The collective spaces Muslims have built in Detroit are products of careful thought and negotiation. There are over 50 mosques in greater Detroit, and their growth is transforming neighborhoods, business districts, and relations among Muslims and between Muslims and the larger society.

This project examines how Muslim communities and their institutions have evolved in Detroit over the last century, focusing on processes of building, inhabiting, and display.

We will explore these issues through community-based, collaborative research, which will include:

• Ethnographic and historical research• Documentation: website • Exhibition;: media union gallery, April 6 • Links with other projects now being

planned
