• Designed for Mobile, Handheld use in the field or on the move

Batteries

• Batteries should last approximately 13 hours.

• When batteries begin to get low, the Low Battery Indicator appears at the top of the display.

Recharging Batteries

• To recharge batteries:– Turn radio off.– Drop the radio into the charger. An amber

light will appear while charging. A green light will appear when the radio is finished charging.

– When finished, you may leave the radio in the charger.

– When radio is not in use, charge it once a month.

Power And Volume Control• To turn the EF Johnson handheld on, turn the

volume control clockwise. The screen will activate, and the radio will beep. Be careful not to turn the volume knob too far, or the volume will be set too high.

• Turn the EF Johnson handheld off by turning the volume control counterclockwise until it clicks.

Channel Selection• To change the channel, turn the channel knob. The

extreme counterclockwise position is Channel 1, and the extreme clockwise position is Channel 16.

• Current channel name or frequency will appear on the display.

Zone Selection

• Select the current Zone by pressing the UP or DOWN keys from the home screen.

• The current zone number or name will appear on the display.

“ABC” Selection Ring

• The ABC selector underneath the Channel Selection knob is not programmed and has no function.

Key Lock• To turn key lock on, press the orange arrow-shaped

key underneath the antenna. Do the same to turn key lock off.

• This key is hard to press. The radio will beep when switching key lock on and off.

• When key lock is on, only the PTT key and channel knob will respond when used. All other keys will be locked from use.

Push to Talk (PTT)(Release to Listen)

• PTT is not affected by the key-lock function

Microphone

• The microphone is located next to the F3 button in the center of the radio’s face.

• When transmitting, hold the radio upright 3-4 inches from your mouth and speak in a normal voice.

Speaker And Microphone

• The speaker and the microphone are in different locations.

• The speaker is located at the bottom of the radio’s face.

Frequency Scanning

• Press F3 to begin a normal frequency scan with the current scan list.

• To change the current scan list, use the “Scan Select” option in the Menu.

• While scanning, this icon appears:

• Press F3 again to end the frequency scan.

Monitor • If using simplex:

– Press to monitor the current frequency.

• If using a repeater:– Press to monitor the

transmit frequency.– Press and hold until

the radio beeps to monitor the receive frequency.

• While monitoring, this icon appears:

• Press again to close squelch.

between high and low power modes

• This function can be accessed from the menu

• HOME ZONE• Press to change zone

to Zone 1, then adjust channel knob for desired channel

• This takes the radio back to CAP Zone 1 with one button

Using The Menu

• Press F2 to open the menu.• Select a menu item with

the UP and DOWN keys.• Choose the item by pressing F2 again.

• Press F1 to go back one level or exit the

menu.

Menu Items• “Backlight”

– Backlight on/off

• “Chan Selct” – Channel Select– Allows one to change channels by pressing

the UP or DOWN keys. Turning the channel knob will revert the channel back to its original setting.

• “Home Zone”– When chosen, it returns the user to the

home zone. (CAP ZONE 1)

• “RW Scan” – Radio-wide scan– On – begins scanning the radio-wide scan

list. This can contain 16 channels from any zone.

– Off – turns RW Scan off– While scanning, this icon will appear:

• “Scan” – regular scan– On – begins scanning the frequencies in the

current zone’s scan list.– Off – turns Scan off.– While scanning, this icon will appear:

• “Scan Selct”– Choose scan list for regular scan mode by

pressing UP or DOWN keys– When in Scan Select mode, the scan icon

will appear
