Concert on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 11 at 3:00pm in the sanctuary of the First United Methodist Church in Hartford.
The featured performers will be the musically talented Ernest Brusubardis family. The father, Ernie, a gifted pianist and choral director at Hartford Union High School, will perform piano litera-ture showcasing the recently purchased 6'4" grand piano. Joining their father in ensemble music will be his talented children, daugh-ters Sonora, Daniella and Arianna, all violinists and son Viktor on the cello. Indra Brusubardis, the mother and a fine soprano, will perform several selections with her husband at the keyboard. A special feature will be the presentation of a piano-organ duet by the church organist, Ken French and Ernie Brusubardis.
Plan now to make this free concert a family event with friends and relatives on Mother’s Day. You will be able to greet the fam-ily at a reception following the concert. Contact Ruth Knoll at 262-673-3704, church music director, for further information.

Who passed away eleven years ago, May 3rdGod saw that he was getting tired and a cure was not to be, so He put His arms around him and whispered, “Come with me.” With tearful eyes we watched him suffer and saw him fade away. Although we loved him deeply, we could not make him stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands to rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us, he only takes the best.
IN LOVING MEMORYof our beloved husband, dad and grandpa
Sadly missed but deeply loved by his wife, children and grandchildren

LHorseFeathers
A2222222222222222NOFTillers & Trowels
S EVERAL WEEKS AGO the first hummingbird of the year was spotted in western Wisconsin. The sandhill cranes could be heard and seen floating over the house. The first full flush of robins and red-winged blackbirds were heard in the yard.
Goldfinches are now flicking from feeders to trees through the garden. Bluebirds are looking for nesting spots across the broad lawn. Next will be the orioles looking for spring fruits and nectar. Are you ready to greet them? Most birds need some natural or even man made materials to con-struct a nest. Tired of losing my coco liners to the birds, I gave a friend of mine empty mesh fruit bags so that she could fill them with horse hair and satisfy my feathered friends search for fluff. These will be hung from tree branches and barn walls so the birds can easily access them. Last year, I made a simple oriole feeder of sturdy wire with a gentle hook for orange halves and a basket to place a dish with grape jelly in for nectar lovers. Bluebirds like long expanses of shorter grass to hunt in and protect their nests. Bluebird houses are specifically designed with the proper size ports, double doorsteps to deter predators and a removable side to check the nest once a week or so and clean it out at the end of the season. Sparrows and wrens will use the same birdhouse year after year with-out regular housecleaning, but most birds prefer and need a clean bird-house to raise healthy broods to adolescence. Make sure a birdhouse doorway is warmed by the sun. Drainage without entry for parasitic flies is also necessary. A perch, for most birds however, is not. My wrens love the ornamented birdhouse gourds that I craft for them. Many birds will not use a painted or artificially colored nest. Even ducks and owls will use nesting boxes to raise their young. Do some careful research online or at the library to find out what size, shape and entry each species needs. Book stores and garden magazines often offer books on how to make simple and functional birdhouses, sometimes of surpris-ing materials. Use untreated wood to build houses. Use non corroding hardware. Provide an overhang to both shade the doorway and allow rain to run off effectively as well. You can even make a miniature of your own home (or the home you wish you had) and see who comes to live there. Photos and a journal will help you learn more about the birds in your environment, help you track populations and get ready for next year’s arrivals in plenty of time to enjoy their stay for the growing season and beyond.
