway Capital, Corp. “This location and design was developed out of years of searching and planning. Balancing the needs of the organi-zation, the budget, and the community led us to where we are today. This will be a major step forward in providing quality boating programming to the community,” said Matt Wierzbach, Program Director for SEAS. Jos. Schmitt Construction Co., Inc. is providing general contracting services and expects construction of the new headquarters to be completed in the fall of 2017. “We believe that water related activities are fun, build character, develop mental and physical acuity and should be enjoyed by everyone,” says Leslie Kohler.

Recent Race Results

June 7 was our first race of the year, with a beautiful southerly breeze and flat water. We finished in the harbor, under spinnaker, right between the coast guard station and Blue Harbor. Vanishing Point crew was Mark Wessel, Jason Diener, Kris Fredricksen, and Adam Grandlic. The Governor’s Cup had winds blowing 18-22 knots out of the south with building waves throughout the day. Keith Krautkramer’s B-25 Pale Sail broke a lower gudgeon on their rudder and had to retire after the first race. Mark Wessel’s Olson 25 Vanishing Point had a full-on broach on the last leg of race one, putting the spreaders in the water, but managed to sail out of it and still win the race. Great conditions for our first buoy race of the year. Vanishing Point crew: Mark Wessel, Mike Elmergreen, Jason Diener, and David Bronson Hika Bay Full Crew race was 16 miles up to Cleveland, Wisconsin and back. We started at 15-16 knots out of the SSW with flat seas and built to 20-25 knots by the time we made it up to the turning mark and had a beautiful, downwind ride under spinnaker in the hazy conditions due to the 45 Fº water temperature. Winds dropped to 10-12 knots by the time we made it halfway back and the fog thickened a little. Vanishing Point crew: Dave Dochterman, Jean Dochterman, Mike Elmergreen, and David Bronson Last night (21 June) we had 13-16 knots of wind from the South. Nine boats were out for twice around a wind-ward/leeward course, and then a short leg into the harbor to finish. Some boats chose to fly a spinnaker on the leg in, and it really paid off for Slip Knot, catching and passing Vanishing Point on that last mile coming in.

Boat Denaming/Renaming

Alex and Allison Butterbaugh and James Owen held a Denaming/Renaming Ceremony on 29 June for the new Olson 25 they are bringing to the SYC Fleet. To change the name of a vessel without consulting Poseidon is to invoke his wrath, so in order to change a boat's name, a traditional ceremony is used to appease the gods of the seas. The first thing that must be done when renaming a boat is to purge its old name from the Ledger of the Deep, and from Poseidon's memory.

The renaming ceremony can then begin, and should take place as soon after the purging ceremony as possible. Finally, the gods of the winds must be appeased with another short ceremony, which will assure fair winds and smooth seas, wherever Full Send sails. Alex and Allison and James heeded Poseidon and had the renaming of their boat performed in accord-ance with Poseidon's instructions. (To be certain that Bacchus was also properly propitiated, a fermented beverage was sacrificed.)
