1. The method for analyzing chlorine in the discharge canal is a variation

of ASIH method, D 1427-68, "Nonreferee Method A- Starch-Iodine Titration

Method". A -py of the method used by the station "Determination of Residual

orine in Chlorinated Condenser Water" is attahed. This is the same

method as is used in analyzing for chlorine in the discharge canal.

-DETERMINATION OF RESIDUAL CHLORITE IN CHLORINATED COTIDENSER WATER

Starch-iodide Method

Scope and Summary

This. method is based on the liberation of free iodine from potassium iodide by waters containing chlorine. The liberated iodine is titrated with a standard solution of sodium thlosulfate using a starch solution as indicator.

This method is suitable for determination of residual chlorine in condenser water and certain industrial process waters. It is not suitable for highly polluted waters.

Apparatus

Sampling bottle: 125-ml capacity, calibrated at lO-ml and 110-ml mark Casserole: Approximately 300-ml capacity Buret: 50-ml Capacity Water sampler: Varies slightly with different stations but basically

similar to attached sketch (Figure 1)

Reagents Chemical laboratory No.

Potassium iodide, 7.5 per cent solution 108-B Platner's starch solution -237-C Sodium thiosulfate, O.lN 61 -A Sodium thiosulfate, 0.0028N..

Note: This reagent must be prepared fresh daily by measuring exactly 28 ml of 0.1N sodium thiosulfate into a 1,000-ml,

. volumetric flask and filling to the mark with distilled water. The solution should then be mixed thoroughly.

Procedure

1. Connect the sample bottle to the water sample connection located at the.tail pipe of the condenser.

2. Open inlet and outlet valves and allow water to circulate until sampling lines are purged.

3. Shut off valves and discard water in test bottle.

.... .: Add10ml of potassium iodide solution to the sample, bottle and reconnect the sample bottle to the water sampler, open valves and admit water to the 110-ml mark. Close valves.

5. Mix sample. transfer to a 300-ml casserole and add 1 or 2 ml of starch solution.

, Z.; The chlorination system is designed to be automatic but will be operated

manually. A 24 hour timer is provided that can autcvtically start a

preselected chlorination puMp and open an automatic valve that will supply

sodium hypochlorite to three of the six circulating water purp bays. After

one half hour the automatic valve would close and the second automatic valve

would open allowin the ran three bays to be chlorinated. After

chlorination of the circulating water bays, the service water bay would be

.,..,chlorimated for ne half. hour-,by- the,,automatic valve -to -the circulating

water bays closing and the valve for the service bay opening. Upon

completion, the pup would shut off, and all autoatic valves would close.

The cycle would again begin in 24 hours or less.

However, since it is planned to chlorinate less frequently then every 24

hours, the automatic timer will not be used. It will then be necessary

for the operator to manually initiate the cycle whenever it is desired to

chlorinate. The cycle will then proceed as described in the preceding

paragraph.

3. Since the flows at Indian Point 2 will be faster than at

Indian Point 1, will the chlorine residuals be greater?

The rate of flow of the condenser cooling water at

Indian Point 2 will be faster than the rate of flow of

condenser cooling water at Indian Point 1. The data on

chlorine concentrations in the outfall from Indian Point 1

indicates a residual at the point of discharge into the

river of less than 0.1 ppm. The data is inadequate for

the purpose of calculating chlorine residuals at the point

of discharge into the river from Indian Point 2 because of

the complexity of the time/concentration relationship. Con

Edison will obtain the necessary data in the next few weeks

in order to respond to this question. Although we expect

that the calculation will indicate a somewhat greater

chlorine residual if Unit 2 is operating alone than is the

case if Unit 1 is operating alone, we do not expect that

the difference will be substantial and in any case will be

substantially less than 0.5 ppm.

6. What is the status of the gates on the ourfall structure?

Are. two gates open at all times? If so, which two are

they? When will gates be installed?

All field work preparatory to receipt of gates is complete.

,Fabrication of the gates is also complete. Installation will

commence after the river thaws with work to be completed

in early April, 1972.

The two most southerly gates can be either completely opened

or completely closed, they are not adjustable. Positioning

of these gates (opened or-closed) will be dependent on opera

tion of the units to maintain a discharge velocity of 10

feet per second.
