It clearly was released before the sound of the horn at the end of regulaon—and it was apparent that the referee would have called the foul—it’s all history now of course, but it will be talked about for days to come. Oriole Freshman Rylee Menster put back a lay up underneath the basket to win the game against Midland last Friday in Machovec, right as me expired. It was the most important points of her young career thus far. Trailing the Eagles, 52-51 with 7.8 seconds to go, the O’s had the ball and called a me out to draſt their game winning play. Sanderson captures those final seconds, “Aſter taking a meout, we inbounded the ball to Menster. She found Nachazel for a 6-footer in the lane that came up short. Megan Wagaman grabbed the offensive rebound, but missed the put back. Menster grabbed her miss and scored as the buzzer sounded to give us a 53-52 victory”. His recollecon doesn’t do it jusce so let me jazz it up—the O’s had 2 good looks at the rim, both with a hand in their face and both just falling off the mark. Both shots were pounced on and rebounded by the O’s and Menster, with 10 hands of all 5 Eagle defenders in her face, calmly tossed up a shot from just under the right side of the rim as if she were all alone and hit the square to win it for the O’s who swarmed the court in celebraon. .. Something like that—it was the most excitement Machovec has seen this season and while it sure was a great experience I’d like to remind the girls that we much prefer the 25 point wins. I’d like to leave the perspiraon to the players if you don’t mind. The O’s led early by as many as 13 but as Coach Sanderson summarizes, “In the second half we struggled to score, parcularly in the 3rd quarter. Aſter pushing the tempo in the first half, and extending our defense for much of the game, I think we got fagued in the 2nd half. Even so, we led by 10 points with 4:00 to go in the game. Unfortunately, Midland caught fire and scored on 5 of their next 6 possessions. At the other end we missed two shots at the rim, missed the front end of two one-and-one's and turned the ball over once. Before we knew it we were down 52-51” and as Coach said, “The win felt like a narrow escape”. Narrow indeed, but sll a win! Leading scorers for Springville were Menster with 14 as well as 6 steals and Sarah Matus added 13 points with 4 assists. Tuesday, the girls took a short road trip to Central City to take on the 1-15 Wildcats. The O’s handled them well in their first meeng, winning it by 54. The girls came out in Coach Sanderson’s words, “very flat” and while they were able to maintain a lead (30 - 21 at the half) Central City gave them a good fight. It was no surprise in the second half however when the girls managed to turn up the heat and Matus took the game into her own hands, hing 4 of 5 three pointers. Megan Wagaman (5 assists) and Menster (7 assists) started feeding Mikayla Nachazel down low and she scored 14 in the second half. That was the difference as the Oriole’s pulled away and won it, 69-30. Nachazel finished with 17, Wagaman had 12 and Menster had 8, but even more impressive were her 8 steals. Next up? The Alburne Pirates. The home game will p off at 6:15 and in a goodwill gesture I suggest you take your heart medicaons, just in case—this will be another great match up in Machovec. Pictured above is Menster and her team mates aſter the buzzer beater— Menster appears to be waing for the ref to wave the shot off. To the leſt is Matus hing a three in the first half at Central City.

ORIOLE PRIDE

MENSTER’S PUT BACK WINS IT AT THE BUZZER

Did it fall before time expired? It clearly was released before the sound of the horn at the end of regulation—and it was apparent that the referee would have called the foul—it’s all history now of course, but it will be talked about for days to come. Oriole Freshman Rylee Menster put back a lay up underneath the basket to win the game against Midland last Friday in Machovec, right as time expired. It was the most important points of her young career thus far. Trailing the Eagles, 52-51 with 7.8 seconds to go, the O’s had the ball and called a time out to draft their game winning play. Sanderson captures those final seconds, “After taking a timeout, we inbounded the ball to Menster. She found Nachazel for a 6-footer in the lane that came up short. Megan Wagaman grabbed the offensive rebound, but missed the put back. Menster grabbed her miss and scored as the buzzer sounded to give us a 53-52 victory”. His recollection doesn’t do it justice so let me jazz it up—the O’s had 2 good looks at the rim, both with a hand in their face and both just falling off the mark. Both shots were pounced on and rebounded by the O’s and Menster, with 10 hands of all 5 Eagle defenders in her face, calmly tossed up a shot from just under the right side of the rim as if she were all alone and hit the square to win it for the O’s who swarmed the court in celebration. .. Something like that—it was the most excitement Machovec has seen this season and while it sure was a great experience I’d like to remind the girls that we much prefer the 25 point wins. I’d like to leave the perspiration to the players if you don’t

mind. The O’s led early by as many as 13 but as Coach Sanderson summarizes, “In the second half we struggled to score, particularly in the 3rd quarter. After pushing the tempo in the first half, and extending our defense for much of the game, I think we got fatigued in the 2nd half. Even so, we led by 10 points with 4:00 to go in the game. Unfortunately, Midland caught fire and scored on 5 of their next 6 possessions. Before we knew it we were down 52-51” and as Coach said, “The win felt like a narrow escape”. Narrow indeed, but still a win! Leading scorers for Springville were Menster with 14 as well as 6 steals and Sarah Matus added 13 points with 4 assists. Tuesday, the girls took a short road trip to Central City to take on the 1-15 Wildcats. The O’s handled them well in their first meeting, winning it by 54. Next up? The Alburnett Pirates. The home game will tip off at 6:15 and in a goodwill gesture I suggest you take your heart medications, just in case—this will be another great match up in Machovec.

BOYS EVEN UP THEIR RECORD WITH ROAD WIN

Friday’s 58-45 loss at home against a 3-9 Midland team sure did sting. Midland, to their credit, came out aggressive and held a 30-18 half time lead. Their press caused too many Oriole turnovers and while Springville played even with the Eagles in the second half, the damage was already done. Springville fell to 7-8 with the loss, 5-4 in Tri-Rivers play. The upside of that loss? Well it wasn’t the first game Nick Merritt ever coached, so it’s no surprise to see he brought out the assertive side of the O’s on Tuesday at Central City. The boys took the upper hand right away and didn’t relinquish—even when it turned into a foul contest. Springville held on to beat the Wildcats, 59-47 and move to 8-8 on the year and 6-4 in conference play. On Friday, Alburnett will visit Machovec and the O’s should be ready to avenge a 20 point loss that they suffered back in December. Springville was never in that game and I predict that this Friday Coach Merritt will have his team motivated to peform. Scoring isn’t the problem (the O’s average 50 a game), they need to get the stops on defense. Senior Ryan Menster has really elevated his play this past week, the lanky post had his first double-double at Central City when he had 12 points and 14 boards. Stats aren’t in just yet but I believe he had a couple blocks as well. Cody Blake has become Mr. Popular with the guys in stripes and despite the added attention, he’s been playing solid down low. Trevor Hulett has been pegged to guard the opponents leading scorer in the last two games and he’s done his job admirably. Greg Pauly continues to lead his team in scoring while Tyler McDowell creates havoc on defense. Cavanaugh Riley runs the offense at point and Andrew Blakely is the 6th man that does just a little bit of everything. These guys are a lot of fun to watch so join us on Friday—there’s no better team we enjoy stopping than the Alburnett Pirates. Purple just doesn’t look good on our premises—break out your black and orange and pack the gym. See you there!

Pictured in the top right corner is Menster at Central City getting a hand on a Wildcat jumper. Directly above is McDowell and Merritt talking strategy at Central City. To the left is Greg Pauly who we know can score, but he can play defense too and here he is blocking a shot against Midland last Friday.

YOUTH BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT HELD IN MACHOVEC

I have to admit, if I drive by the school and see a lot of cars I feel like I’ve missed something. That was the case last Saturday when there was a girls basketball tournament happening in both of the gyms at Springville. Girls Coach Nate Sanderson and his team put on the 24 team tournament that started at 8am and wrapped up at 9pm. There were four age divisions, 4th, 5th, 7th and 8th. Springville had teams compete in all but the 7th grade level. Funds raised will go toward the team camps this summer, a big kudos to the girls and their families. It was a well run event and from the looks of it, the future of the basketball program is looking pretty bright!

CRAZY MASCOT OF THE WEEK

There’s some pretty crazy mascots out there. This week we look at Lake View, South Carolina—home of the Wild Gators! Lake View is located in the Northeast corner of the state and has just 800 people in the community and the school has just over 400 students in grades 9 thru 12. Their athletic teams wear the colors of blue and gold and they hold an impressive number of state titles for such a small program. Their football team has won 9 state championships, their baseball team has won 8 while basketball has won 4 and their softball program 3. Their location as a gateway to Myrtle Beach is how they got their nick name, I just would wonder if there’s such a thing as a tame gator—aren’t they all wild?

LADY O’S CLICK THEIR HEELS AND FIND THEIR WAY HOME Regional pairings came out Monday afternoon and your #12 Orioles earned the respect of the powers that be. They’ll stay home for the second and third round after resting with the first round bye they were awarded . The girls will host the Calamus-Wheatland/Central City winner on Tuesday, February 17 and they’ll advance to host another round on Friday, February 20. Both games will be a 7pm tip-off so make plans to join the Oriole Nation as they cheer on the O’s in their quest for post season play.
