First presented on the Milan motor show in 1989 and end of that same year produc9on started up. This series was manufactured for only one year. Es9mated 679 units were built in that 9me. It will always be the original “mother-‐ship”.
Moto Guzzi 1000S -‐ Series 1 -‐ THE ORIGINAL ONE
1000S: THE MAIN SERIES
Moto Guzzi 1000S – Series 2 -‐ THE BEAUTIFUL ONE
Moto Guzzi 1000S -‐ Series 2.1 – THE TAMED ONE
Not a revolu9on but a nice evolu9on from the original series 1 The saddle was restyled to make the bike look more lean. The wire wheels emphasized the retro look. The newly designed stainless steel cockpit looks a bit odd at first but also more high quality compared to the plas9c one. (which has more 750S DNA though). Li[le over 500 were build from 1991 un9l 1993.
At the end of its life cycle they cut off the bull’s balls. No evolu9on or revolu9on but more devalua9on maybe. Gone was the power and the sound – smaller carbure[or, smaller valves, no more erect exhaust…All non-‐Le Mans parts. It was supposed to have more torque in the lower revs….yeh sure…. Reason was more strict emission laws in some countries, mostly Germany. It was sold alongside Series 2 which con9nued to be sold in other countries. Although technically far away from the original “Le Mans marries 750S” idea, she s9ll has a lot of 1000S DNA and is of course part of the family. Total of 59 were build officially from 1992 un9l 1993 although some have a 1991 label.

Moto Guzzi 1000SE – A special edi9on for the U.K. market – Total es9mated at 30-‐40 units A series specially made for the U.K. market. Where the 1000S was a retro version of the 750S, the 1000SE aimed at being the retro version of the Le Mans series 1. In my opinion the idea behind this move was that a retro version of the much more popular Le Mans 1 would have a far be[er sales poten9al than a 750S retro version. The dis9nc9ve Le Mans 1 red colour and small fairing combined with Le Mans 5 technique should do the trick. I don’t believe it really made it into a good Le Mans retro. No LM1 to be seen here. More a good-‐looking red-‐headed sister of the Italian 1000S. Take a second look and appreciate the beauty and specialty of it.

Best guess work. Series 1 and 2 total 1191 units (confirmed by total frame-‐numbers). In Ian Falloon’s book there is a total produc9on men9oned of 1360 units. 1360 units minus 1191 leaves 169 units for Series 2.1 and U.S. Series 2.1 was confirmed by total frame-‐numbers as 59 units so the U.S. would be a total of 110 units. The Bri9sh SE version was accounted in the same VV frame-‐number as series 1 and 2. In a Bri9sh magazine the importer announced that 30-‐40 would be imported for one year only as a special edi9on.
The split between the number of series 1 and 2. Best guess work. Only series 1 was produced in 1989 and 1990 and so if the units of these 2 year from Ian Falloon’s book are added it totals to 679 units. Meaning Series 2 (and the on this same design and unique parts based U.S. and 2.1 series) would total 681 units. This means an equal split between these 2 designs and thus parts unique to these series. What could be a good indica9on as the unique parts probably have olen a minimum order quan9ty from their suppliers (e.g. saddle supplier, wire wheels supplier etc.). If you look at the various VV numbers in combina9on with the series characteris9c designs in the owner registers, so far there is no evidence against this split. To be con9nued………

What?, when?, which?. With Moto Guzzi it is olen unclear how much of a specific model were produced and when. This is also the case with the 1000S and its various series. I tried to combine various sources and come to my own best guess work. Just for some peace of mind…
