Buffalo Chip TT Dirt Track …around the world. Further, this paradigm shift has provided an opportunity for riders of other marques to make inroads. But some of the steeli-est competition has taken place among Indian’s own team riders, Smith, Mees and Baker.

Bryan Smith was Kawasaki-mounted when he won the 2016 GN championship. Four-time GN champ Jared Mees rode for Rogers Racing Harley-Davidson at that time, and Brad Baker was a fac-tory rider for Harley-Davidson. Race fans gasped when Indian recruited these three last fall as the new Indian Wrecking Crew for 2017 and together they’ve taken over two dozen podium finishes so far. It’s as much fun watching them bust each other as it is cheering on the rest of the field to catch them.

The Chip’s new TT racetrack, with multiple right turns and jumps, was designed by seven-time GN Champ Chris Carr and it’s rumored to be challenging even for the pros. “It’s going to be real exciting,” said Mees. “It’s something that you’re not going to be able to guess. You’re going to have to come and see and watch the event.”

In addition to the Harley Factory riders—Kenny Coolbeth, Jr., Jake Johnson and Brandon Robinson—Mees, Smith and Baker will be keep-ing an eye on Sammy Halbert, Jeffrey Carver, Jr., and Briar Bauman, all of whom have tweaked the leaders. Spectators should watch out for them, too, because if they get on the leader’s tail it’ll be a free-for-all.

As exciting as AFT Pro Twins racing is, AFT Singles are hot, too. Shayna Texter leads the pack with four wins but quite a few of the top 10 or 12 riders have scored wins, too. The Chip’s unparal-leled track just might reveal who’s the toughest of them all.

So come out tomorrow to witness up-close rac-

ing thrills playing out on a new, unpredictable track, at a pivotal time in a race season like no other. It’s American Flat Track racing at its most exciting, guaranteed to kick off your Sturgis rally with the experience everyone will be talking about all week long. And wear your best T-shirt: NBC Sports is filming the whole thing.

Indian’s Brad Baker (left), Jared Mees (center), and Bryan (right) share a podium on one of the team’s sweeps. Racing just doesn’t get any more exciting than this.

Well, it’s 2017 and we’re all blessed to be here again. It’s particularly appreciated that so many of you came home to the Chip as much as two weeks before the “offi-cial” dates of the rally. It’s been a great time to learn of your past year’s life experi-ences and to meet new folks.

It’s great to renew the friendships, of course, but particularly satisfying to be sin-cerely thanked by a young lady telling of her trepidations about coming alone to a bike rally, relating how much she already loves the Chip, how friendly everyone is and repeatedly expressing gratitude for having created a place where a girl could go and feel completely safe. She said she’d never felt as “at home” as she does at the Chip.

The crew works all year in anticipation of and in preparation for your return. We feel best when you’re here with us. We enjoy the free pancake breakfast with you. We’ll enjoy hearing your thoughts about the free shooting at the shooting range, the new vendors, the charity rides, the 7 bike shows, the 7 races and the $2 beers and $3 wells at the Big Engine Bar. New food court buildings with elevated view-ing decks overlook the professional half-mile technical racetrack built in the amphi-theater. Yup, it’s one of a kind – the sort of thing someone said couldn’t be done.

We look forward to your suggestions about what we can do to serve you better again next year and hope you like what we’ve spent the past year doing. We realize there may be an inconvenience somewhere, and maybe a screw-up, but we live by our motto.

Ride Free, Take Risks.Enjoy,

— Woody & Crew

There’s so much racing at the Chip this week! Moto Stampede, a mix of riveting, riotous race action with concerts, stunts

and shows you won’t find anywhere else, raises the rally entertainment bar. It’s an explosive, seven-day fusion of music and motorcycles that’s garnering national TV coverage and international attention. Informed by 35 years of know-how, The Buffalo Chip can deliver a throwdown. That’s why it’s called The Largest Music Festival in Motorcycling®. But this year’s lineup is unprecedented.

It started yesterday with the ground-pounding Dirt Riot Endurance Racing trials at the Pow-erSports Complex. These intrepid drivers return today, Saturday, August 5th, to power their four-wheelers in UTV, Trail and Pro classes through the challenging course. It’s just the beginning of a week that’s jam-packed with double features of racing and rockin’.

Sunday, August 6th, is a prime example. Race fans and adrenaline junkies of all types have been captivated by American Flat Track’s war-on-two-wheels, watching historic adversaries Indian and Harley-Davidson duke it out in the dirt. Sunday night’s AFT Buffalo Chip TT presented by Indian Motorcycle takes place at the height of a season that’s seen an intensity of competition not wit-nessed in decades.

Racers say the Chip’s new track, designed by seven-time Grand National Champ Chris Carr with multiple right turns and jumps, is the most challenging venue in the 18-race series. It’s boldly placed smack in the middle of the Chip amphitheater so spectators can expect a nose-to-the-glass experience – without the glass! After the podium presentations, stay pumped and ready as Shinedown savagely cuts the cord on the Wolf-man Jack stage.

If you’re a Chip camper, you’re in. If not, get day passes for the flat track race and concert at www.motostampede.com. Either way, come early with a smile on your face because NBC Sports is filming for prime time telecast. It’s a motorcycle and music double-header no one should miss.

Stampede straight ahead on Tuesday, August 8th, by rolling into the Sportster Showdown, a ride-in bike show stoked with attitude, dude. Biltwell and Led Sled Customs celebrate Harley-Davidson’s nimble, super-customizable model with help from S&S Cycle and Metzeler Tire. Register by 2:00 p.m. and then throw down with Rebel Yell, a couple of PBRs and live music till awards at 5. Chopped or café’d, Ironhead or late model, come on over to The Gardens at the Chip’s east gate. It’s free to enter and free to hang out. Not ready to leave? Grab a day pass and party on with Black-berry Smoke and Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Be in the Chip amphitheater Wednesday, August 9th, for a double dip of on-track insanity appropriately capped off later that night by Pop Evil and the vanguard of metal madness, Ozzy Osbourne. Moto Stampede gets started that day with Crazy John’s Street Drag Invitational at 1:30 p.m. Hardcore drag racer Crazy John Markwald tore up the streets in Sundance, WY and Vale, SD before bringing his grassroots event to the Chip last year and he’s found a home. Rumor is a four-wheeled dragster might even vie for a pass!

Following the Street Drags, RSD Super Hooli-gan Races Presented by Indian Motorcycle start at 4 p.m. These racers are an unpredictable, impulsive bunch sporting out-of-left-field style and sponta-

neous moves. But make no mistake, they’re in it to win it so expect bar-to-bar tussles. It’s raw, raucous racing—and a ton of fun.

Watch for Roland Sands and Carey Hart to bring furious competition and madcap mayhem to the Super Hooligans. They’ll be riding Scout Sixtys, bikes that each of them customized specifically to

race this day—then give away. You won’t find give-away bikes anywhere with that kind of street (or should we say dirt) cred! See the bikes and enter free at the Chip CrossRoads or at www.motostampede.com to be among the 16 finalists notified the day before to be on-hand. There will be at least two irra-tionally happy people in the house as Pop Evil and Ozzy Osbourne take the stage.

On Friday and Saturday, August 11th and 12th, spectators are in for a treat as AMA Super-moto West takes to the dirt, pavement and obstacles of the Chip’s racecourse and roads. This intense and demanding hybrid style of rac-ing requires purpose built bikes and broad rider skills. After the dust clears and the victorious spray cheap champagne on the losers, keep your heart pounding as All That Remains and Alter Bridge rule the Wolfman Jack stage Friday night. Blue Oyster Cult and BC & the Big Rig take over after Saturday’s racing.

It’s a rock-solid motor mash-up of raucous racing and searing sounds: That’s the 2017 Moto Stam-pede at the Buffalo Chip!

If the roustabouts, sharpshooters and char-acters that populated the Black Hills in the Old West were around today, they’d be right

at home at a biker rally. Because connecting the dots from the rough and tumble cowboys, Indi-ans, outlaws and lawmen of America’s tumultu-ous Wild West to today’s two-wheeled rough rid-ers is a bumpy but direct line.

So while you’re here for the Rally, why not discover stories from America’s pioneer heritage? Whether tall tale or actual fact these records of remarkable people whose true grit won the West relate the romance, mystery and brutal survival that’s become legend—not only in these parts but around the world. Sure, The Revenant is a Holly-wood production but it’s based on an authentic event that occurred not too far from where you’re sitting right now. No kidding!

Once you drill down into the legends this region contains, the Hills will reveal rich Ameri-can stories of courage, persistence and pride. If you’re wondering where to begin, don’t worry; just look here each day, in the Sturgis Rider

Daily, for information on where to find a monu-ment or historic marker relating authentic west-ern heritage. Then go find it.

There was nothing easy about building a life in these parts back in the day. Go take a ride and discover why.

We’ll start this daily series with a two-fer, both markers located within two miles of each other on Highway 79 N, at mile markers 116 and 118, just north of Bear Butte:

SturgiS and ScooptownEast of SD Highway 79 on 201st street, this

marker depicts the location of a small cavalry encampment named after one of the officers killed at the Battle of Little Big Horn, Lt. J,G, Sturgis. The camp, called Sturgis, was in exis-tence for a short time before being moved to the garrison at Ft. Meade.

Scooptown, the original moniker given to the town of Sturgis, was one mile west at Grasshop-per Jim Frederick’s store. It was named by sol-diers who claimed they were scooped (cleaned out) obtaining provisions there.

Location: Meade County, Highway 79 N at mile marker 116

death of the BiSmarck trailFrom 1877 to 1880, a thriving stagecoach and

supply line ran between Bismarck, the western terminus of the Northern Pacific Railroad, and the Black Hills gold town of Deadwood. All that remains of the trails are a few wagon ruts and the sad story of the Wagnus family, brutally massa-cred as they headed home, having given up on their western dream. Destiny was not manifest for everyone.

Location: Meade County, Highway 79 N at mile marker 118

Tank running low? There’s a simple, convenient solution to be found at the brand new

self-serve gas station at the Buffalo Chip CrossRoads. The Buffalo Chip Stop & Fuel is open 24/7/365 so you never have to worry about getting gas for your bike or RV.

It’s located on Russ Brown Bou-levard on the east side of the Field of Flags—accessible to campers, visitors to the CrossRoads and the general public. The gas station was developed in cooperation with the Renewable Fuels Association and you’ll find cer-tified 93-octane gasoline that contains 10% ethanol (E10) at a competitive price. Did you know that E10 is approved for use by every motorcycle manufacturer? If you’re curious to know more visit ChooseEthanol.com.

“Motorcycle owners are typically looking for high octane, and ethanol helps provide that,” said Robert White, RFA vice president of industry relations, as quoted in Clutch & Chrome Magazine. “The Buffalo Chip is the only location in the area that offers 93 octane. The 93 is achieved by add-ing 10% ethanol to standard 91 octane premium, and thanks to the cost savings of ethanol, 93 octane is actually cheaper than 91 octane.”

“We are excited about this new addition and the ability to offer fuel to the public thanks to the Renewable Fuels Association,” said Buffalo Chip Owner Rod Woodruff. “It will be one more ser-vice we can provide while helping set the record straight on ethanol.”

The new gas station makes it easy for you to fill up when you return home to the Chip after the day’s ride. If you decide to wait till morning, no wor-ries, the Chip Fuel Stop is at the ready. Cars and RVs are welcome to pull in and fill up, too.

And thanks to a part-nership with McGas you can also fill grill bottles and propane tanks for your RV or camper at the Chip Stop & Fuel. Service for propane is available Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Photographer Michael Lichter’s keen eye for motorcycle custom trends and his distinct ability to identify emerging talent have combined to bring the Buffalo Chip’s well-respected Motorcycles As Art exhibition

greater renown every year. This year is especially exciting for the crew of the Chip, Michael and spectators alike, as the display digs into the minds and design sense of next-generation riders and builders.

“Motorcycles As Art: Old Iron, Young Blood” brings to the forefront 36 builders under the age of 35—including five women. There are actually 38 builders if you count the two sets of brothers—and we do. Among the ques-tions posed this year: What direction are these young thinkers and industry influencers taking bike customization? What styles do they emulate? What cues get their attention?

If the goal of the exhibition is to answer some of those questions, we might find ourselves in an existential loop. After all, who influenced the influencers? And how are they further influencing motorcycling?

People are bound to have their own opinions so you shouldn’t stress

out about it. What you should do is head to the Buffalo Chip Event Cen-ter at the campground’s east gate and have a look for yourself. As always, it’s free to enter Motor-cycles As Art and enjoy this staggering array of starkly unique and individual takes on ways to assemble an engine and two wheels. From finely honed to flat-out radical, the Next Gen’s take is straight-up unpredictable and quite compelling.

Open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, August 5th, through Friday, August 11th. Closed Sunday August 6th for a private reception. Check this paper each day starting Monday for a visit with one of the five women builders.

MotorcycleS aS artCutting-edge concepts meet historic roots

We really want you to find the compelling Motorcycles As Art Exhibition. As the preeminent custom motorcycle display in the country you owe it to yourself to spend an hour soaking up some moto-art and fabulous fabrication creativity.

So, here’s the deal: The dedicated home for Motorcycles As Art is inside the Chip Event Center on the east side of the Buffalo Chip campground. You don’t have to pay to get into the Chip to visit the exhibition. The entrance to the Event Center is on 132nd Avenue, a road you can access on the north of the campground via Alkali Road, or on the south of the campground via 207th Street.

The map here shows you how to follow Alkali road to the exhibit. If you’re a Chip camper, the Event Center is easy to find; it’s between the Hot Leathers store and zipline tower in the amphitheater. If you’re coming from I-90, navigate like a local and take the Pleasant Valley Road exit to new Ft. Meade Way. Follow that about 4 miles, turn right on 207th then left on 132nd. You’ll arrive without hassle or traffic.

Fierce rivalries, zany hooligans—and tv, too!

Be in the Chip amphitheater tomorrow when hot-shoe racers clash in bar-to-bar battle in American Flat Track’s Buffalo Chip TT. Then return on Wednesday for Crazy John’s Street Drag Invitationals and RSD Super Hooligan shenanigans. Racing is non-stop at the Chip this year! Day passes include concerts and overnight tent camping. Visit the box office or buffalochip.com.

New to the Buf-falo Chip this year is Dirt Riot

Endurance Racing: a form of four-wheel drive off-road competition. It consists of purpose built, big-tire vehicles navigat-ing crazy angles, terrible twisties and impossible-looking obstacles. Some of the action is fast and some is strategically not.

The two-day event started yesterday with tri-als; racing is today, Sat-urday, August 5th, at the Buffalo Chip Power-sports Complex. It’s the proper location, too, allowing for elevation changes, snags and straightaway sections that challenge the drivers and their spotters. It’s a good thing Dirt Riot vehicles are super versatile.

Races are scheduled in the UTV, Ultra Four Car and Trucks Super Mod Trail classes, in pro and sportsman classes. Check the schedule as events can have different parameters based on the venue. The pits are open for spectators to look at the cars and meet the drivers.

This is a separately ticketed event. Come out and enjoy a dirt crawl!

Riders have been coming home to the Buffalo Chip for decades; 36 years, to be pre-

cise. Now three generations of the Woodruff family participate in roll-ing out the welcome mat and the youngest among them decided it was time you met them all. Check this paper every day this week for a new installment in the series.

Maddy Campbell is Rod Woodruff ’s grand-daughter, and Toni Woodruff ’s daughter. She’s been working at the Buffalo Chip since a young age, and is learning the trade beginning with the basics, as her family members before her have. She introduces herself here.

In my short five years at the Chip, I’ve some-how managed to work almost every starter position at least once. From office assistant to grounds crew worker, I’ve had the opportunity to learn my family’s business from the ground up. And none of it was easy. Each job has its own hardships and perks. It’s what led me to understand the struggle and creativity it takes to run the Buffalo Chip and make it all possible.

Somewhere in the mess of all my trials and trepidations in the Chip workforce, I began working for the Sturgis Rider Daily. Part of this wonderful position involves training in journal-istic writing and interviewing while also coming up with fresh ideas for articles. This is how The Legendary Family series was born.

In the time since its conception, I’ve inter-viewed my family members who work here at the Buffalo Chip so that our readers could get to know them, and see a new side of the peo-ple who make this incredible campground tick. In the coming issues, you’ll meet my uncle, my

grandparents and my parents. I’ve been blessed with the chance to have

these hard-working and inspiring people as my family. It’s been incredibly interesting to talk with each of them and understand more about the Chip and their history with it.

Pick up each issue of the Sturgis Rider Daily to read more about the infamous family that makes the Buffalo Chip The Best Party Anywhere®. If you see these wonderful people around the camp-ground, don’t hesitate to say hi!

Heavy metal kicked off the 2017 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally on the Chip’s legendary Wolfman Jack Stage after a dramatic late arrival. The two aggressive performances began with Trapt topping out with walls of sound. Playing where powerhouses of music history have performed, Drowning Pool’s epic high energy was the perfect start of the Largest Music Festival in Motorcycling®.
