The Shadow Children series
would no longer be a series. There would be no subsequent “Among...” novels.
" When Jen tells Luke about the rally instead of backing out of it like he does in the actual text, he finds he courage to go despite his fears. When they arrive at the scene of the rally they see that only 40 shadow children showed up. Luke turns pale and is overcome with fear because of the lack of a 1000 kids with was told would be there. Disappointed with the turn out of the rally, Jen insists on continuing on, and does so with confidence. As they step foot in front of the presidentʼs house protesting for their freedom, they are all shot and killed immediately.
" As a result of going to the rally, both Luke and Jen are killed. Since Jenʼs dad works for the government he was given her body to bury. However, since Lukeʼs family was of no special status, they had no idea where Luke was. With no one to ask or inform of Lukeʼs disappearance, the Garner family had to continue going about their regular lives and wonder forevermore what happened to Luke, never knowing he was killed. After weeks of waiting and hoping that Luke would return they began to lose hope and the pain of losing a son was so overwhelming for Mr. Garner he dies of a heart attack. Now without Luke and her husband, widow, Ms. Garner has to provide for and take care of her last two sons on her own. All along living right next door to the answer.
" What was a progressive novel turns into a tragedy. Changing this one part of the story drastically changes the outcome of the book, and in this case the “books.” With Luke dead the Shadow Children series, would no longer be a series because it would end with the first book. It would be the equivalent of Harry Potter dying in the first book when there are 6 books following it. If Margaret Peterson Haddix decided to have Luke go to the rally, it may not have went exactly how I said above, but the point is that the story would have changed in one way or another.
