2009 High School Scholars:Our experience using RCP with students
Deborah Estrin, Cameron Ketcham, and Rakhee Patel, UCLA Center for Embedded Networked Sensing (CENS)
2
Our Introduction to RCP for Students
• Python/AppEngine/Android tutorials• Sensing the old fashioned way: with a pen and paper• Looking at the space with sensors in mind• Brainstorming ideas for our own Campaign.
3
Transportation at UCLA
• Track how people are moving around the UCLA campus• Students went out and gathered data from their own
campaign.
4
Resources we have provided
Ubuntu Server:• php • mysql • ftp access • svn • trac • Moin wiki • Wordpress blog
Google resources:• Android• AppEngine
5
Projects and Guidance
• Breaking the Norm• WaterBusters• Ketcham• PEIR PM2.5 Validation• Social Wireless Localization• UC Explorers
6
•Breaking the Norm
• see how people on the UCLA campus react to certain unusual and unexpected events and/or behaviors.
• Initially they wanted to create more of a social experiment
• We helped them move to more of a data visualization experiment
• Using audio and location data along with tags to visualize the situation
7
•WaterBusters
• WaterBusters is a campaign to monitor where water is being misused throughout the LA County area
• Directly using the RCP to develop• Have been updating the blog regularly:

8
•Ketcham
• Using the simon says game to determine user's memory recall in different situations
• Originally had more of a social experiment– Collecting data on age, gender, ethnicity
• Guided them to create a project which gathered data about the space people we in rather than the people themselves
• Now collecting data on location and ambient noise level
9
•PEIR PM2.5 Validation
• validate PM2.5 values computed by the EMFAC model by comparing them to actual values measured and recorded by the UCB Particle Monitor
10
•Social Wireless Localization
• using the wireless technology in tandem with GPS sensors to calculate the localization data for a networked group of devices
11
•UC Explorers
• Gathering data on places around campus• Directly using the RCP to develop
12
Group Dynamics
• Groups are very different• (talk about groups? And what they are like?)
