SOUTH Africa’s fi rst digital print on laminated tubes, elaborate and striking decoration techniques for glass bottles, the ultimate convenience for on-the-go coffee cups, innovative carton designs to protect cakes on the move, packaging that’s helping to shift lower-income consumers from powdered to liquid detergents, gold-spangled gift tubes for sparkling wines, portable packs that keep beer colder for longer – all these concepts took gold medals in this year’s Gold Pack Awards.
As always, adjudication was a highly-instructional – not to mention enjoyable – three-day exercise, with the judges bringing a remarkable range of talents, erudi-tion, technical knowledge and expertise to the table. At the end of the long debate (and some argument!) they agreed that 59 entries should be awarded ‘fi nalist’ status. Those subsequently elected as medal winners and the recipient of the ultimate Gold Pack Trophy are revealed this evening at the Inanda Club and the results chronicled in this brochure.
In addition, thanks are recorded to the judges for their good-natured and professional approach to a laborious task.
The Gold Pack Awards committee also gratefully acknowledge the fi nancial support given by the sponsors, without whom this ambitious programme couldn’t function. Sponsors’ names and logos are displayed on the next page.

programme. South African packs have garnered numerous WorldStars ever since IPSA became a member of the WPO in 1993 – confi rming our country’s world-class status.
And that’s what the Gold Pack Awards are all about – promoting and encouraging world-class excellence in packaging design and technology. They’re also about fostering co-operation across the packaging supply chain and it’s gratifying that an increasing number of entries come directly from brand owners, as well as from packaging converters.
It’s gratifying, too, that sustainability and environmental awareness are increasingly obvious in both entries and accolades.
We hope tonight’s celebrations will help to inspire the packaging chain to ever-greater heights.
Congratulations to all the winners! Undoubtedly, the Gold Pack Awards – established in 1974 – are entrenched as the premier event for South Africa’s packaging fraternity.

This is a focused closed loop campaign for the reuse of PET bottles. Sold to schools, selected institutions and companies, the bottles are collected post consumer use and reused as bricks to build classrooms for schools in disadvantaged areas. Although not strictly a recycling campaign the programme raises awareness that plastic bottles are not rubbish and should be recycled or reused.
