The Japan Exhibition Association (JEXA) was established in 1967, and it is now Japan’s largest and most influential industry group in the exhibition industry, consisting of around 300 member companies and organizations that are involved in “exhibitions and international trade fairs.”

The group’s members are broadly categorized into three types of entities: “organizers,” “show venues,” and “event supporters.” The “organizers” are industry groups such as the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association, which holds the Tokyo Motor Show, newspaper companies such as the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, and private organizing companies. The “show venues” include large venues such as Makuhari Messe and Intex Osaka, as well as venues throughout Japan. The “event supporters” consist of various service companies such as contractors and hotels.

We Strive to Expand the Exhibition Industryfor the Development of Japan’s Economy

Exhibitions and tradeshows yield enormous benefits to a wide variety of sectors. Exhibitors gain opportunities for business expansion and inspiration from their competitors; visitors enjoy comparative reviews of products and purchase options; host cities gain long-term economic benefits from the visit of domestic and foreign business travelers; and companies engaged in event operations receive stable revenue.

What do exhibitions do for the host country? By gathering exhibitors and visitors from around the world, the country stands to become a world-class center and trendsetting place for the industry. In view of these huge benefits, countries in Europe, the United States and in recent years many Asian countries too, especially China, set their sights on developing the exhibition industry by expediting their expansion and construction of exhibition venues.

Japan, on the other hand, remains far behind the global trend on account of various factors including an insufficient recognition of the significance of the

exhibition business in the political, bureaucratic and economic circles.

However, the exhibition industry in Japan is beginning to get a fair evaluation recently. As more companies are now attracted to the potential of the trade show business, the JEXA membership is rapidly growing.

Amid this development, JEXA is firmly determined to expand the exhibition industry, in order to contribute to Japan’s economic revival.

I sincerely look forward to your active support and cooperation for our association.

Exhibitions that host a large number of overseas exhibitors and visitors.

Skilled industry professionals through sharing of know-hows.

Exhibition industry promotion into a national policy of Japan.

Partnership to overcome shared obstacles of the exhibition industry.

Exhibitions that bring benefits to Japan, the host cities and all others.

Comparison of Each Country’s Exhibition Space

Tripling Japan’s Total Exhibition Venue Space to 1 Million SQM !

Total Exhibition Space of the World Continuously Keeps IncreasingExhibitions invigorate all industries, and bring about significant, ongoing economic effects for host regions and countries in the areas of accommodation, food and beverages, transportation, and so on. As such, countries around the world are incorporating exhibitions into their important economic policies, and are strongly promoting the expansion and new construction of exhibition venues.

Figure 1 below shows a world ranking of exhibition venue space. Even Tokyo Big Sight, the largest venue in Japan, is only in 78th place. Figure 2 on the right is a comparison of the total areas of exhibition venues in countries. The area is generally proportional to the economic scale of the country, but Japan’s area is just 373,000m². Thus, Europe, the United States, and China have areas ranging from several times to around a dozen times, the size of Japan’s. As a result, many exhibition venues in Japan are filled to capacity, and launching new exhibitions and expanding existing exhibitions is difficult.

The fact that exhibition venues in Japan are filled to capacity means that there is latent demand several times the current level of supply. Accordingly, there is an urgent need to promote the expansion and new construction of exhibition venues across Japan, and rapidly expand the area to over 1 million m², three times the current level.

Figure 3 on the right is a “plan for tripling the total space of Japan’s exhibition venues.” Even if this fully realized, the area would still not be sufficient relative to the rest of the world, and it is expected that all of the venues would soon become filled to capacity.

In order for Japan, which lacks resources, to exist as an economic powerhouse, becoming an “exhibition nation” where people, objects, and information gather from around the world, is essential.

Japan is Taking Action to Become an “Exhibition Nation.”

Representatives of exhibition associations in Japan, China, and South Korea gathered in Seoul, South Korea, and the “First Japan-China-South Korea Exhibition Forum” was held. A ceremony was held for signing a “declaration of Japan, China, and South Korea cooperation,” and a new page was written in the history of East Asia’s exhibition industry.

Prime Minister Abe declares at the Diet:“Japan needs large exhibition venues”

Yokohama City decided to carry out construction to expand PACIFICO Yokohama, and this news was reported by Kanagawa Shimbun. This was great news for Japan’s exhibition industry, which is struggling with a lack of exhibition venues.Nevertheless, at the same time, the realities of opportunity loss became apparent, including, “The 70% operating rate of the exhibition venue is almost the upper limit,” “Major reservations have been made up to five years ahead of time,” and “In some years, there were 4,000 applications for the year, and only 1,000 were accepted.”

Expansion of exhibition venues in Yokohama City!Announcement on first page of local newspaper

The inaugural meeting of the “Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Exhibition Industry Parliamentary Group” was held on March 27, and 25 diet members expressed their support developing the exhibition industry.Since then, number of the members continues to increase (98 members as of Sep. 2017). They are moving actively such as submitting requests to governments heads.Mr. Taro Aso, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Finance, expressed his support to the exhibition industry saying “Exhibition venues are not only buildings, but they are economic infrastructures generating huge value”

At the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly on March 15, 2012, (then) Tokyo Governor Shintaro Ishihara stated, “We will expand Tokyo Big Sight, and we shall do this as much as possible, as quickly as possible.” After this, It was decided that Tokyo Big Sight would be expanded by 16,000m² in 2016, and 20,000m² in 2019.

Statement by (previous) Tokyo Governor Ishihararegarding the expansion of Big Sight: “We shall expandthis building as much as possible, as quickly as possible!” Exhibition venues can be expected to produce high-level economic effects,

create opportunities for innovation and business, and strengthen brand power. As such, based on recognizing the importance of realizing new growth for Japan, the Japan Business Federation announced a proposal calling for the development of large exhibition venues. In moving ahead with the development of large exhibition venues, there is a strong hope for strong leadership on the part of the government, and the economic world has expressed that it will further focus on promoting exhibitions and strengthening international competitiveness in a variety of forms.

Japan Business Federation proposes developing “Exhibition venues with an area of 300,000m²”

Minister for Economy, Trade and Industry Motoo Hayashi (at that time)

attended the JEXA New Year’s party in 2016. In front of 827 participants, a record number, he expressed his hope regarding the future, stating, “Japanese exhibition industry will develop to win globally” This was a great inspiration for JEXA members.Furthermore, numerous personnel of local governments that are aiming to establish “exhibition cities” were also in attendance. Many local governments such as Gunma, Kyoto, Fukuoka, Okinawa, Nagoya, Narita, Niigata, are seriously considering the construction of venues.

Minister Hayashi expressed to “Develop Exhibitions”

Local governments across Japan to construct venues

Around the world, there are systems in which the numbers of visitors announced by exhibition organizers are investigated by third-party organizations, and certification is provided, but this type of system did not exist in Japan. Thus in 2012, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) completed and launched a certification system in line with global standards, viewing the establishment of this certification system as a first step in the development of the exhibition industry.
