Commodores Comments September is the beginning of the end of summer, with
the start of school and summer schedules winding
down. Unfortunately our boating season is also soon
coming to a close. We just spent a great weekend racing
to Manitowoc for the annual club Rendezvous. This is a
great annual tradition that invites members and boaters
to gather for a summer party.
Years ago when the fleet was more cruising oriented,
many boats would head out together to spend vacation
time on the water. The rendezvous spot was always chosen carefully and
it would change from year to year. Some past locations included
Kewaunee, Marinette, and Peninsula State Park in Door County. These
parties would give the chance for members to drive and meet those who
were traveling by boat. In more recent years, the party has been planned
around the annual race to Manitowoc. It still offers a great chance to re-
lax with old friends and meet some new ones.
This month, I would like to share a little about the racing experience
itself. Boats headed out on Saturday, 18 August to find strong winds and
rolling waves. We all spend time and energy guessing what the wind and
weather will do. Do we race along the shore? Do we go way out? All
boats have these choices and everyone does it differently. In the long run,
the wind stayed steady and the seas laid down. It made for a pretty nice
run to Manitowoc, even though we could not fly our kites. It was a long
race this year. Five hours for us. That is longer than most races to Mani-
towoc. However, nothing like my race this year to Mackinac Island,
which took 61 hours!
Thank you to Dawn Vertz for organizing this years party. Everyone
enjoyed pizza and other great food on the upper deck of the Manitowoc
Marina. Thank you to the crew of SlipKnot for providing the beer. Great
fun was had by all! Consider joining the party next year; all are welcome.
On Sunday, when we set out to race home, the race didnt look too
promising. There was very little wind at the start and some boats did not
even put up their sails. The wind slowly filled in, the lighter boats took
off, and all enjoyed a steady breeze to bring us back to our home port.
The cruisers stopped to swim in the beautiful water off Whistling
Straights. The racers enjoyed flat seas and sunshine. These are the days
we will remember in the dead of winter. I am proud of our clubs racing
fleet and the camaraderie that we enjoy. Thank you Dave Bronson for
heading up our racing program and all you do!
If you attend only one meeting a year, this is it. Your club will elect
new leadership this coming month. Please come to the monthly member-
ship meeting to vote for the future leaders of your club.
Please also remember to get your hours in by the end of September if
you signed up for Dues Work Off this year.
See you at our club!
~Commodore Mike
