Dear readers, I want to express my thanks for your patience and understanding while I was trying to sort out printer problems. It is with regret that we will no longer be able to offer the colour print in the newsletter, due to consumable costs and with the recent problems with the printer, it is no longer a cost effective solution, so it has been decided that we will be going back to black & white print. But WE ARE now back in action and you will receive regular issues again. Thanks Bec Proserpine Vet Clinic Update The day in which the Calen Clinic is available has been changed. Calen District State College - P & C News

Push Cart Derby Day a Success The Calen District State College P&C would like to thank everyone who came along to support the Push Cart Derby Day held in April. There were 14 carts entered with over 70 race participants. We even had 2 carts enter from Gargett School. The push carts were creative and innovative with a weight bench cart, formula one cart, even one made on a kitchen sink. With the cart entry fees, raffles, face painting, coffee stall, food and drink sales we were able to raise close to $3000 which will be put towards purchasing more resources for the school. Thanks to the Mackay & District Holden club for joining us on the day; and to all the market stall holders. A big thanks to all our sponsors, whose support ensured the day was a success: Bunnings, The Good Guys, Masters, Coles, Simply Devine Make Up & Beauty, Calen Hotel, Calen Post Office, Calen Hair and Beauty, Askew cake & bake, Caban tyres, Maven Capital, Country to coast meats, Kathy and Mt Ossa Rural. And of course a big thank you to all our volunteers who made the day possible – parents, students, teachers, admin staff and all our supporters before and during the day. We all learnt a lot from our first Push Cart Derby, now we will make some changes to ensure the next one is an even greater success.

PUB NEWS with Clarrie & Marie Giess

What a Wintermoon festival this year!!!! I hope many of the local businesses benefited from having so many people in the area. Congratulations to the Wintermoon crew for reaching their 20th year – it's a huge achievement and a very popular one judging by the number of people up in The Pocket. There's yet another advantage for me as it draws family from both north and south and of course, they stay with us in The Pocket which I love. In fact my cousin and her partner from South have been volunteering at Wintermoon for the past two years. Well done to all concerned. Our next big news is that ALFIE LANGER IS COMING TO CALEN AGAIN. We will be holding a Sportsmen's Dinner with Alfie at the hotel at 6pm on Saturday May 21st. Tickets for your two course meal with Alfie, the auction, the raffles and plenty of fun are $50 and can be purchased at the hotel. Get in now while you can or phone 49588266. Mick from The Reef Hotel in Airlie has just purchased 10 tickets so don't miss out on your chance for a great, fun night. Well done to all those who organised the first billy cart derby at the school this year. It is a pleasure to sponsor this event and also to judge the best themed team which is not an easy feat. Great to have Za back on deck after her month away visiting family in NZ. Tash and Nat along with their team have done a great job in holding the fort while she was away. Once again it was a pleasure to host our veterans with a breakfast on Anzac Day. Two-up is proving to be a lot of fun on the only legal day of the year and we acknowledge Knotty for the great job he did in organising and running it. Lest we forget. We are really looking forward to the Strawberry Farm opening again this year. It's a great venue and really brings the tourists and business to the area. Like most little country pubs, times are really hard so these events are very welcome. Our Social Club is doing a great job in keeping the Jag the Joker jackpot growing at a good pace. No luck for anyone so far so at time of writing, we are verging on the big $5000.00 mark. Get in on Friday nights for your chance to win the loot. The hotel now has 820 “likes” on its' facebook page so if you haven't “liked” it, please do so. It's a great way to get our activities out there and for the community to know what's happening at their local. Our sincere and deepest sympathy goes out to Marg and Bill McLean on their recent loss. We look forward to seeing you all at the hotel soon....Cheers, Marie & Clarrie.

COSTO’S CORNER

WHO can remember when the former Bligh Labor Government shut down the now-defunct Mt Charlton State School? It is still a sore point among people in that close-knit community and with the State Budget to be delivered next month, I will be writing to the Minister for Education to seek assurances that no further school closures are planned by the current Labor Government in Whitsunday, especially after they let the Seaforth kindergarten disappear with almost no consultation. It was the same story when Mt Charlton closed but if it was the LNP shutting schools and kindergartens, you wouldn't hear the end of it! In fact, the Queensland Teachers Union would have probably camped outside my office after some practice up at Wintermoon but sadly, when it comes to our smaller rural communities, they don't want to know anything about it. Come to think of it, we never heard boo out of the QTU in suburbia either.... just ask the locals in Mackay's Northern Beaches who were led up the garden path on a new high school which was promised by Labor way back in 2001. That school only became a reality after the LNP came to office and what did we do for education? Answer: a 16% increase in funding (not cuts) which resulted in new schools in growth areas like the Northern Beaches but at the same time, making sure we had a new kindy and extra resources in rural communities like Calen. So, in summary, I'll be putting it on the Minister to come clean on any school closures but considering I am still awaiting a reply on the issue of last year's kindergarten closure at Seaforth, I won't be holding my breath. *** AT the time of writing, I had my fingers crossed for funding out of the pre-election Federal Budget to help deliver the long-awaited Urannah Dam on the other side of the Clarke Range. I've been a strong advocate of this project for quite some time and if we are fair dinkum about developing Northern Australia, then we need dams like Urannah, especially in the current economic climate. I was only up there just over six months ago and let me say it is a perfect site for a dam and would help boost our agricultural, resources and construction industries. Furthermore, it would open up opportunities in eco-tourism and if we want to diversify our economy, that is not to be laughed at. *** FINALLY, I was very saddened to learn of the recent passing of respected Calen identity Don Mackenzie, aged 89. It was only a few weeks ago that I called in to visit this local legend (and mum's first cousin) who died six months to the day after mum died. We chatted about his trip to Scotland in 1976 and his glory days in rugby league... not that Donny called it as such but he was certainly one of the finest to lace up a boot in this part of the world. I can still see Donny at the Showgrounds of a Sunday afternoon alongside his great mate Glen Walters, watching the local footy. Donny's much loved 'Aunty Annie' (my late grandmother) was also there, sitting with me as a little boy up in the old grandstand. They were great days and Donny loved it as much as we did. To Pearl and the rest of the family, we offer our deepest condolences. Vale, Don Mackenzie:( Jason Costigan MP Member for Whitsunday Shadow Assistant Minister to the Opposition Leader for North Queensland "Your strong LOCAL voice for Mackay & the Whitsundays"

CALEN CANEFIELDS TOASTMASTER NEWS

The hippies were out in Calen for the Monthly Calen Canefields Toastmasters Meeting. It was a great trip down memory lane even though we all admitted that we weren’t a part of that culture. The lyrics of the song ‘San Francisco,’ If you’re going to San Francisco be sure to wear some flowers in your hair, was mentioned by more than one person, the flower power fashions from London’s Carnaby Street, the movie ‘Easy Rider’, the VW Hippie Wagons with their psychedelic paint work, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan were some of the topics mentioned on the night. Yes, we do have FUN at Toastmasters. Our next meeting is going to be a dinner meeting at Calen District State College on Wednes-day 18th May from 7pm. Pioneer Toastmaster Club will be visiting and it will be a Who Dunnit “Murder Mystery Theme” We would be glad to have visitors at the meeting if anyone would like to come along and join in the FUN. St Helens Beach Progress and Environment Assoc. meeting and was held on Sunday the 10th April. It was pleasing to see some new members present. The 2016 committee will consist of Bob Sutherland President John Pullen Secretary Ph 49588595 Rita Johnston Treasurer 49588170 Publicity officer Donna Seymour email- [email protected] Meetings are usually held every school holidays and are usually brief(1 hour) at the St Helens Beach Playground at 9am. Dates will be advertised on the noticeboard near bus stop at entrance of St Helens Beach. If you are interested in attending or would like more information please call any of the committee Members . Membership fee was kept at $5 for the year (this is per household) . You do not have to attend meetings to be a member, money usually goes to the Christmas Santa Run. For all the children to enjoy a bag of lollies on Christmas day. And any other unexpected expenses through the year. Also with the upcoming Wintermoon festival at Camerons Pocket on 29th APRIL till 2nd May. It was suggested a good time for any beach residents to sell unwanted articles from a home garage sale. There is usually a lot of tourists that visit the beach that weekend, so if you want just put a sign out the front of your house and sell any of your unwanted goods that would be the perfect time. (remember your trash could be someones treasure) You have nothing to loose. The committee would like to thank our outgoing President Ron Birkett for the many years of unpaid voluntary service he gave to our organisation. Ron will still be attending meetings but is standing downs as president . Many thanks Ron.
